The Candlemass you hear on Chapter VI is somewhat different from the Candlemass you'd come to know on their previous four full-lengths. For starters, the tempo has been increased, making this record less of a doom metal record and more of a traditional heavy metal record with sprinkles of doom and even power metal. Messiah Marcolin is gone as well, though his replacement Thomas Vikstrom manages to retain some, but not all of Marcolin's charm. From a songwriting standpoint, not a whole lot is different. Sure, the tempo has been raised, but this is compositionally still a Candlemass record. It's mostly some solid if inconsequential stuff, but two songs, namely "Julie Laughs No More" and "Black Eyes" stand out as been the catchiest and most well written. It's not the greatest material from the band, obviously, but if you liked them before I fail to see why this would turn you away.
