We all know and love Black Sabbath. They are one of those classic rock bands that set the pace for other metal bands for years to come. Even some of the bands of current day 2005 are based upon ideas that Black Sabbath started. They were also the first band ever to be deemed satanic or gothic. Never was a band given such a bad reputation because of subject matter.

At the time Black Sabbath was...
Tony Iommi - Lead Guitar
Geezer Butler - Bass
Ozzy Osbourne - Vocals
Bill Ward - Drums

The Best Point In The Album
Now, on to the cd. Keep in mind that this is a greatest hits album and it truly gives the best of Sabbath. The first track is titled Black Sabbath and it's filled with creepy noises and a man screaming in the rain. This is a really cool intro and this track leads into The Wizard which is one of my all time favorite Sabbath songs. It has a really cool bass line that supports the cool riff. After The Wizard, the cd turns in to the Black Sabbath song that everyone knows and loves. Paranoid! The masterpiece that won't die. Through radio it will live on forever, well, in Florida they play it all the time. This is probably the band's most famous song. Now, next song is War Pigs. This song is a 7 minute romp of hard rock and amazing lyrics. It's funny because my friend is always singing this when he's at my house.
The only one to challenge that hierchy of Paranoid, is the next song on the album. Iron Man comes up next. This is probably the next most famous song by the band. The classic riff on guitar is here and will never be forgotten. Also the lyrics will remain as a highlight of the band's. These tracks are huge high points if the album. The next three aren't my favorite.

The Ehh... Point Of The Album
This is where Tomorrow's Dream, Fairies Wear Boots, and Changes come in.. I really never liked this portion of the album. Fairies Wear Boots is good but I'm not really a fan of the others. Tomorrow's Dream is lazy and sounds like filler (yes, filler on a greatest hits album). Also Changes sounds like the band decided to get experimental with this song as it is slooow and is irrelevant to the subject matter of any other Sabbath song. All of these songs are good but not for a greatest hits album. When I say they are "Ehh" I mean that there is much better to hear on this album.

The Diverse, Great Portion Of The Album
This is where the album picks up again. I love the next couple song that come up here on this collection. Sweet Leaf, Children Of The Grave, and Sabbath Bloody Sabbath are the next fab-three in my opinion. Hey, it's my three favorite Sabbath songs in a row. These tracks in my opinion are the best on the album, mainly because the other tracks are ridiculously overplayed. These songs really display the best talent of the band in my opinion. Anyway, the next three, and the last three tracks are, Am I Going Insane, Snowblind, and N.I.B.. NIB is also a favorite of mine. I was never a big fan of Snowblind and Am I Going Insane is really just the generic song formula that every band uses. Overall this is a pretty good section of the album.

Conclusion
In conclusion, this is a great addition to any Sabbath fan's collection. It has all of the standout tracks that I grew up with. Though I wish they could have somehow fit Hand Of Doom or Electric Funeral on there. If they did that, this album would be my #1 favorite of all time. Overall score would have to be a 10/10.

Pros
Great Track list
Best of the band
Good thing they released this before their two worst cd's.

Cons
"Changes"?!?!?!
No Hand Of Doom!

Standout Tracks
----------------------
Paranoid
Iron Man
Sweet Leaf
Sabbath Bloody Sabbath

Good review. I cant believe the album doesnt have Electric Funeral? Surely that is a prime Sabbath song? Its just so creepy and scary, which is what Sabbath were originally. Still good review.

"Changes" is a good song. It definately needs "Into the Void".

Pretty good review.

good review, im not that attracted to black sabbath, unless we're talking about one of Mr. Ward's Fill-Sprees.

the cassette version i think had Electric Funeral, plus like Warning.
Also, Technical Ecstacy and Never Say Die were great albums, i dunno what your smoking. Tomorrows Dream is another great song. You just gotta be more open to what Sabbath had to offer. Like what do you think about Ronnie James Dio and Ian Gillan in Black Sabbath!? *gasps*

Those albums were horrible, and lacked any good songwriting whatsoever. Even the best songs on those were rather bad.

I prefer the album Sabbath Bloody Sabbath to this greatest hits. Although it did introduce me to the amazing song called N.I.B.

Agreed.
IMO lommi would be considered a much better guitarist if he was in a different band but in Sabbath he's to overshadowed by Ozzy
Most of what is considered some of the greatest riffs of our time are overshadowed by Ozzy's nasal atonal voice?

It's a polite way of expressing my excessive abhorrence for Tony Iommi.
