Had to interrupt this multiple times so I didn't quite measure the full impact of its longer runtime at 56 minutes, but this felt far stronger and consistent than his earlier tapes save Savage Mode. Feels underrated. First of all he pretty much entirely drops the gimmicky pew pew skrrt skrrt, which is a saving grace. The album's aesthetic surprisingly match the artwork quite well; far from the gangsta aesthetics one could expect, a lot of the tracks like 3,5,9,11 have bubbly, light and colourful cartoon instrumentals and are all super nice - although on 9 his vocals fail to feel congruous. 1's also a nice 21s track, and 2 is quite cool although his repetitive, slightly nasal delivery isn't so great. 4 is a rupture in atmosphere, going back to darker things between 3 and 5, but it is short and passable enough. 6 is cool but a touch too long. 7 is nice and relaxed, but after that the second half of the album felt far weaker - although again it might be my listening conditions. 8,10,12 and 13 are all far weaker - 13 being the worst by far. Thankfully, the closer saves the beans being a cool darker, autotuned track more in the vein of his tapes (but better made), and brings this up to a 3.3

Issa going in my trash can. Super boring project that I cannot see the appeal of in any way, shape or form.

21 Savage really made a statement last year with Savage Mode, a dark, Halloween-esque collaborative effort with the ineffable Metro Boomin' that showcased the type of haunting atmosphere and unsettling moments that many a trap rapper have tried to embody at one point or another. Issa harkens back to his earliest projects such as The Slaughter Tape when it comes to style, and though it's a bit more shiny and a little less imposing and gritty, 21 Savage does this kind of stuff as well as anyone right now. It's not really anything he hasn't covered before, but he's just so good at it it really doesn't matter much. That said, whenever he tries his hand at a more R&B-flavored track is where things get dodgy. It's nice he's trying to spice things up with something like that, but it's really not his lane. In all, Issa is a solid debut full-length, but one can't help but wonder what else he's got up his sleeve.

21 savage could've continued to create those cold-blood songs about his struggles in the streets but here, he's bringing a poppier side of him that really doesn't make him stand out. on the contrary, it makes him rather forgettable, and the same can be said about the whole project. 2

Loses steam about halfway through and doesn't do much to recover. It would be unreasonable to ask that Savage only make the same tough-as-fuck trap songs over and over, but his attempts to create some R&B on this album really fall flat. "Close My Eyes" is an early favorite.
