In Flames ... Death Metal or Metalcore?

Just a quick question/opinion with a little back story...

I originally started hearing In Flames awhile back thanks in part to Guitar Hero III bonus tracks. I didn't like the album Lunar Strain--AT FIRST--but it grew on me and is easily one of my favorite death metal-sounding albums and one that I generally use to compare others in the genre to.

Well, after many years, I decided to purchase a newer In Flames album, seeing as these guys are still together with the exception of losing a guitarist last year.

The album A Sense of Purpose was an utter disappointment. If I had hoped to hear a metalcore album, then it would have been a great album. It's not a bad album, it just doesn't sound like an In Flames album.

It sounds more vaguely like Unearth or Lamb of God than their first album.

What happened between 1994 and 2008? At what point did their sound change from dark false-vocals to more of the enthusiastic singing-screaming style? The Celtic acoustic sounds from Lunar Strain were completely absent from this album. I should have known from the cover art that something was amiss, but Wikipedia still describes In Flames as a melodic death metal band.

Comments? Anyone agree or disagree? If looking for that Gothenburg death metal sound from Lunar Strain, what other In Flames (or other band) albums to check out? Which to avoid?

??? What's this then?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U736IGe7mHs#t=21s

And the singable refrains... what's that...

I'm not great at identifying genres and don't really think I can arguably say what genre the 2008 album fits into...

...it's just not death metal...

Their original stuff was Melodic Death Metal, but their last few albums have had quite a lot of metalcore influence.

It varies by album.

Clayman,Whoracle,The Jester Race, and Come Clarity are the best imo.

Also check out Dark Tranquility.

I guess there are no private messages here........

Thanks Endangered Oddity for actually providing an answer.

I also found out a little more here:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/In_Flames#Reroute_to_Remain_.282002.E2.80.932003.2 9

I guess it was their 5th album, Reroute to Remain (2002–2003), when their originally started to... become influenced.

"Reroute to Remain represented a major stylistic shift for In Flames music, in the addition of clean vocals and catchier choruses."

Edit: Listening to Clayman right now...... MUCH CLOSER to what I expected their evolution to sound like! Good stuff... kinda sounds like a mix between Reroute to Remain and Lunar Strain

It was a steady progression from Clayman to Reroute...they had the anthemic thing even a bit in Whoracle. It wasn't really a metalcore thing, though...maybe whatshisname was a little too big of a korn fan or something. I stopped listening after Clayman, but I don't fault them for doing something different; you can't exactly do the same thing for 15 years and expect it to sound fresh.

Yeah...... well regardless, I ended up listening to A Sense of Purpose about four times since starting this thread last night and it is actually a pretty good album.

I know it's probably not one that you frequent posting metalheads would listen to or enjoy, but the album had a pretty good message...

A couple good lines "I feel like shit, But at least I feel something" from Disconnected and "You're waiting for a re-run, But yesterday won't come. Want to relive the moment, But yesterday is done" from bonus track Tilt...

A couple of lines that have a pretty good meaning, and end up being catchy enough to stick in my head. If it had been the original death-metal growls, I probably wouldn't have looked deep enough into the words unless the sound was good enough.

It's an album you can share with borderline alt rockers/nu-metalheads/metalcore fans and hopefully both enjoy.

Glad they evolved, but it would be nice if they tried to revisit their old sound at least for a couple tracks on their upcoming 2011 album.
