I'm kinda surprised it's not been in the news more. I'm from the Dakotas and even here it's not talked about much. It's really bothering everyone here because it's almost like it was being censored.

I mean now there's some news on it, but it has been going on for months and not one word about it on the news for most that time.

Absolutely shocking how violent the force has been against the peaceful protesters

I remember one of my native friends made a presentation for a speech class about why he was against the pipeline back in 2014. Shit was a long time in the making and it got ugly fast.

Money.

They promise to bring a lot of $$$ into the state. Which I honestly don't understand because we have one of the strongest economies in the US, its not like we really need it here.

There's something called property rights that you might want to read up on. It's kind of a big deal. Slightly more important even than a bunch of hipsters blindly listening to illiterate natives and protesting so they can post it on Facebook to seem like hippies to overcompensate for their nihilism.

if you care about property rights then why don't you care about the natives treaty with the government or the fact that eminent domain was used?

Eminent domain is legal, a mob of hipsters threatening violence to get back legally-obtained land isn't.

Saying you had a treaty once, therefore the land is yours is as dumb as saying you had a deed to a car that was repossessed and the car is still yours.

eminent domain is legal yes but should it be? it is literally the government pointing guns at you taking your stuff which seems like something you would oppose

how dare England build a subway system!? That land once belonged to the Anglo-Saxons!

I seriously can't believe half of our country is this ridiculous. I'm honestly surprised even Sputnik fell for this dumb Bullshit.

There's no other way to create necessary infastracture. If you don't have eminent domain citizens have nearly unlimited bargaining power and they can bankrupt the country every time it needs to build an airport.

And it's not simply "taking your stuff" they get recompensated for it.

It wasn't even their land. It's not common sense to break the law because people whine about some dumbass graveyard. Grow up and stop belieiving in ghosts, the modern world doesn't have time for humoring asinine superstitions cuz it hurts your feelings.

I thought the main concern was with the route being located close to their land, and the potential for any contamination. Not to mention that most developed countries are trying to move away from non-renewable energies (hence why many environmentalists were also involved in the protest).

In the end it sounds like their concerns may have be warranted ... were other routes not given enough thought, were there potential issues with contamination and not enough safe guards, is it the best way forward for America's energy resources??

Usually money speaks louder than any of these concerns, especially in the political arena, so it is refreshing that governments still "respect" the concerns of their people.

They may have the "right" to build the pipeline. But the question is should they do that? The protesters don't think that they should and they're trying to stop it. Property rights has nothing to do with the situation because (almost) nobody is saying that they don't legally have the right to do what they want.

There's lots of things that I don't think the government should do, maybe I should protest some of those things, but that doesn't mean that I think the government have the right to do most the things I would oppose.

I honestly don't care what they do with the pipeline, there's positives and negatives to it and it more complex than most people make it out to be. I won't complain if it is built and we can benefit from it, and I'll be proud of the natives if they do stop it. Either way is fine to me.

The real story here is how the media tried to bury the story and how badly protesters that were doing nothing wrong were treated by the cops.
