At the same time, it's primary goal is manufacturing material needs with advertising, so people work hard, spend more, and 'help the economy', and making rich people richer. Obviously a bit more to it then that, the BBC being a good example, but even that's not perfect.

You need to work on your spelling. A medium is just a method by which ideas are expressed. Mass media is probably what most people are referring to, and for areas such as television news, the bottom line is to get ratings. Same as any television show.
