Hey.

How would I go to making songs for a heavier band (my band)? Is it really as simple as just random riffs and chords? I mean, I've been trying that so far, and it's been working well...

while it can be random riffs and chords and stuff, that's boring, i think we all know that metal seems to be moving in a more change in time signature way

ah thanks a lot, i've been trying to get back into "learning" of bass, in the last few months i just seemed to be playing gigs.

I mean, I haven't actually sat down to practice in ages.

Though I don't feel like im getting worse, I certainly don't feel like im getting better which is why im trying to get back into the swing of things.

That swing of things is jazz band

jim stinnett, teacher at berklee, says the most productive time of his life was when he was playing a 5 hour gig every single night for 6 months straight, so you are on the right track for playing bass

I answered your question about coming up with a chord progression in the theory thread. I am pretty sure that HaVIC's answer will be loads more valuable than mine, but that was just one way that I was taught to go about coming up with the chord progression.

Like what? I don't really listen to much (any) metal, so what songs could be a good example of whatever?
Like what? I don't really listen to much (any) metal, so what songs could be a good example of whatever?
well, I used to absolutely hate metal (i actually believed and expressed those typical stereotypes as "they all drink beer, have aids and are noobs") but then I found a band called Meshuggah.

They're really heavy but I kept listening to them and even now after having all their albums for 6 months I still find cool rhythms.

Even though they currently don't have a bassist, I reckon they're a bassist's band because of how focused they are on rhythm, there's nothing remotely technical about them when you first hear them, but when you listen closely you can hear all sorts of things happening.

But they are incredibly heavy and use down tuned 8 string guitars.

Though im sure there are much more aged, learned metal heads than a lowly metal noob like myself, bands like Meshuggah and Gordian Knot (they're jazz/rock/metal sorta with Sean Malone on bass) who have a great deal of focus on rhythm are definately worth checking out.

I'm really not an expert though, those two bands are probably the only metal bands I always listen to, like I said, there are probably people here who listen to much more metal than I who could give you a better answer but i'm gonna try my best and recommend Meshuggah and Gordian Knot.

The reason I said "metal seems to be moving in a more change in time signature way" is because whenever I flick kerrang or scuzz on (god knows why i still go on those channels", I quite often sees bands more and more often who are usually more complex rhythms and going outside the common 4/4 time signature

Left Shoe 10-15-2006 06:20 PM

their song with the 23/16 signature comes to mind

Phalanx, I attempted to explained it again, but this time with examples!

I hope it helps. :)

I'd love to say it helped but I think you've only confused me further.

But like I said in my first post, I'm prepared to sit through and we're gonna get there (unless you give up which is understandable really)
