Is Dream Theater overrated?
How many sputnikers believe Dream Theater is overrated?
|
you could probably call them one of the pioneers of the genre
they have some cool tracks very technically talented musicians but simply not that interesting after a while |
I like Dream Theater, but I do believe they get a bit too much credit.

I'm somewhat along those lines. I dug Images & Words and Awake, but didn't enjoy other works such as Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence and Systematic Chaos. Plus, their riffs just don't do it for me and the keyboards often feel over-the-top. Not to mention that Portnoy's drumming often feels rather average and Petrucci's solos rather devoid of feeling. Again, that's just my opinion. They have Mangini on drums now, but I could care less. |
heh yeah, portnoy didn't expect that treatment, ka-pow
|
yeah they fucking suck
|
Thy our no woe is me.
|
they all play satan's skin flute with blistering precision
|
Well, I'm glad I'm not the only one who thinks they're overrated.

Is the pope Catholic?
|
If the credit is given to their newer stuff: yes.
older stuff: hell no |
Images and Words is most certainly not. Like it or not, it's one of the most influential prog-metal albums of all time. Scenes From a Movie and their other works, however, are. They barely add any variation from album to album

It is indeed, but I'd like to mention that Queensryche's first 3 LPs, Watchtower's first 2 and Fates Warning's first 3 (with Ray Alder) all preceded it (though I've only listened to Paralells from FW; all the others mentioned I've already heard). But yes, I won't deny it was influential. I simply don't consider it the masterpiece many say it is. |
Only 11 votes. I expected more...
|
Still needs more votes, I'm not satisfied.
|
Dream Theater were one of the first metal bands I listened to and really liked, so they have a ton of sentimental value for me. Images and Words is an undisputed classic of the genre and it's easily my favourite, however I can't help but enjoy their later, more wanky and pretentious stuff as well. I can't answer the poll because it'll be too biased.

I always liked dream theater but it can get cringe worthy when you catch how much they "borrow" from artists. I'm not talking light inspiration, but direct lifting and using it as their own.
Jordan seems like the coolest guy in the band, anything he does I try to keep up with. His open mindedness to work with new instruments and try new things makes him extremely cool. |
Yeah, I've always respected him.

correcto. Here's one of me likeable Fate's Warning songs you may not have heard. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h_w9kpBYl0g |
Dream Theater was collapsed even from the get go with them vying for crossover potential. Not to say their first major album wasn't good, its just that it was stretching to be something more accessible and safe from misrepresentation to the listeners who weren't as into core metal bands of the times.

They're all very talented for sure, and they deserve a listen if you play an instrument yourself, as to see what also exists and soforth |
I think they're awful.
yeah but you probably listen to the xx which is even worse. |

Fans may chide me for it, but unlike bands such as Queensryche and Watchtower, they sound too much like their influences. |

Nope, haven't listened to them. |
prob the most technical music I've ever heard together with spastic ink, it's fun to listen to

if you like Ron Jarzombek's style listen to Watchtower:Control and Resistance. And he was in another group....oddly enough with Myung(DT bassist) and Sean Malone + Sean Reinhert(the rhythm section of Cynic)
