Recommendations
Ok well in the Jazz/Funk forums - all we get is "What's some good Funk" or "Recommend me Jazz" all the time and it just feels like your repeating yourself everyday.
Well to make sure this doesn't happen again - I have made this thread so that everyone can post their favourite funk/Jazz artists followed by songs that you would recommend. Also feel free to put in as much extra info on the artist as you wish eg. recommended albums, bio, why you like the artist, if you like this artist you'll probably like.....etc etc. Also state what genre the artist fits into. Ok i'll start - James Brown Soul/Funk Recommended songs - Sex Machine Papa's got a brand new bag Living in America I feel Good I'm a Soul Man It's a Man's World Soul Power The Big Payback Recommended album - Live at the Apollo If you like this artist you will probably like- Curtis Mayfield and Isaac Hayes. etc etc Feel free to put in as many recommendations as you want. |
Odd . . . I think I've seen this thread before :p .
I agree with you, though, that's all I see any more in this forum. It's true, there have been loads of 'official' funk threads and jazz threads. Only the jazz ones ever get stickied though, so the funk ones keep on coming. Can we please have one stickied?
|
just about to ask that
|
Well if we had a mod this would get stickied straight away but the chances of the Jazz/Funk forums getting a mod are pretty slim.
I know this kind of thread has been done before but there just seems to be an excess of people looking for this kind of thread at the moment. Try and keep it alive and available:thumb: |
I posted in the site forum yesterday about this being pinned. It could be a really useful thread.
|
I've not been here for months... does jazz/funk STILL need a mod? I thought at least one of the regulars could have the potential to be modded. It got way out of hand with constant request threads and not much else, and you really need one
|
I don't mean to be mean or anything, but let's try and keep this thread to recommendations. :thumb:

The new wave of jazz/funk posters are seeing the problems now :-p
Hopefully this thread works out better than the last official ones. It would really help the forums. |

MICKEY AND THE SOUL GENERATION
Tunes: Ironleg We Got to Make a Change Give Everybody Some Album: Ironleg: The Complete Mickey and the Soul Generation (Cali-Tex) Compiled by DJ Shadow from tracks recorded between 1969 and 1977. Lovingly researched, documented and remastered. A must for anyone interested in funk music, and a great study in how funk evolved over this period from groove-driven r'n'b to more progressive, fusion-esque styles. |

DESCO RECORDS
Funk Breaking with tradition and featuring a label rather than a band.... This label was founded in the late 90's by Phillipe Lehman and Gabriel Roth, purely to record and release new funk records. 7" singles sold out almost the instant they were shipped, but LPs and CDs can still be found (if you search).... Artists: The Soul Providers Sugarman 3 Lee Fields The Daktaris The Mighty Imperials Singles: Who's The King - Joseph Henry Steam Train - Lee Fields 41st Street Breakdown - Naomi Watts **** It's Hot - Sharon Jones Papa's Got A Brand New Bag - Sugarman 3 NB: All 7" singles were released on compilation CDs Spike's Choice and Spike's Choice vol 2 LPs: Gimme The Paw - The Soul Providers Sugar's Boogaloo - Sugarman 3 Soul Donkey - Sugarman 3 Let's Get A Groove On - Lee Fields The Label shut down and Lehman and Roth went their seperate ways - Lehman went on to establish Soul Fire records (specialising in lo-fi, heavy, progressive funk and afro-beat), and Roth went on to form Daptone records (more of a retro r'n'b funk revue kind of sound). |
Rage Against The Machine? What? WHAT? I just don't get it.
They have a funk influence, particularly in the rhythms they used. |
