Pics of luthiery work/ modding projects

Ok, since this is a new section, and rightfully named 'luthiery and modding' thanks to wintermute, how about we show off some of our handiwork. Be it guitars or basses you've built or modded, or pedals you've made from the ground up (right now my tube-based wah is getting under way). How about showing off your works so everyone can see how good of work you do sooo then there'll be backing to what you say/ said you've done along these lines.

Post away

Son of Magni 05-07-2006 11:45 AM

Well, since I can't resist any chance to show off, this is a bass that is almost done. Just need to put on the knobs, mount the control cavity door, and put on the strap locks...

Oh yeah, and there's a story. Someone wants me to build him a bass and everything's going fine with the design, then he says "oh, can you make it a headless?".

Edit, just switching to a better pic...

Edit, I guess I killed that pic from my server.....

ebe9 05-07-2006 12:05 PM

^^Beautiful work

Can't understand why the guy opted for headless?

Also what was the shaping on the head before?

My standard headstock is like this (this is a 6-string in progress).

^^ I had a sneaky feeling it would be something along those lines.

Now to me that fits in idealy with the style of that particular bass.

Peg Dizzler 05-07-2006 01:46 PM

SoM, it seems like I've seen that on mimf. You go there? :)

Son of Magni 05-07-2006 02:40 PM

Ha ha, yes Peg! And I think I have a new bass to post there if I can get some good pics today. I finished everything during the last couple hours, and it is a sweet thing :)

Peg Dizzler 05-08-2006 08:46 PM

Awesome!!
What's your name on mimf?

I saw the picture of your bass and I was like.. "I know I've seen that bass before!" Or at least that style anyway. And you made the brass bridge for that too, right?

shred_like_me 05-09-2006 12:29 AM

dude that is 1 stylin bass dnt no y you would want it headless tho:amaze:

espbassist 05-09-2006 03:55 AM

Yeah, a mad design, I'm modding my old ****ty $200 into a more viper look, and fretless. How much does it cost to get all the electronics redone???????????????

FunkMetalBass 05-09-2006 11:04 AM

Gawd SoM. Your stuff is always the best. STOP MAKING THE REST OF US LOOK BAD!!!!

Nice job :thumb:

lateralus423 05-09-2006 11:21 AM

Jesus som thats so efffffffffing hot.

pitchfork 05-09-2006 12:42 PM

Thats ****ing awesome.
If your in england your making one for me, how much would you change for something like that?

Miek 05-09-2006 12:56 PM

I would also like to know how much something like that would cost.

Son of Magni 05-09-2006 01:59 PM

Anyone who is seriously interested in my basses should contact me through my website or email address. I don't think this is the right place to discuss prices and stuff like that. Does that make sense?

ThorBass

Oh yeah Peg, hopefully you found my thread with this bass on mimf. If not, you can derive my name from my email address...

moghes69 05-09-2006 08:00 PM

to make SoM's bass look even better. here is a bass that i built a new body for. it was just a rough attempt so i could get a feel for what some of the process would be like. and since then i defretted the neck.

Miek 05-09-2006 08:08 PM

I would love to have a guitar built for me, in the way that basses are built.
Like, with 'exotic' woods and such.

Hmm. I have a neck which I've reshaped the headstock on, and I'm gonna finish it.

I'm gonna buy a sanded down body from ebay and finish it too. Good practise.

I have loads of electric stuff on the go. Pickguards and stuff.

Killer Fridge 05-11-2006 12:18 PM

semi 05-11-2006 01:14 PM
oh damn didint notice that this was in the bass forums.. lol sorry sorry sorry
It's a shared guitar/bass forum.

neatobassman 05-11-2006 02:20 PM

we should get drum modifications in here too....because I know my drummer does and bunch of weird stuff to his drums like shallowing out shells, putting on different patterns of material on the shells and stuff like that.

hellonearth07 05-11-2006 03:08 PM

I'm guessing this forum's just general mod's and lutheiry
and i guess that includes everything from guitar to bass to drums to kazoo to harmonica and any other strange and abstract instrument u wanna play and mod out

semi 05-11-2006 03:10 PM

washboad

AG 05-11-2006 03:25 PM

I put LED's in my washboard a while back. It ruined the tone, just destroyed those second level harmonics.

hellonearth07 05-11-2006 03:26 PM

sadly, i've seen a page where someone played a kazoo through a wah pedal

Peg Dizzler 05-11-2006 04:00 PM

Lutherie is the making of wooden instruments. Drums apply!! :D

I'm actually gonna get a set soon I think, a real junky one, for $50. I haven't actually seen it yet but it has been described to me. So I'll probably mess around with that sometime... I'm guessing the shells are wrapped, so I'm sure eventually I'll take that off and lacquer 'em up sometime, mmm shiny. =)
