I think most would agree that Pop-Punk is becoming a monotonous genre of music. Power chords, strained singing and "catchy" hooks are becoming so common that bands are becoming nothing but indistinguishable white noise.

So, In this thread, I propose we embark on a search for bands that have something new, something special, a spark to light the flame and a melody to rekindle the warmth of our love of Pop-Punk.

ITT: Post bands that are different, yet still fit under the umbrella of the term 'Pop-Punk'.[b] Do not confuse this with the Official Recommendations Thread"[/b], this isn't a thread to recommend what it is you're currently listening too, this is a thread to expand on the one sound genre.

Let the journey begin.

[url=http://www.purevolume.com/gatsbysamericandream]Gatsby's American Dream[/url] deserve a mention in this thread. They blend other styles into their music so well, and actually don't always stick to the 4/4 time signature.

I suggest listening to "Shhhhh! I'm Listening To Reason", "A Mind Of Metal And Wheels" and "The Dragon Of Pendor" on their Purevolume, since they all demonstrate their style so well

i dont have anything to offer except that i agree with the thread starter. and i hate the term pop punk, thought it does serve a purpose i guess. isn't punk the opposite of pop. i think mainstream punk may be a better genre name.

though it may be considered emo or rock i'd recommending checking out "last days of april." it was one of the bands that i started getting into when i was bored of blink, jimmy, etc. best songs: "aspirins and alcohol" and "days i recall being wonderful" the whole album "angel youth" sounds very organically progressive to me.

Maybe Sparta and Thursday. The Kinison too. It's hard to think of bands that are totally unique.

Bad Astronaut, Choke, Epoxies, Bigwig, Satanic Surfers, Craig's Brother, Inspection 12, Strung Out.

I wish it was still 1994...

True, we are living in a low, low age for pop-punk.

Ack, sparta's booooooooooring. And i dont think either of those are pop-punk (or really closely related).

I like Sparta. And I know they're not totally pop punk, but to me they sound influenced by it.

And you're right about SKSK. They are good.

This thread reminds me why ive started to listen to indie agian, because im plane bored with pop-punk, and indie is better.

BRITISH INDIE, you could say some bands are brit pop

Ive been listening to the smiths, nine black alps, maximo park, arcade fire, 'phonics etc etc.

There the main bands ive been listening to recently.

I switched over to post-hardcore/hardcore a while ago. I still have a warm spot in my heart for co/ca (still my favorite band), TBS (Still have my favorite CD), and saves the day (still just overall really, really good), though.

I realy do not like most hardcore, i like some, but most of it i dont.

You know what is the worst genre ever i think, imo, metalcore :evil:

Noise Ratchet, The Kinison (Eh, pushy, but someone else mentioned them), Strung Out, Scary Kids Scaring Kids, A Wilhelm Scream (eh again)

That's pushing Pop-Punk, but they're some of my favorite bands with recent material in this general vein.

Im not big on metalcore either, but i wont go as far as to call it the worst genre ever. That honor clearly goes to Techno (and not interesting, unique techno, im talking about techno with just a 'mm tss mm tss' beat and nothing else).

Actually, some metalcore is pretty good. Listen to more, maye youll find something you like.

To be honest, I've not had many problems with pop-punk fo late. Sure, it can get pretty samey, but I've heard a lot of new stuff I've really liked of late. I'm not just gonna pretend I'm not happy with every band sounding something other than totally different. Save the thread from being a chorus of agreement if nothing else.


I am tempted to have another sly dig at Butler's steadily worsening fondness for rubbish indie, but I'll resist this time :p

Uniqueness really can't be found in pop-punk any more. Everyone does something that someone else does. A lot of genres work this way, and few bands can really manage to be 'out there' and different. Horse The Band and Genghis Tron come to mind.

As for as pop-punk goes, uniqueness comes from just being especially good at what you do. Like WILHELM MOTHER****ING SCREAM!

While innovation is good, at the end of the day, I'm a lover of the pop-punk style and sound, so if a band plays that in a generic but extremely good way, I'm far more likely to enjoy them than a band that tries to be different for the sake of originality. See Allister as a prime example.

Maybe a band I'd consider unique: [URL="http://www.purevolume.com/thetokyosmash"]The Tokyo Smash[/URL]. I can't name any other pop-punk band that incorporates breakdowns and a really agressive screamer to the extent that they do.

i like these indie/pop-punk bands with keyboard lines that are starting to gain popularity. Like P!ATD, The AKAs, Hellogoodbye... Does anyone know other bands like them?

Motion City Soundtrack, Housten Calls, although Housten Calls are what I would call "turd".

try the maple state for sysnth based stuff... very diffrent to P!ATD but just as good in its own way, other bands i can think of are [URL="http://www.purevolume.com/valencia"]Valencia[/URL] who are being hailed as the best new poppunk band around, the album is stunning from what i've heard, i need to get my hands on it and give it a real lission... also, bands like, over it, there a little over looked i think there first album is far better than the new one but still awsome... also take a look at some of the ealiar punchline stuff, espicaly the rewind ep which is nothing but simply stunning...

i've actaly found that its not so much that there are not any good bands doing intresting stuff but it dose seem very much like there first "major" albums all end up being over prouducsed and over worked and written so they ended up bland and all sounding samey

I always found Valencia quite boring, but I might have to listen to the album again. TMS are a great band as well, I have their EP and it's fun to listen to.

P!atD and TAI are two great pop-punk bands that I have discovered this year.
