Rocking Females

So here's the deal. At my school they have this open stage night thing where everybody that feels like it can show their creative side. It's just something for fun. This girl came up to me the other day asking me if she could do a song with our band. Now the problem is, i don't know a lot of bands with female vocals. Can you people please help me out here? :).

I'm looking for bands that have female lead vocals. (I'm talking about bands like Metric) Please post some band names and a song that you would suggest listening too.

Thanks in advance.

3 words. Auf. Der. Maur.

Yes, the solo act of Melissa Auf Der Maur is not only good, but also outstanding considering that she played with Hole, another band with female vocals done by Corteney Love.

Cranberries have female vocals. K's Choice, some Anathema tracks also contain female vocals. The Breeders have that girl from the Pixies....theres loads.

So, if I can help you out in anyway with these bands let me know.

Scrawl.

Tomahawk 11-01-2005 08:28 AM

Wait, do you want rocking, or do you want bands like Metric?

If you want rocking, you can't go wrong with PJ Harvey. Well... you can, but pick a good song.

Krash100 11-01-2005 09:41 AM

Alanis Morisette has some good stuff you could do

On the whole I don't like girl performers. There are the odd expections (like Metric and Stars, both of whom I know you're familiar with) but mostly I avoid girls in music, unless it's pop. I don't even like most of the SY songs where Kim Gordon sings. :\

You should try some Melissa Auf Der Maur.

I really believe that album rocks. :amaze:

DiFranco.

Sols, I can't believe you haven't delved into Ani yet. If you need help, let me know. I've got nearly everything.

Tomahawk 11-01-2005 11:46 AM

I love female singers. But I also hate it when Kim Gordon sings.

Honestly, I could give you a heap of recommendations, but I'm not sure what type of music you're looking for, exactly.

lil_drummer_girl 11-01-2005 11:46 AM

yeah Melissa Auf der Maur is awesome. So is Paz Lenchantin (former APC, Zwan, Papa M, etc).

Oh, how could I forget about her! Ani Difranco is, in my opinion, one of the best female musicians out there.

morrissey 11-01-2005 11:48 AM

Does Auf Der Maur fall in the same vein as the Pumpkins music? I wouldn't be opposed to giving her a try.

And I forgot to mention Blondie, I love Blondie. Try "Heart of Glass".

antiant 11-01-2005 11:50 AM

Pretty sure he's not looking for the Arch Enemy/Otep type of music.

But whatever, here's my list of my favourite female singstresses then.

Elizabeth Fraser (Cocteau Twins, and "Teardrop" by Massive Attack)
Joni Mitchell
Cat Power
Bjork
Ani DiFranco
Kate Bush
Patty Griffin
Beth Gibbons (Portishead)
Marcy Mays (Scrawl)
Kylie Minogue
Dusty Springfield
Patti Smith

yeah i just figured i'd add them anyways *shrugs*

JonM 11-01-2005 12:09 PM

I second Björk and Cat Power, and don't forget Jenny Lewis from Rilo Kiley. I've got more, too, but those three and Ani rock the most.
Cranberries have female vocals.
Yeah! do 'Linger'.

If not you could do something like 'gigantic' by the pixies...

Ma Cherie 11-01-2005 12:16 PM

Kidney thieves
Kitty
evanesence
TaTu
Blumchen
BeForYou
dj sammy
do as infinity

lilsolsman 11-01-2005 01:29 PM

Thanks for the recommendations, i'll go check some of it out. People do need to understand that a random girl in my clas isn't going to be interested in something like Kitty. Also, we don't have a pianist in our band, :(, so that rules out some of the people as well. It has to be a little more poppy and acceptable. Thanks for the recommendations though. :)

As for Ani DiFranco, recommend me some songs, i've never heard anything of hers that i really liked. Although i must admit, i've not listened to a lot of her stuff.

Sam 11-01-2005 01:32 PM

My Bloody Valentine?

antiant 11-01-2005 01:34 PM

Ani DiFranco songs:

1. Falling is like this
2. Dog Coffee
3. Out of Habit
4. Outta Me Onto You
5. Not A Pretty Girl

Interstate 11-01-2005 01:52 PM

Michelle Branch
Imogen Heap/Frou Frou

I'll Take The Veil 11-01-2005 02:00 PM

Depending on what kind of band is backing her...maybe you could try some of broken social scenes's stuff off the new album, maybe swimmers?

Its like the Pumpkins, but got some pop-influences. Definatley surprised on how good it was when I got it. Let me know if I can give it to you.

Chilifanthatsme 11-01-2005 04:39 PM
Also, we don't have a pianist in our band, :(, so that rules out some of the people as well.
Not neccesarily, for Evanesence for example you don't need a keyboard. You could transpose the most of it to another guitar or just do the main notes from it, don't rule that out.

Happymeal 11-01-2005 05:08 PM

Denali (Maura Davis <3) - "Gunner", "Hold Your Breath"

Elysian Fields (Jennifer Charles, who is also in Lovage) - "Live for the Touch", "Narcosmicoma", "Sex, I'm A"(Lovage)

Sleater-Kinney (all 3 of them sing) - "Ironclad", "The Fox"

sr800bkAGAIN! 11-01-2005 10:39 PM

most My Bloody Valentine
some Sonic Youth
some Pixies
Breeders
most Slowdive

but in a band with a female singer myself, before we had our own material we covered Just Like Heaven by the Cure. it sounded awesome. i'd say many songs originally sung by guys sound cool when changed to female vocals. as long as it has a strong melody, so she isn't just wailing in monotone.

OrbDragon 11-02-2005 04:04 AM

PJ Harveys early stuff is pretty rockin'. "Rid Of Me" is produced by Steve Albini.

Ani is one of my favorites, but her way of songwriting is an acquired taste. Personally I think she's amazing. Her songs reflect her personality, and not many songwriters today have that ability.

rubbishwithnames 11-04-2005 06:06 AM

Another vote for Ani DiFranco here.

Or possibly check out Dot Allison if you're going for a chilled vibe.

Sound Boy 11-04-2005 06:51 AM

You may want to check out Sneakerpimps as well, they have a female singer with a beautiful voice, and the music is awesome.
