Wolfmother

May or may not have heard of this Australian band (Sydney). Their debut album comes out today (Monday), they have not made any impact in America yet, but I believe in the UK they are known. They are certainly known in Australia, surprisingly having a place in the top 10 with their latest single "Mind's Eye".

They are often described as Led Zepplin and Black Sabbath for a modern day audience which I believe to be fairly accurate. I realise how dangerous this comparison is, but they have a force and an energy that allows them to pull it off without falling into a dreadful parody of the rock bands of the last century. The vocalists' voice is pretty impressive, alot of people compare to Robert Plant, I wouldn't agree there but it's definately good, possibly in a different way.

You can check them out on their website, with a tiny snippet of "Mind's Eye", or you might be able to download that track or the more rocking "Woman". I know the video of "Mind's Eye" is on their site.

Anyway, decent Sydney band that I shall be purchasing the album of.

Thoughts?

From that description, they sound pretty awesome. I'll check their site out.

3rdplanet 10-30-2005 05:02 PM

hum, sounds promosing, will have a look around their site.

StreetlightRock 10-30-2005 06:22 PM

Wolfmother are one of the best semi-mainstream bands out there today, from what i've heard so far. And they do it without the gimmicks and s'hit too. Just staright up Rock. I beleive they were a Led Zeppelin cover band before.

cap 10-31-2005 12:09 AM

Yeh, there album is out now. You can get it on torrentspy.com which is a shame. I think I'll buy it. It's had awesome reviews, one exclaiming it being the best rock album from Australia in a long while. I can't wait to hear it.

Tomahawk 10-31-2005 12:23 AM

They're really very derivative. They have their moments, but overall they're just a step up from a tribute band.

That song Minds Eye is definitely better than their previous stuff, but it's also a big ol' ripoff of The Real Thing by Russell Morris.

Oh and do they do that Apple Tree song? Because I really hate that song.

StreetlightRock 10-31-2005 12:33 AM

Yea, that one can get really whiney. But I dunno, I dig what they do generally, just their whole sound.

plaidbassbilly 10-31-2005 03:45 AM

I like their song "Woman", it's actually the only one of theirs I've heard, and it's pretty rad.

Tangy zizzle 10-31-2005 04:09 AM

I am an expert (don't lie to yourself, man) on these types of bands, and Wolfmother get a big ol WOOOO from me.

they're a very cool band. Sure, they're not original, but they're badarse and they're actually pretty fresh. They're a damm tight light act (saw 'em twice in 2 days earlier this month) and they have wicked hair.

Also, Minds Eye sounds like Jethro Tull, and Tull are awesome, so that's a good thing.

sgrevs 10-31-2005 04:26 AM

Just posted bout them in R&M, but another is always fine. I love Dimension its their best song, or maybe The White Unicorn. Can't to hear their new album, should be uber-brilliant. And im seeing the at Falls in December, anyone else goin? cya there!

cap 10-31-2005 04:55 AM

Im hoping they play BDO, my mateis seeing em on Friday.

bah 10-31-2005 05:13 AM

Yeah, i really really dig wolfmother. They're new film clip makes me want to hold my guitar up under my armpit when i play... :) Seriously can't wait to hear the album though. The Apple Tree song reminds me of Stripes.

robot 11-01-2005 12:38 AM

They're reeeal cool.

Jim 11-04-2005 04:25 AM

Triple J's been flogging them all week, and I'm seriously impressed. 'Collossal' is really cool and very...large? They're probably getting sick of comparisons, but they really do sound like Led Zeppelin, particularly that 'White Unicorn' song, which I really like. I'm buying the album, pronto.

Tomahawk 11-04-2005 08:54 AM

I doubt they're sick of that comparison.

Jim 11-05-2005 04:37 AM

One day they will. But until then - hooray for the Led Zeppelin-ness!

slash2005 11-05-2005 03:26 PM

wolfmother rocks
iv had the album for a week and havnt turned it off
and im seeing them in 4 days!!!!!!!!!!!!!

gaslight 11-05-2005 11:21 PM

They're alright, good musicians but I can't stand the singer.

They were pretty good on Live At The Wireless the other night though.

But yeah, I just can't take the vocals.

W.M.A 11-07-2005 12:41 AM

I bought wolfmothers ep and album...both fantastic. It's good to see something listenable in Australian music, which is at an all time low in my opinion.
Apple tree sounds a helluva lot like My Doorbell by the white stripes.

Fabrizzio 11-07-2005 01:39 AM

^^^ Ill second that, Australian music has been absolutely dreadful of late.

the_midnight_rambler 11-07-2005 02:03 AM

They are decent, a basic rock band though, they dont do anything too different from too many other bands that make them particularly special, but they are good at what they do, they are playing at fall's this year in Lorne (I'm Australian). It's like a 3 night festival, bout 50 bands playing, most of them Australian, but The Dandy Warhols are playing, and their American as far as I know

FUnkarockadrummer 11-07-2005 04:12 AM

Yeah im a big fan of their stuff. My friend got fre tix to see them the other night the bastard.

Sure they arent the most original band around at the moment but i think what they do they do really well and I'd take it over 95% of other australian music out at the moment.

Ulysses 11-11-2005 03:16 PM

Great band, saw them last week and I'll be seeing them twice more before the year ends. Great live too.

(Hail to the thief) 11-11-2005 10:14 PM

whats up with all the wolf bands, wow

Tapeworm 11-11-2005 11:17 PM

More like crudmother ahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha

sgrevs 11-11-2005 11:47 PM

WOOOLFMOTHER wat a band wat a debut album, brilliant really, 4.5/5 from me. great live seein them at falls and hopefully BDO(please god?) and hooeva sed the thing bout falls, tons of abnds arent australian, such as dandy warhols, shins, zutons, ozmatli and many more i cant care to find. Wicked.

Rubber_soul 11-12-2005 12:15 AM

i saw wolfmother play a couple of nights ago, and now i'm even more hooked on them than i was before. they are awesome live. mind's eye is a great track, so is woman. they do sound like a blend of a few 70's bands, but they're not as unoriginal as most of the other aussie acts going around at the moment.

Tapeworm 11-12-2005 12:19 AM
iband that actually sound original and not just a knock-off of mainstream US rock blah blah blah
Exsqueeze me?

Rubber_soul 11-12-2005 12:21 AM

Rubber_soul 11-12-2005 12:31 AM

and of course led zeppelin wouldnt be a US band at all, would they.

Tapeworm 11-12-2005 12:32 AM

Rubber_soul 11-12-2005 12:35 AM

Tapeworm 11-12-2005 12:38 AM

Tapeworm 11-12-2005 12:54 AM

i hate jokes.

mr black 11-14-2005 07:58 AM

Saw them saturday night in Melbourne, even more unbelievable than the first time a saw them (a year back), one of the best live act's i've seen, his voice is soooo perfect live, and they know exactly how to build the crowd up. If any singer has sounded like Ozzy this is it. Awsome show...

Also could someone give me one good reason why this thread isn't in Rock/Metal, if Zepp and Sabbath are in there, why aren't Wolfmother ???

cap 11-14-2005 04:21 PM

It was in there, but I think the thread died.

W.M.A 11-17-2005 04:59 AM

wolfmother playing big day out...good for those of us under 18 who missed their show at the forum in melbourne

StreetlightRock 11-17-2005 05:32 AM
