so, do you guys have anything against rock and metal?
A lot of my friends that listen to punk seem to hold Rock and Metal in contempt, scoffing at those that listen to it. I used to listen to punk and feel sort of the same way, as if the R&Mers were missing out on something, buuut now I prefer R&M over punk and yeah it just got me thinking. FOR INSTANCE, the other day, I was telling my "punk" friend how much I enjoyed this Rush album I got, and she's like "really, Rush?" as if Rush is like, baby music! Then I asked if she had ever heard any Rush, and she hadn't. It's a filthy prejudice, and it seems to be pretty common, at least among people I know in real life.
So anyway, what do you guys think of R&M/its listeners? |
I don't hold anything against it, i just don't like it. I think musically metal especially has some good stuff, and great guiatr solos but i don't like it much if you see what i mean.
Although i think i understand it better cos my mate is a metal head and an amazing guitar player |
I like it! i think its important to kick around in different genres. You should never count yourself as a single genre and just say "you like good music". No matter what it is
|
I like some metal and rock but metal is overrated in my opinion.
I preffer jazz or funk over metal anyday. |

you know it
|
Some metal rules. Most doesn't. I try my damnedest not to be prejudiced, though.
|
im the exact opposite im prejudice against punk i really dont see why anyone can like it but i guess i need to hear more before i judge
:Runs Back To R&M Before Gets Ass Kicked: |
It all comes down to my tastes being prejudice, not me! I don't limit or restrict my tastes, I just listen to what I like. There are few metal albums I will listen to with Slayer's 'Reign in Blood' being one of them. As for rock I just listen to few random bands including The Doors, Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers, AC/DC etc.
You shouldn't limit your tastes but at the same time you shouldn't feel the need to expand your musical tastes just for the sake of doing so. I relate best to specific bands in the punk/ska/dub genres and I enjoy listening to them the most. |
im the exact opposite im prejudice against punk i really dont see why anyone can like it but i guess i need to hear more before i judge
:Runs Back To R&M Before Gets Ass Kicked:
The difference is we don't have prejudices against metal, we just don't like most of it. Not trying to flame, but prejudices are stupid. I mean, if you can't stand punk just because it's simple you need to rethink your whole scheme of music. |
I like both equally. Freaks Union are my faverouite band, along with Arsis. One is punk, one is Death Metal.
|
I listen to a fair bit of rock and metal, specifically classic rock (I'm a huge Beatles fan). I love a couple punk bands, but I'm mostly into Alt/Indie stuff.
|
I'm a huuuge metal fan (in fact, I'm going to see Vital Remains tonight :cool: ), but I'm also a huuuge punk fan. I like good music - there's good music in both genres, so I'll listen to both genres. Here are some of my absolutely favourite bands ever;
Strike Anywhere Dissection A Wilhelm Scream Immortal Protest the Hero Bridge to Solace Lagwagon Vital Remains Agoraphobic Nosebleed Rise Against Converge NOFX Dillinger Escape Plan ...and the list could go on, mixing punk and metal like never before. I like hard, fast guitar-driven music, I guess. I've never understood people who like one of the genres, but hates the other. |
if you can't stand punk just because it's simple you need to rethink your whole scheme of music.
thats actually one of the big reasons i got into metal i was tired of the simplistic stuff i started picking up guitar ans when i did that i started listening to a whole bunch of players (Steve Vai, Paul Gilbert, Yngwie Malmsteen, Zakk Wylde) then i started to get into alot of metal bands from there. |
thats funny saying that because years ago there was only really punk, hardcore punk, metal, and death metal.
there were no sub-genres when i started listening to punk and metal |
I picked guitar too but I can't stand the 100 nps solos that sound so overcrowded with notes. That's one of the reasons why I don't like metal, also the riffing absolutely bores me.
What I like in a song is mostly energy and originality.
most of those are metalcore arent they? i dunno about NOFX i hear them mentioned all over the place i thought they where punk.
Most of those bands aren't metalcore. Lagwagon, NOFX = pop-punk Strike Anywhere, A Wilhelm scream, Rise Against = melodic hardcore Protest The Hero = metal/punk |
What I like in a song is mostly energy and originality.
and metal doesn't  im complete opposite i get completly blown away when i hear shredding like that and the riffs can get stuck in my head for days. |
i like the metal only for the wonderful solos....some metal guitarist are fantastic...
|
I don't like metal much tbh.
I like the odd band, including SOAD, Converge and DEP. (not strictly metal, but w/e) |

I like both genres, and now I'm actually starting to get into metal and grind more than punk and pop punk. |
A lot of grind and crust stuff is considered by some people to be a form of metal, so I suppose I listen to metal. Iskra has been described as metal, and I also listen to stuff like Assuck, Napalm Death, and Agoraphobic Nosebleed.
But a lot of "rock" sucks, so I don't listen to it. But I still don't have anything against it; those guys put just as much effort into it as we do our genre. |
I can't stand most metal. Most of it conist of a drummer using a whole lotta double bass and a guy screaming. It just sounds too boring.
|
Protest The Hero = metal/punk
Are you joking? |
Metal murdered my whole family and I can never forgive it for that. That's why I take to the streets on my motorcycle every night.
For revenge. |
I like some metal and rock but metal is overrated in my opinion.
I preffer jazz or funk over metal anyday.
Thats my opinion, more or less. My brother is a huge metal fan, I think the metal he listens to (Power Metal) is cheesy and laughable. But I do like some metal bands. Black Sabbath, Iron Madien(some of the time), and electric wizard. |
Thrash metal rules. I don't like much else in metal.
|
I'm not a huge fan of either metal and rock but I listen to a couple of bands.
|
I like Venom. But personally, Led zeppelin, ACDC, and all those others I am getting sick of seeing, and hearing about.
|
Oh yeah, Def Leppard \m/
|
I listen to all styles of music. Actually, I'd have to say metal is my favorite.
|

pqrs.
and metal doesn't
im complete opposite i get completly blown away when i hear shredding like that and the riffs can get stuck in my head for days.
Exactly. Metal doesn't have the kind of energy I like and it's not original at all from my point of view (if it's original from any point of view). Agreed with that?
Are you joking?
No, it said so in purevolume and I read it so I'm sharing it. If it's wrong you correct me but no irony please. |
If you limit yourself to one genre, you are hendering your self. Music is a lot more then one genre and should be enjoyed that way, you may prefer one over the other, like I perfer punk and its sub-genres over rock and metal, but I don't hate those genres and like plenty of bands within them. Anyone who says another genre 'sucks' usually is an ignorant fool who feels the need to be elitist to make themselves look bigger.
|
I love Rock and Metal, although most of the new Metal is trash.
|

I have nothing against metal. I don't like it, if that is what you are asking. But I have nothing against it. I don't mind some music with metal influences and what not. And it's the genre that introduced me to rock n roll when I was eleven or so. Or I should say that I noticed when I was eleven. I liked it for a couple of years. I thought it was rock n roll, really. Then I heard the Who and the Clash and just never looked backed. Kind of put me on a different path. So no, I don't like metal. And I don't know what you mean by "rock", but I'm pretty sure I like it.
Exactly. Metal doesn't have the kind of energy I like and it's not original at all from my point of view (if it's original from any point of view). Same way, I can listen to Leftover Crack/Bad Religion and Cryptopsy and Decapitated back to back Death metal, and punk |
I listen to bands and if I like them I will continue to listen to them.
