Effects!

Hey!
What do you dudes out there think about FX on bass? Because ive recently been having argument with people wether or not bassists should have pedals, personaly im a BIG fan of pedals, myself owning 3 and looking to buy a fourth.

I currently own:
A Digitech X-Series Grunge Pedal (Distorstion-£40)
A Bespeco Weeper Wah and Volume Control (Wah And Volume-£30)
A Danelectro 'Grilled Cheese' (Distorstion-£30-DO NOT BUY!)

Leave lots of pretty posts!

SlapnPop 08-12-2005 12:38 PM

pedals are cool. I think there is nothing wrong with bassists using effects

I have:
A Zoom 706 multi effects pedal
EHX Russian Big Muff

I just won a Digitech BP8 Preamp/Effects Modeler off of Ebay for $136(canadian funds) and it is going to be amazing

the_cow_crap_man 08-12-2005 12:42 PM

i dont have any FX pedals, i wouldnt mind trying a few though.

Why is the danelectro 'grilled cheese' so bad? please tell me, i havnt tried it but i just wondered why.

What does 'Bass Equipment Reviews' mean to you?

There's an announcement up in the Bass Equipment Reviews subforum. Give it a click. :thumb:

bassman9985 08-12-2005 03:59 PM

My meager guitar setup translates fine onto bass.

1. BOSS Chromatic Tuner
2. Ibanez Echo/Delay
3. BOSS Distortion
4. BOSS Loop Station

deemo 08-12-2005 04:01 PM

i like effects. i have an EHX russian muff and bass balls, mxr phase 90, onerr dd-1 (delay) , DOD bass overdrive, which is being used for my drum machine, and a dunlop crybaby wah. oh and a digitech bp80.

Chris K 08-12-2005 04:02 PM

My only pedal (so far) is a Digitech bass driver distortion pedal, and I love it.

Ian 08-12-2005 04:14 PM

All I run is a Tech 21 Bass Driver DI. Great investment, can give you tones ranging from slight overdrive...like a tube amp starting to get pushed hard, to balls to the wall crunch. Can function as a stomp box or a pre-amp. Overall just a real asskicking piece of gear.

I work for Tech 21 and its easily our top selling product. We probably move more bass drivers than all our other pedals combined.

EADG 08-12-2005 04:25 PM

I only have a Zoom 506II and a Crybaby Bass Wah, although (once I get the money) I hope to get:

Digitech Bass Driver
BOSS Bass Chorus
Digitech Whammy
Giga Delay (I think it's made by BOSS)

Then I would be in business.

shadow316 08-12-2005 04:29 PM

I love a nice overdrive when you put it through a wah pedal.

My pedals:

Boss ODB-3
Morley PBA-2 Wah
Zoom 506II

sk8inbassist17 08-12-2005 04:39 PM

i lovvvve pedals

i have:

Boss GEB-7 Bass EQ--------------------69.99$ USA
Boss ODB-3 Bass Overdrive-------------89.99$ USA
Boss DS-1 Guitar Distortion-------------39.99$ USA
Dunlop 105Q Bass Wah-----------------99.99$ USA

Omega Red 08-12-2005 04:43 PM

i have an effects processor with 250 diffrent effects on it, i love playing with them, but its not always called for in the situation

Aukai 08-12-2005 04:48 PM

Boss GT-6B Effects Processor, No need for another pedal :P

Same. :D

Low_End_Communications 08-12-2005 05:31 PM

I'm currently in a pedalless phase of life. I am attempting to sell my Digitech Bass Driver, Bass Chorus, Bass Synth and Morley Dual Bass Wah at the local shop in hopes of using that money to buy an American Big Muff and EBS BassIQ and eventually a Aphex Punch Factory and Sansamp Programmable BDDI.

Down'd Angel 08-12-2005 05:43 PM

i think effects for bass are great...it you are developed enough...it can expand your playing to a whole new level...

guitarist are not the only ones who can have fun with effects...even though i love the sound of a regular bass...effects always add that special ump to it...

just the draw back is that you have to know when to use them and when not to over do them... :thumb:

Worrpigs 08-12-2005 05:52 PM

^^^^^^^^
your avatar is lame.
effects are a good thing. icing on the cake. i think the only players who wouldn't want effects are in Blues cover bands.

Muggsy 08-12-2005 05:57 PM

my avatar?

The Dutchinator 08-12-2005 05:57 PM

Digitech BP200, I love it. :smash:

Thonk 08-12-2005 07:22 PM

I like using pedals. If only i wasnt so broke, or i'd have a lot more.
Digitech Original Bass Whammy (used mostly for chorus it has)
Digitech Grunge Distortion
Behringer BDI21 (sadly I think this was lost in the mail)
So as of now, I only have the two Digi pedals.

Worrpigs 08-12-2005 07:26 PM
my avatar?
i think hes reffering to mine. and truthfully i dont care if you think that my avatar is lame. and i bet bassist in blues cover bands use effects, such as compressors. and to A7X, i wasnt aware that they made a bass whammy, how much do they run for?

Low_End_Communications 08-12-2005 07:33 PM

The Digitech Bass Whammy was shortlived. They go for over $300 now.

Worrpigs 08-12-2005 07:42 PM

 that sucks, how does it sound?

Aukai 08-12-2005 07:48 PM

trippy, I have one on my processor, and I like to use it for fun, soloing and stuff. Reminds me of rage.

sixner 08-12-2005 09:01 PM

hmm... im looking to buy a digitech bass synth... a good chorus, reverbe and delay pedal.... morley dual bass, big muff Rus. boss phase.. i want alot of pedal's... I'd have a giant pedal bored if i had the money... i love effect's, they're so fun... even if i dont use them for my band.. and adding 2 or more together can = lots of fun, but over done in my opinion....

at the moment, i've got a digitech bp200 and boss ds-1... ive got a long ways to go...

-sixner

wishiwaskurt210 08-12-2005 09:27 PM

I believe you could use a guitar one but it wouldn't sound too great.

i guess if you consider a compressor an "effect".
you might bet that bassists in blues cover bands don't use effects but i know because I've seen lots of them play. Blues guys usually go for the unmolested tone from their axes, usually fenders. the older the better. as a matter of fact i saw a blues band last night and the bassist played a fender p-bass with a Trace Elliott combo. no effects just a clean ballsy bass tone that cut through and complimented the guitar perfect.
you can go ahead and disrespect the leader of my country over the interweb, but if you did that in front of me in person you would bleed.
have a nice day, sonny.

I just bought one.

I use:

-Old Ibanez Delay pedal
-Russian Big Muff, sometimes

Mr. JazzMaster 08-13-2005 12:34 AM

HAHA don't sell your bass whammy! they just go up and up in price, i heard it tracked bad.

"The day people stop questioning their leaders is the day democracy dies."

He's the leader of your country? Country before self, if he's anything, he's the leader of A country. Not yours. His actions affect far more people than you, and they have the right to their expression about it. Being president is the same thing as being disrespected, and it's been that way since the Revolution of 1800, when the parties changed power for the first time. Personally, I think his avatar's hilarious, and though I respect our president in many ways, anyone who can't create coherent sentences consistently is asking for ridicule.

As for the topic, there are thousands of blues bassists who use effects, from bass exciters to flanges to chorus. Blues is a very very expressive genre, and while some people go for the pure stuff, there is still a massive amount of people who are fans of effects. As for your live experiences, they amount to naught. It could be a trend in your area, or perhaps the bassists in question are traditional. Or it could just be a matter of when and where you saw them... sometimes I avoid using effects during gigs that require quick setup/takedown, or gigs that are in a very sterile environment when I don't have time for a soundcheck. The "cleanest" style would likely be soul and gospel.

Are you serious? That kind of attitude is exactly what America doesn't need. I have no respect for Bush, and I don't expect anyone else to simply because he happens to be President.

Wow, that is good. I hate how certain people stick up for something just because they think it's theres.

I have a Line 6 Uber Metal which I like.
Well all I have to say is I have a BP200 and it sucks.
I don't have a hick president. (Yay)

You think the BP200 sucks??? I used to own one before i got a decent amp and i found it excellent for making a basic setup sound a lot better, and a lot of the effects were really cool.

As for my effects, i own:

EH USA Big Muff
Boss ODB-3
Boss CL-10 (Half rack compressor, limiter and noise gate)
Tech 21 Sansamp Bass Driver DI
Morley Power Wah Fuzz (original 70s series)
