Aussie Artists
Recently I've been quite impressed by a couple of Australian artists, and I feel it's time to start introducing these groups to the rest of musicianforums. However, I realise I actually know very little about some of the up and coming musicians that are currently working down under, and I feel we could all do with hearing a few more Aussie artists.
So here we will use this thread to introduce great Aussie acts to each other, but, in order for this to work properly we should have some guidelines. Thread Guidlines - Please Read 1. If you are going to introduce a new artist, be sure to make it a high quality post. For example, check out one of the forums Featured Artists. These are always produced to a high standard, and if you can produce something similiar (not as in depth) to that it would be great. Also, a dodgy post will probably mean a great band will be overlooked, and you wouldn't want to risk that. 2. If a band is currently being discussed, please do not introduce a new spotlight band. As many of these groups will only be small time, it's more than likely that discussion will not continue for long periods of time. If a post goes unanswered for a day or two, please introduce your artist at this point. By doing this you will ensure each user/artist has had an oppurtunity to be recognised. 3. Do not simply list Australian bands. 4. Please be willing to share a few uploads so we all get an idea of how each group sounds. 5. If you are not an Aussie, please don't hesitate to post up something on a good Aussie act. New Zealand artists are also welcome. So, lets hope this works. :) The Red Paintings The Band: Guitar and Lead Vocals - Trash McSweeney Bass - Jasmine Ebeling Drums - Leigh Doolan Violin and Backing Vocals - Ella Stancombe Wayne Jennings - Chello The Red Paintings are a 5 piece group who have described their own sound as "Orchestrated Sci-fi Art rock", and I couldn't find a better way to describe them myself. Hailing from Brisbane, they have just release a 7 track EP entitled Walls, and a set to be making their way around the country. If you get the chance, I suggest you go and see them. I saw a free gig they did and it was great, which has left me imagining how amazing one of their actual gigs must be (They apparently have quite an interesting stage show, proving they are artists both musically and visually). Discography: Angel Flummox [EP] - Released 1999 Reality [Ahead of Schedule] [EP] - Released 2000 Cinema Love LP - Released 2002 Rain [Single] - Released 2004 Your Tears Are Warning Signs - Released 2004 Walls [EP] - Released 2005 Of all their releases, I myself only have Your Tears Are Warning Signs, which is really quite good. It's an acoustic album released with only 3 band members appearing (no Drummer or Bassist). It's different, but great at the same time. To state the obvious, it makes the Strings a lot more prominent, which reflects the mood of the music very well. From what I've heard of the other albums (they all have something available to download on the official website), everything seems to have a similiar sound. Don't be put off by that statement, although the songs are similiar, they do not become stale. I'll stop rambling now so you can give this group a listen :thumb: http://www.theredpaintings.com Uploads from Your Tears Are Warning Signs The Red Paintings - The Revolution Is Never Coming The Red Paintings - The Fall of Rome The Red Paintings - Dead Children The Red Paintings - Rain Tracks from Other Releases Past Spotlight Artists 1. Cool thread idea, I might do one a little later.
|
I'm hella busy ATM, but mabye tomorrow ill do something on the John Butler Trio or the Screaming Jets.
DVG. |
That would be great. Hopefully thats how this thread will turn out, and therefore we will all benefit from it. Did you give The Red Paintings a listen? Thoughts?
Please be aware of the 2nd guideline, or else I believe this will just become another thread where various band names are posted. We can do better than that. :) /calls dibs on Cog for the future |
This is a very good idea, I would like to help out in it, but I don't know how much time I will get to write up detailed accounts of the artists I like.
I'll try though :). |
shotgun/dibs for sunk loto
....when i get around to it |
....waits for someone to dib acdc
|
Please use the edit button. And please don't post just to call dibs. The point of this thread is to post your article when there is a slow period in the thread (at least a day or two where the previous post goes unanswered), and then let people discover and discuss.
Is anyone bothering to give The Red Paintings a listen? I'm yet to hear anyone who's heard them say they don't like them. |
I might revioew my old mates Melodyssey some time
|
This thread comes at a great time, I just bought a book for $10 called "The Who's Who of Australian Rock Music", its pretty comprehensive aswell encompassing information about death metal bands such as Astriaal , underground rock and avant-garde bands and just general rock groups, most of which I have never even heard of.

AC/DC are only partially Australian. Angus and Malcolm are Scottish (born in Glasgow I think). And we all know we think of Angus when we think AC/DC. |
^^^I'm Australian and go every weekend to see the awesome live/local scene and I can tell you a few bands worth going to check out.
- Spiderbait - Frenzal Rhomb - Dallas Crane - Blood Duster - Superjesus - Silverchair (you should know them) also try Tommy Emmanuel an awesome Aussie guitarist that blows the mind! Hope that helps! :D |
SilverChair... but they suck :)
|
Silverchair are awesome mate, I saw them at the Big Day Out and was absolutely blown away!
Try: - Israels son - Blind - Madman and - The Door |
Please read the first post!! I don't want random band names thrown into this thread.
|
Silverchair came from my highschool :D
|
The Red Paintings are fantastic from what I leeched from a Forced Listening thread and got from their website, thanks for these uploads.
I could try and do a Crowded House post but I bet everyone already knows them. /hopes this post isn't against the rules |
No 3rdplanet thats pretty much what I'm looking for. At least you mentioned the current band, and it's good to see you like them. I haven't been able to stop listening to them for the last couple of weeks, and their lyrics are really growing on me lately. Are you in Australia?
|
I could prolly do a review of Xavier Rudd if you like?
If you are Australian, and don't know who he is, check him out. |
The Red Paintings are nice people, the singer is so easy to talk to. I've seen them 4 times this year and... it seems they've become a bit of a talking point round these parts.
G_Mac's enthusiasm towards them here, with good responses. Plus three 10/10's in a row in Forced Listenings of a song of theirs... now that's a good sign. |
Yeah, I really liked what I could download off their Website, is that what all their songs are like?
|
gaslight, from what I've heard so far their songs all have that kind of feel to it. However, each song is still unique enough in my opinion to prevent it from becoming stale.
blue, I've heard they are really nice people. It may have been you that told me, but in case it wasn't, a few underage people showed up at their gig one night. Usually these kids would be turned away by security, but instead The Red Paintings came out and met them, played a song or two acoustically and then went back to their business. Now thats dedication to your fans. |
Oh, I just mean most of what I downloaded was primarily acoustic guitar and violin parts, do they often do full band style arrangements, or go into the electric guitars?
|
I'm unsure about that, but I assumed they would generally play with the full band arrangement. On You Tears Are Warning Signs they made it sound as though it was out of the ordinary for them to not have Drums/Bass, but I thought that the acoustic guitar was generally what they used. Blue should be able to clear this up for us anyway.
|
Oh, I just mean most of what I downloaded was primarily acoustic guitar and violin parts, do they often do full band style arrangements, or go into the electric guitars?
They usually do the full band thing, the songs G_Mac put up are just from an acoustic recording. Live shows sometimes are with acoustic guitar, sometimes with electric, depends where they play really, but it's mostly the full band that plays.
Also, they're on tour at the moment playing the east coast and Adelaide, so check their website if you're interested. |

Cog are a 3 piece Hard Rock group with a progressive influence, who are currently based in Bondi, Australia. Over the last two years I have really grown respect for these guys. Although they are not technically brilliant, each memeber of the band gells together very well. They seem to attract they same audience as Tool, and their live shows are where they really excel. As I'm terrible at describing music, have a look at the JV review posted by blueyxd, a link is in the Discography The Band: Guitar and Lead Vocals - Flynn Gower Drums, Samples and Backing Vocals - Lucius Borich Bass and Backing Vocals - Luke Gower A Short History: Cog first formed in 1998 before taking on the local venues along the East Australian coast. In 2001 they were eventually signed, and began work on what was to be an album entitled "Just Visiting". However, due to finacial constraints, they periodically released the two Just Visiting EP's. This, along with the release of Open Up led to quite a dedicated fan base being formed. This was consolidated over the next two years.By mid 2004 the group had begun negotiations with larger record labels, and were signed to indepentant record label, Difrnt Music. After a few false starts, the group left for the US to record their Debut Album with Sylvia Massy (Tool, SOAD, REM), which was finally released on April 12, 2005. They have since seen success here in Australia, and are looking to secure an overseas tour some time in the near future. These guys are definately worth a listen, The New Normal had me hooked in almost the same way Tool's Lateralus did when I first heard it. My mate has The New Normal. I thinks its pretty good. There seems to be something missing though, not sure what. I guess i will just have to give it more time, cos' they have potential IMO.

Great thread, Greg. I'll consider doing a few after exams are over.

Nathan Gaunt
Hes a guitarist from Perth, WA. He has won the WAMI (west australian music industry) award for best guitarist twice and he has a really good voice too. He either plays solo or with his band the Blackeyed Dogs. the band consists of Sam Gaunt - Bass Guitar Ross Warren - Piano, Keyboards Mikey Dean-Smith - Drums & Percussion he has been playing in bars around perth for about 5 years. His music is a sort of acoustic/folk/pop stuff but there are a few blues numbers and songs songs he wrote in india. His album doesn't really do him justice as a guitar player with the execption of yatra. he is amazing live and is a really nice person he has 2 albums escape + return (2004) Circledreams (2000) and a few EPs Check out his website for some song files www.nathangaunt.com.au i don't think this little peice does him justice, you really gotta check him out |

The Berzerker
Short Bio Originally a solo DJ band entitled The Berzerker, Luke Kenny inspired to mix his speedcore beats with a death metal rhythm. Backed by Earache Records, he set out to Canada to seek help from SYL's Devin Townsend. But the results did not go in Kenny's favour. He returned home to Melbourne, with barely any bond money left. So he set up a studio in his then place of residence and proceeded to record. He recruited 3 men along the way, one of which is Sam (The Bassist) to record guitars & bass. The recording process was brutal, at times spending 10 hours perfecting a single riff. Due to the brutality and lack of experience from recording the first album, when time came for the 2nd, Luke had gained more knowledge and shortcuts to produce. Nice post Experi_metal, I've been trying to look into the Berserker for a while now. I'm looking foward to hearing some of these uploads. :)
|
Anyone else got anything by The Berserker they could upload? I'd appreciate it a lot. Also, are these they same guys who have the crazy 19beats/second drummer or something? That'd be mad to see/hear.
bump :shifty: |
sorry it took so long to get the uploads up, i been in and out of the house all day
|
I might find time this weekend to do some posts for this thread :). I just need to find enough information.

No prob, thanks for supporting this thread. Will posts thoughts on Berserker soon. EDIT: The Berserker don't seem bad at all. A lot of high tempo stuff, with that DJ influence still quite prominent. I prefer the Death stuff at the moment to, and after the first listen it sounds as though they will be a band that grows on me. :thumb: EDIT #2: I just found some more Cog stuff, that isn't available for purchase. The first is a live track from early 2002, the second is a 14 minute version of their single, 'Open Up', and the third is 'Bondi', which came from the Pseudo Demo CD (recorded on an 8 track) which was limited to 200 copies. Here you go if you want it.
