Slayer

Anyone in here big Slayer fans? I am, and I felt like making a thread so all of us can discuss them. I'll start this thing off by asking, what are some of your favorite riffs from Slayer songs?

Chop Suey! 11-24-2004 07:33 PM

Angel Of Death!

ToRidTheDisease 11-24-2004 07:35 PM

I agree, that song and riff is awesome, anytime I go into a guitar shop, that's one of the things i'll play, and everyone stops and listens, even though it isn't even that hard, haha.

Slaytanicus 11-24-2004 07:44 PM

I like the tremolo bit at the end of Postmortem, The main bit in Raining Blood, the solo from Angel of Death, and that bit of riff right before the solo...

I have War at the Warfield, but not the new one. I don't think I'm gonna get it, though. His vocals in WatW were, very sadly, very bad. The years old belting out screams and yells has taken its toll on his voice. When the (attempted) the scream from Angel of Death, you know, THE scream, it hurt me to listen to it because its sooo bad. He can't hit ANY high notes now.

At ozzfest he sang awesome.

MetalNightBodomNight 11-24-2004 10:12 PM

slayer is alright i don't like them as much as i used to i would say their best work is spill the blood or south of heaven. i don't judge vocalist on live performances because singing live is hard to do, soundmen suck, and they can't use the added depth of multiple takes (mults).

I felt the same way. That ruined the dvd for me. What's weird though is that I saw them back in June and he sounded just about perfect.

Wow, you are one hard core mofo, I can tell by your user name.

ANGEL OF DEATH!!!

It's gonna get my vote in the top 100 songs poll, right after Raining Blood.

I have all Slayer albums and I am a huge fan, favorite album would be Seasons, Soth of heaven and you guessed it, REIGN IN BLOOD!

Agent_Orange 11-24-2004 11:22 PM

At dawn they sleep have some pretty eerie riffs, especially the intro.

razorblade_kiss 11-24-2004 11:25 PM

seasons in the abyss and raining blood are the best songs

blood red has an awesome solo

black magic is also good (from show no mercy)

Malakian Worshipper 11-24-2004 11:44 PM

i love Angel Of Death, coz it defines so much about the style

Cipher Hour 11-24-2004 11:54 PM

I don't care much for Kerry King but I love Jeff Hanneman, he is the man. :thumb:

i've become confused on slayer's solos when i hear a very technical solo i think it is hanneman but i look in the booklet and it is really king or vice versa. king has a horrible reputation and i'm confused about how he got it when i hear some of his solos then i hear other and say to myself (yeah, he really does suck).

Cipher Hour 11-25-2004 12:13 AM

Kerry has a history for writing really "weird" and out of place solos while Hanneman has written a lot of Slayer's best solos. King just has a reputation for being a bit of a bad songwriter I think.

MetalNightBodomNight 11-25-2004 12:15 AM

that's true, it's just all of the sudden king throws a curve ball on you and makes you ask yourself if he is really that bad. i think i'll stick with hanneman though. araya needs to fix his open e basslines to show some more chops, slayer dosen't have the most wild guitars.

Kerry just plays it and Hanneman writes all the really good riffs and solos.

storm_rider1115 11-25-2004 02:20 AM

(first post)
i would have to say AoD, Raining Blood, and Postmortem are my favorite. they get my blood running. and since we are talking about Slayer i thought i would add, IM GOING TO SEE THEM IN DEC!!!! WOO!!!! YAY FOR SOMA!!!

razorblade_kiss 11-25-2004 03:13 AM

for everybody knocking kerry king, yes i like jeff hanneman better, but nobody here can knock kerry king, cos hes better than us! he writes heaps for slayer and his solos may not always be in place with the song (although most of them are still in key!) but some of jeffs arent either, but thats the general idea of slayer. theyre not a band that has amazing perfect in key solos like a steve vai or a joe satriani. it wouldnt suit the music anyway. i doubt anyone in this forum can write a slayer style solo like kerry king can.

and by the way for the guy who said they get mixed up with whose solo is whose in the songs, in head phones kerry is on the right and jeff is on the left. you can still here the solos in both, but one is louder and better quality than the other.

'Tis my favourite.

It and Angel Of Death.

bassaholica2004 11-25-2004 03:39 AM

What turns me off from later Slayer is the lyrics. Why did they have to give King the lyric duty? Hanneman's were so much better. Compare Raining Blood to Threshold.

BLACKLABEL 11-26-2004 01:38 AM

I just picked up there new DVD, slayer owns!! My favorite songs would be Seasons in the Abyss and Angel of Death.

SLATANIC-666 11-26-2004 11:21 AM

Slayer are fvcking awesome. You wouldn't think it though looking at my username, subtitle or avatar . Anyway, the new DVD still reigning is superb, Daves drumming is as good as ever, Toms vocals, despite a few bad reviews of recent times were pretty good too, Jeffs solos were excellent as always although he did have some problems towards the end of the show but I'm sorry to continue the torrent of King bashing but his solos just didn't take form of anything on Reign in Blood, they sounded more like stuff off Diabolus and GHUA.
To name a top 5 list of Slayer songs is impossible because you really are spoiled for choice but I have phases with Slayer where I'll really be into later stuff from Divine, Diabolus and GHUA but more often I'm into the older stuff. At the moment though i'm into one song in particular which is War Ensemble, probably because I was playing it on guitar the other day but I know that in a short space of time I'll be really into some other song, Chemical Warfare say.
That's what's great about Slayer, they've got that much great material it's very hard to lose interest.

severed_heaven 11-26-2004 11:34 AM

Seasons in the abyss and raining blood are my favs, i got their live album a few weeks ago "decade of aggression" and its f'kin' awesome.
