Moseph's Audio Freeware: Table of Contents (MGWAFTNAF)
Below are links to the various articles in Moseph's Guide to Windows Audio Freeware that Nobody Asked For (MGWAFTNAF). If a Mod could sticky this thread, that would possibly help keep the articles available for those who are interested.

I agree, this needs to be stickied.
|
honestly, this needs to be stickied, or linked to in a sticky.
|
Thanks for the support. If you guys make the suggestion in the suggestion thread the mods might reconsider it. I don't think they'll take it too seriously coming from me again.
|
The Table of Contents has been edited to include a link to the LUNA Free thread.

If I wanted something for sound affects, say something in the vein of what Summoning would use, which would I want?

Reason.
Which isn't a plug-in. |

Hey, you should update this thread...REAPER's at 2.002 and kicking some serious ***. Cubase? Sonar? Pro Tools? Who needs em? :)

This thread is about freeware. REAPER 0.999 was the last freeware version. The subsequent versions were and are commercial products. |
I'd like to say Audacity 1.34 is much better than 1.26.

I don't know where you would classify this as but
I don't know where you would classify this as but
http://freemusicsoftware.org/category/free-vst/synth
That's kind of like a parallel resources to this series of threads (although including pictures is sometimes nice). I haven't written anything about VSTi synths, largely because I don't use them save for drum samplers and a few keyboard synths. I don't have a whole lot to say about synths in general though, so I left it off the list. I had seen that website before, but it's got a lot of new listings since then: I might give Trakax a whirl at some point. That one looks somewhat promising. |
I'm downloading a whole bunch of them and gonna try them out.
Now I need a Midi cable.....and I need to figure out midi interfaces, since it is a topic I have vastly ignored. |
good of you to help people :)

How can you miss ASIO4ALL, or Chainer?? ABSOLOUTLEY ESSENTIAL. The demo of Chainer is fully functional apart from saving presets but you don't need to do that if you save them within your sequencer. This program makes all synth multi-timbral under one MIDI channel...no need to open multiple instances as this keeps it all together. Check it out http://www.xlutop.com/html/chainer.html

Well, you might have a point about ASIO4ALL, though in reality that's more of a driver compatibility wrapper than audio software in the strictest sense. As for Chainer, there are actual FREE variations of the same idea available, if you check out my "Utility" VST list, you'll notice I included CTAF MultiFX. Another good one is by Acon Multimedia (also available as DX/DXi, for those who aren't using VST-operable software). |
i figured this would be a great place to post this:
http://www.dskmusic.com/blog/?page_id=3 free vst instruments that actually sound good!! some of them are cheesy but there are some in there that are freaking amazing, they're free but you can make a donation if you want to support whoever's making these amazing patches :) you can even sample them before downloading them, and they're small as hell |
I haven't been too impressed with the DSK stuff. I liked the strings one, but I had to turn the flanger off because it sounded like....a flanger effect put on recorded strings, as opposed to anything semi-realistic sounding. Wasn't too impressed with the B3 emulator, I found another one that was much better for my needs.

check out the asian and indian dreams combos, not bad, same with the piano one
|
Could you do one on compressors and noise gates (ouch, i know), please?

Check the Dynamics thread. |
Sorry, i didn't think that they would all be in one place.
Thanks! |
I'm currently using Kristal, and for being free, I think it's amazing.
But the lack of a waveform editor is quite restricting.. You wouldn't happen to know of a good free one to use as an extension for Kristal? |

But the lack of a waveform editor is quite restricting.. You wouldn't happen to know of a good free one to use as an extension for Kristal?
The two that get the most buzz in the online communities I frequent are Audacity and Wavosaur. I've actually been meaning to give Wavosaur a workout and possibly post it here as a recommendation. Precursory looks at it seem promising for the basics, though it doesn't do everything I had hoped it could. |
Checking out Wavosaur now. Looking good.. Magnificently lightweight (200 kb).
Which features does it lack? Edit: Meshes really well with Kristal.. Liking this setup a lot. Thanks again Moseph |
Checking out Wavosaur now. Looking good.. Magnificently lightweight (200 kb).
Which features does it lack?
The version that was current about a year ago was pretty good, but I felt it had a steeper learning curve than, say, Audacity or the native editor in Cubase LE or Pro Tools. A big part of that at the time was the tool integration. One thing I remember wishing Wavosaur had was a pencil tool and more discrete control of the samples at a high zoom. It's sort of esoteric, but it's really handy for cleaning up clipped drum hits and jitter-induced pops/clicks. This is not to say that Wavosaur was bad, just that it offered very little substance over Cubase LE, which was my primary DAW at the time. I actually thought it was one of the better editors I've looked at (WavePad and QuickAudio come to mind as well) I'm all for sloughing through a learning curve to use something free, but I haven't had a pragmatic reason to do so other than the artificial one of putting up a review here. |
I made a free ear trainer in flash. A video tutorial on how to use it is below the ear trainer.
http://www.trainear.com/ It's unique because it plays songs associated with the interval you missed if you miss it. |
Hey Moeseph, I don't suppose you could send a link to Numerikart Choralozoide?
I've been looking all over, but I can't find it anywhere. Thanks in advance, man. |

you can lower the volume. It's a perfect sine wave so the complex timbre of recorded instruments doesn't interfere. Flash doesn't have midi support. Recording a live piano or something could cause issues with notes being slightly off tune.

Oh awesome dude, that forum looks pretty good too.
|
Alright I added guitar and piano tones.
|
Awesome. Now it's better than the one on musictheory.net
|
Thanks for this - it'll help with getting to grips with the basics and such. =]

Moseph, you should try out the Reaper plug-ins, since they have been released as seperate VST's. I am a fan of the EQ unit, and I use the compressor for final mixdowns, since my usual compressor, the Classic, warms things up too much at that stage.

I've used them. I don't know that they were out when I wrote all these threads (if so, I certainly hadn't used them very much or I probably would've written about them). I don't like them quite as much as other alternatives for most uses, with the exception of ReaFIR, which I love for advanced noise filtering (tape hiss in particular goes away quite nicely). I've been hoping to put together something for some other software that's popped up in the past year or so, but I've been really busy lately and haven't had a whole lot of time to put things through the ringer. |
Guys, I need something like Ableton only less complicated.
|
um...
