It's not necessarily just individuals in particular but general waves. Be it particular bands or genres in general. Sure, people check out new genres and end up liking it a lot. That's fine. It's the sincerity with which they like the bands/genres that becomes a 'problem' and how long it'll last. I'm not trying to act all holier than thou by saying this guy likes them a lot more than this other guy and that for one of these guys, a year down the line, won't really care all that much for it. But I mean, in the end, it's still true.

yeah, i've talked to the dude (woe) over last.fm a couple of times, nice guy and his album is crushing
