Gandhi is not a hippy. Wash your mouth out with soap. That's like saying Martin Luther King is a hippy.

Hippies do not devote their lives to helping the well-being of their countrymen. They devote their lives to doing drugs and going to Grateful Dead shows.
I was using Gandhi as an example because his peaceful protests are an example of what a big part of being a hippie is. Anybody can take drugs and go to a concert thats NOT a hippie. What it is about is being the counter culture to as they call it "the man". Hippies were created because they didn't like what our government was doing and chose to break off from it. They did try to change things through things like protest, and some protests drew a lot of public awarness to many problems. I have no probelm to if you don't like hippies, thats your thing, but to say the are cowards who run from their problems is not true. Just because you choose to defend your belifes through peaceful protest rather then violence does not make you a coward.

BludgeonySteve 07-30-2005 02:20 PM

Hippies are all about love, maaaaaaaan. I've never met a hippy that was an *** hole (of course I only know about 4, but they're nice people who will help you out when you need it).

Illmatic 07-30-2005 02:20 PM

You're really stretching the definition here.

Martin Luther King and Gandhi chose to defend their beliefs peacefully. All hippies did was run away from society.
You're really stretching the definition here.

They created a group of protestors. Running away from society doesn't involve college kids being killed in riots on campus. The protested what they didn't believe in. They aren't cowards, they choose to protest a war they didn't support, and for good reasons.

Illmatic 07-30-2005 02:27 PM

There's a difference between protesting a war and being a bum who doesn't do anything else with their life.

Lunch 07-30-2005 02:28 PM
There's a difference between protesting a war and being a bum who doesn't do anything else with their life.
Not all hippies are bums who don't do anything. They were created to protest a war, that's where the group came from. You hate people that lie around and do nothing but smoke pot or whatever, thats fine. But that really isn't even what a hippie is.

BludgeonySteve 07-30-2005 02:32 PM

I don't see what's wrong with doing nothing with your life. It's their choice and if they don't like society, they shouldn't have to get a job, be a working shill, start a family and have to answer to other people. That's not being cowardly, they prefer that kind of lifestyle.

Illmatic 07-30-2005 02:33 PM

Then shouldn't the term--and group--have died out after the Vietnam War ended?
I don't see what's wrong with doing nothing with your life. It's their choice and if they don't like society, they shouldn't have to get a job, be a working shill, start a family and have to answer to other people.
Just like how they shouldn't not get a job and then be a burden to their friends and family.

Dr. Killgreedy 07-30-2005 02:35 PM

not to get off subject, but do you think the beatles are considered classic rock?

Walrus Gumboot 07-30-2005 02:36 PM

As far as I'm concernered, that which makes one a hippie is their taste in music and how they dress and their principles. Whether or not they have a job or get stoned all the time, or are cowards are just details
Maybe having been raised around responsible adult hippies makes me have a different point of view on the subject

Glitterati 07-30-2005 02:37 PM
not to get off subject, but do you think the beatles are considered classic rock?
Yeah, they're definitely considered classic rock. I'm a big fan.

Dr. Killgreedy 07-30-2005 02:38 PM

oh ok just wondering, personally i couldnt care for 'em.

pigonthewing82 07-30-2005 02:40 PM
Then shouldn't the term--and group--have died out after the Vietnam War ended?.
No because war has gone on since, and our government has still done things worthy of protest. It wasn't just the war they were fighting for, it was the fact that everybody has the right to live life in peace with out fear of being attacked by a bigger country, or burdened by unfair practices or laws brought on by there own government.

Illmatic 07-30-2005 02:44 PM

Well then clearly they have lost their way since then.

BludgeonySteve 07-30-2005 02:49 PM

The hippy movement started in protest of the vietnam war. Now that the war is over, some would say that they've lost their way, I don't think so though. If there's a stupid thing that the government is doing, you better believe hippies will protest it! Usually it's polution or logging or some sort of earth hurting thing that the old hippies protest now.

pigonthewing82 07-30-2005 02:50 PM
Well then clearly they have lost their way since then.
I think the they you are referring to are the people who claim they are hippies because hippie things like tie die, hackey sack, and other hippish things have become trendy. There is a huge difference between those who are doing it to be trendy and those who belive in it. Those who belive in it are the ones who still take activism against things our government does such as all the protests that went on when the war broke out, or the people in organizations such as moveon.org. I mean its true the resistance isn't as big as it was during the 60's but its still there.

Illmatic 07-30-2005 02:52 PM

See, I think the problem here is that I don't think all protestors are hippies and I don't think all hippies are protestors; clearly we are not on the same page here.

Walrus Gumboot 07-30-2005 02:56 PM

I'll bet my high school has more hippies than 98% of other public schools. There are just so many.
In fact, it is considered completely normal to play a digeridoo, guitar, ukulele or harmonica in a hallway between bells, or on occasion all four, together during study halls

Dr. Killgreedy 07-30-2005 03:05 PM

at my college there are several hippies who sit out on the benches w/ martin acoustics who are just goin at it w/ grateful dead tunes and ill sit down and bust out my ibanez electric/acoustic and play mostly steve miller songs or some jimi hendrix. i sit down and learn from them to see what their opinions are but they seem so spaced out so i just sit and jam and wonder what the hell they are on. they dont really do much for me so thats my opinion of hippies.

Broken Arrow 07-30-2005 03:28 PM

Did anyone else see the page that is completely n00bs?

Dr. Killgreedy 07-30-2005 04:06 PM

nope

What's this hippie hating I see in this thread!?!?!?

From the dictionary:

Hippie - a young person who rejects established mores. advocates nonviolence and often uses psychedelic drugs or marijuana also : a long haired uncoventionally dressed young person

Edit: Nice to see you posting again pigsonthewing82. :)

Dr. Killgreedy 07-30-2005 04:28 PM

i never said i hated them, they just don't do anything for me. so therefore i have no use for them to me ever.

See-- NOTHING about unemployment

BlackDeathMetalJazz or really ANYTHING else please- 07-30-2005 04:31 PM

I don't either. Illmatic doesn't know what he's talking about. :p

Illmatic 07-30-2005 04:37 PM

They go hand-in-hand.

Jam2Me 07-30-2005 04:40 PM

What's wrong with not having a job? If you can live off the land then more power to you. Anyone ever seen the movie Easy Rider? The hippies in the mountains that lived in camps and planted fields etc., they just chilled and farmed and that's life.

Jam2Me 07-30-2005 04:43 PM

What song(s) do you guys consider the pinnacle of Piper At The Gates Of Dawn?

BlackDeathMetalJazz or really ANYTHING else please- 07-30-2005 04:43 PM

There's only 2 hippies at my school and I count for half of them. :upset:

The problem is that there are "hippies" who do neither.
What song(s) do you guys consider the pinnacle of Piper At The Gates Of Dawn?
Insteller Overdrive is probably the most well-known. Lucifer Sam is my favorite though. Astrony Domine and Bike are probably the other highlights. The whole album is great though.

BlackDeathMetalJazz or really ANYTHING else please- 07-30-2005 04:49 PM

Not all hippies are bums. Why do you get the idea that all hippies are bums that don't have jobs??? I'm sure there's several adults who live in house and have a job who could be considered hippies.
What song(s) do you guys consider the pinnacle of Piper At The Gates Of Dawn?
Intersteller Overdrive
The Gnome
Flaming
Bike

Jam2Me 07-30-2005 04:53 PM

Interstellar Overdrive...that's 14 seconds long?

BlackDeathMetalJazz or really ANYTHING else please- 07-30-2005 04:54 PM

What?!??! No, it's more like 10 min.

I listined to the entire album on my way to the shroom feild this morning and I still can't help but think "The Gnome" is about picking shrooms.

Illmatic 07-30-2005 04:54 PM

I dunno, I guess we all just have different definitions of it.

Follow The Reaper 07-30-2005 04:54 PM

So what?'

EDIT: To the kid who said it was only 14 secondsd long.

Jam2Me 07-30-2005 04:57 PM
What?!??! No, it's more like 10 min.
Haha, the file I have on my comp is on 14 seconds long.

Could someone upload Interstellar Overdrive on YSI? That would be grand. :thumb:

I'm not gonna lie, I thoroughly enjoy the 14 seconds of what I have, but I couldn't understand you guys considering that one of the better songs on the album.

14 seconds is not enough time to develop a great song. (IMO, hopefully everyone's opinion.)

If you haven't heard the full version yet you're in for a real treat. :thumb:

I'd upload it if I could but I can't use YSI. :-/
