Helloween Mystic Prophecy Human Fortress DragonForce Cryonic Temple Wuthering Heights That's all I can think of at the moment. None are quite as orchestral as Rhapsody, though. |
Thanks alot im gonna check these bands out now:)
|
I would say Elvenking as well. Maybe some plain viking/folk metal might work for you as well.
|
Well thanks for the insight but to the person who said take a look at Slayer I know what that sounds like, I was referring to Metallica because they are the most melodic thrash band their is, I was just saying Iced Earth sounds like a more modern fantasy version of them.

They're not even thrash anymore. The post-thrash scene is more melodic than them, also. And I believe Megadeth have more melody than Metallica simply because Dave Mustaine was able to get much more accomplished musicians. |
I think Kirk Hammet is the 2nd worst metal guitarist ever (behind Kerry King) and was by no means a good musician, and Metallica had terrible solos. Despite the fact, they did use lots of harmonizing and melodic passages.

Again, that was an 80's think. How many 80's bands can you think of that didn't do that? |
Slayer, Exodus (from what I've heard), Megadeth not nearly to the extent of Metallica, Testament also not to the extent of Metallica.
My point is lyrical themes shouldn't decide that Iced Earth is Power Metal when the music has little association with it. Even saying Thrash with Power Metal influences would be better than Power Metal with Thrash influences. |

What are the hallmarks of thrash? What defines that genre? |
I just got Dream Quest - The Release, and although I'm not big on Christian metal, it's amazing. I mean, you can hardly tell their Christian anyway, because it's basically just about striving for glory through the winds of fate and all the usual power metal jazz. Great band, and they're canadian :D

Lately I've been listening to a lot of Angra. "Temple of Shadows" is sweet!
Also, what's a good starting Sonata Arctica album? |

This is one of those times when I'd love to have Dargon back. |

I'd prefer not to argue with you becuase you always seem to have loads of backup on everything and I respect you as a member of this board but I think I have a valid point here. I would say thrash is an evolution of punk brough into metal. In it's purest form it has basic powerchord riffs often with gallops or fast 16th note palm mutes, a fast punklike drum beat, and usually pretty rugged sounding vocals. Obviously many thrash bands decided to expand their horizons, Metallica going from the raw Kill Em All to a more melodic version of thrash in Master of Puppets and And Justice For All. Megadeth also took elements of melody into their music, such as the melodic intro to Good Mourning Black Friday or the arabian sounding acoustic interlude in Holy Wars. Like Iced Earth it is a combo of that original raw thrash sound combined with more melodic elements from non metal music and also bands who have fused those elements into metal before, namely Iron Maiden. |

Yes and no. Thrash bands and also some speed metal bands combined many of the key elements of metal with the visceral approach that punk had. Iced Earth may have a lot of chugging riffs, but they have the melody of a speed metal band, and the attitude and aesthetics of a power metal band. |
Megadeth>Every other thrash band ever.
Actually, I don't like their 80's stuff as much, and they really stopped being thrash with Rust in Peace and became more traditional metal. |
Just for the record, Master of Puppets and And Justice For All are both speed metal albums. Ride The Lightning was a hybrid of speed and thrash, however.
Iced Earth could possibly be speed metal with influences of both power and thrash, but I'd hesitate greatly before calling them thrash. |

You are correct tho their leads are reminiscent of speed metal and their attitude nothing but Power Metal. The riffs I think are just too important to be left out of the genre classification, and they aren't speed metal enough to really call them that. Comparing them to Bodom (instrumentally) is like two completely different bands, and Bodom (Hatebreeder era at least) is pretty much a pure combination of speed and power. |
Metallica enjoy balls.

Anyone who tries to say that Matt Barlow or Ripper suck is going to find my broadsword in their spinal column. I enjoy Metallica. The logical conclusion to this is that I must enjoy balls. However, I have eaten Kangaroo Balls, as it is considered a delicacy for tourists, and I thought I might as well see what the fuss is all about. I did not enjoy it. Hence, we must conclude that either I hate Metallica, or that Metallica do not enjoy balls. As they are around 5th on my last.fm, we must henceforth conclude that Metallica do not enjoy balls. QED Addendum: It must be said that I do not enjoy Lars' drumming, hence it can be assumed that he does enjoy balls. |

Riva you should do standup
Sabaton has their influences outside of power metal too, from the little I've heard they do have a lot of basis in speed metal. |
Sabaton has their influences outside of power metal too, from the little I've heard they do have a lot of basis in speed metal.
And yet they are still power metal. |
Yeah to a certain extent obviously, moreso than Iced Earth I'd say. Unlike Iced Earth though if I had to just pin 1 genre to them it'd be Power Metal, while in Iced Earth it's debatable whether that is the predominate genre.

What about Tarot? |

Haven't heard them. I always love a new Power Metal band tho, any suggestions? NP: Sabaton - Burn Your Crosses This has got to be the most Power Metal thing since Dragonforce  I'd never compare them to Iced Earth, besides the baritone vocals. Certainly a lot of Speed Metal going on in the riffing but it's just as Power Metal as most other Power Metal bands, much moreso that Iced Earth. |
Their most recent album, Suffer Our Pleasure.
|
Hmm speaking of Power Metal (lol well I guess it is the thread for it) I was in Borders yesterday, and to my suprise they actually have a section devoted completely to Power Metal. My guess is some crazed employee thought it would be cool. The downside tho is he wasn't smart enough to know its name, it's labeled at Progressive Metal. Either way I thought that was really cool, I picked up Touched By The Crimson King and Tyranny of Souls.
|
I can only find power metal if I look really hard in the only music store in town with any variety. And it's under ROCK/POP A-Z.
|
Tyranny isn't really PM.
But a great album. and you get to shout "BRUCE BRUCE BRUCE BRUCE!" at Your CD player, always a good thing, I find |

The big HMV on Yonge st. here has a surprisingly large amount of Power Metal for such a large store. |

It's got it's Power Metal influence but seems to be mostly Speed Metal. Roy Z can shred like a madman though. |

Yeah, he's awesome, Devil on a hog has a titanic riff. |
I haven't listened to it with undivided attention yet so I wouldn't know.
On the other hand though, most say self titled Demons & Wizards is better but I actually prefer Crimson King. |
I don't like Demons and Wizards too much, I had Crimson King and didt like it too much.
