Sweet, that guy did a really great job. It sounds awesome.

Jimmy's one of my favorite Tool songs. The atmosphere in that song is killer.

Dr. Jake Destructo 09-26-2006 11:32 PM

It has grown on me. I used to think it was just meh, but once I listened to it seperate from Intermission, I started like it a lot more. The atmospheric transfer from Intermession to Jimmy was just a stupid idea I think.

Kage 09-26-2006 11:33 PM

I'm sick of all the "transition" tracks on Aenima to be honest. I wish they weren't there, they kind of detract from it if you ask me.

misunderstood 09-26-2006 11:42 PM

Yeah, 'Jimmy' is also one of my favorite Tool songs. It's up there with 'Disposition' and 'Stinkfist'. And for some reason, I especially love the part where Maynard sings "under a dead Ohio sky"

Kage 09-26-2006 11:48 PM

I love the whole aura of mystery around the song...at least, that's what I get from it. That and Reflection are my two favorite two songs, and of course Third Eye is in there.

incubliss 09-26-2006 11:50 PM

i love in Lateralus from 7:30 onwards when Maynard doesn't actually take a breath. i don't know if anyone else has noticed that? know he doesn't actually take a breath as that's impossible, it's a production technique; but it's still really amazing.

that song will always be my favourite song ever.

Kage 09-26-2006 11:50 PM

I forgot about Lateralus. That's up there too. I agree, the whole ending section of that song is orgasmic.

misunderstood 09-26-2006 11:54 PM

^Yeah, I agree. Also, one of my top songs. 'Lateralus' was probably one of my favorite live songs when I saw the band a few years back. It was just great.

Dr. Jake Destructo 09-27-2006 12:48 AM

Jimmy gives off a very dredg-esque aura, tbh. Sure, there's still all the differences, but Jimmy's atmosphere is very akin to something off of Leitmotif...

My favorites include Lateralus, The Grudge, Rosetta Stoned, 46&2, Eulogy, and maybe Jambi...

Insipid2000 09-27-2006 02:40 AM

Dont forget about Ænema.

Yeah! That's exactly it!

:smoke:

Dr. Jake Destructo 09-27-2006 10:33 AM

I never actually thought of it that way until you described Jimmy as sound mysterious; you always say that about dredg, so I thought about it and sure enough...

Are you in class right now?
What are you doing that makes you take a ciminology class?

Anyway, I'm supposed to go over a guy I work with's house later in the week to check out his studio and jam for a bit and he's never heard Tool so he told me to suggest him some songs that could maybe be played acoustically. Any suggestions?
It's crim 101, i'm mainly taking it out of interest. I might try psychology next semester/year, any opinions on that class?

And for an coustic song, try the grudge. I was playing a show in downtown vancouver on sunday. A hobo saw my tool shirt and told me to come over. He then started to play the grudge. I was totally amazed.

That's plain gnarly!

Best vocals on a Tool song: The Grudge
Best guitar: H.
Best bass: The Pot
Best drums: Ticks & leeches

... and on the subject of acoustic Tool, Disposition with nothing but some bongoes and an acoustic guitar would be cool.

Kage 09-27-2006 03:15 PM

I've done Disposition with acoustic guitar and tablas, and that works really well.

Well, I'm a psych. major so I've taken quite a few courses on that already. Intro is pretty interesting but not nearly as detailed as advanced class, obvsiously. (I'm currently taking psych:family violence and Abnormal psych...both very cool classes). Anyway, intro psych just sort of touches on all these different theories, psychologists (Jung, Freud, etc), and what not. It's not a bad class. I'm also currently taking Criminology..pretty awesome class.

/is studying for Criminal Psychology.

I've thought about dwelving into that feild of study. Human behaviour has always been interesting to me. I guess i still have alot of time to decide. I'm only beggining my first year :P.

Haha, that is completely sick. Was it at a show or was it just like a "hey, lets get together in my basement and do this" type deal? Was/is the tabla player in Sayd?

Kage 09-27-2006 10:29 PM

My friend who plays tablas and I jam quite a bit, we haven't done any gigs perse, but we're thinking about it. He's not in Sayd (Sayd is on hiatus right now, due to everyone being at least 200 miles away from each other--college and all this), but I've been getting him to record tracks for my solo project Poordunce.

Dr. Jake Destructo 09-27-2006 10:35 PM

Oh, bummer about Sayd..Where did they all go?

With that said, the whole tabla thing is incredibly sick. Is he strictly a tabla player, or does he drum as well?

Kage 09-27-2006 10:40 PM

Singer went to Texas A&M, co-guitarist to University of Texas, drummer to some music school in California (he's incredible on the drums), and bassist to some other college. We're all spread out with little to no common ground. I'm the only one left behind here. :(

He's learning the drumset, but he has a pretty natural rhythm so he's catching on quick. But he mainly plays tablas and I believe congas.

Dr. Jake Destructo 09-27-2006 10:46 PM

I think right now, I'd rather meet a tabla/ethnic percussionist than a typical rock drummer. I'm sick of sucky drummers and drummers already in bands and drummers who only like pop punk.

Man, I hate living in a small community.

NP: Aphex Twin - Drukqs disc 1

Kage 09-27-2006 10:49 PM

There are maybe two people in my school who can play tablas, one of them is the ex-Sayd drummer who is in California now, the other is one of my good friends. So I have a monopoly on the ethnic percussion around here.

I work so match faster as a solo project than in a band setting. I've got almost a full album's worth of material already, whereas writing one song with Sayd was an excruciating process. Mind you, it was worth it.

That's why I was your only out Jake. But you had to mess everything up.

I also never got that mic....

Dr. Jake Destructo 09-27-2006 11:08 PM

Kage - Yeah, I know that feeling as well. Unfortunately, I found that I ran out of ideas a lot faster, and ended up with a lot of stuff that I look back on now as being very low quality because while it sounded good at the time, I had no one to bounce the ideas off of. That's why I am trying so hard to get some smart guys together to write stuff. Oh, and performing is probably a better high than any drug I've done. :p

Lunch - Hey...I know you have me have had our ups and our downs, but I think that I can be the bigger person and work things out. It's up to you now; follow your djembe's deepest desires. *tear*

Wtf, I'm so gay.

Oh yeah, uhhh let's talk about how Tool went through what me and Lunch went through, then wrote about it in Schism.

Lunch 09-27-2006 11:13 PM

You're right Jake

I always partially ruin this thread everytime I post in it...uhh...Schism is sweet. I love the drum part after the third chorus.

magicbus 09-27-2006 11:17 PM

Ok guys, I've been listening to Tool religiously for the past 3 weeks, and I need people to discuss it with. I just never post in here cause I hate jumping in the middle of discussions.

So what's up?

One Groovin Clown 09-28-2006 12:24 AM

We'll Tool rocks, My favourtie albums are in order, Aenima, Undertow, Lateralus 10,000 days and Opiate. Of course these are always rotating. Ever since i saw Tool live at the Vancouver show, i've wanted to see them again.
