He was a musical genius, but not in the way I believe you mean it. He wanted money, thus he wrote songs to be extremely catchy, and to bring in listeners, not to be technical beyond all reason.

I honestly don't care too much about this debate but please don't say that his music was made for money. I don't believe at any point was that the idea(Picking Steve Albini as the producer of In Utero should be enough proof).
On a more personal note, anyone that has/had the Meat Puppets as one of his favorite bands deserves to be talked about with some respect. this'll be the end of my rant.

Read the edit, I pressed the submit button on accident. And while you may not like the man for his personality(though you never knew him) at least give him and his band some credit for killing off Hair Metal. And introducing the mainstream to a whole slew of pretty cool bands.
