I want to get In The Court Of The Crimson King sometime. My friend Matt has it so I'll borrow it from him.

rippa32 01-21-2007 09:00 PM

Its friggin awesome. A friend of mine only listens to Schizoid Man from it which is bloody annoying considering the awesomeness of the rest of the album.

Riva 01-21-2007 11:11 PM

I prefer In The Wake Of Poseidon and Lark's Tongue In Aspic to In The Court Of The Crimson King.
Rick Wright wrote Us and Them. It was his last contribution, song writing wise, to the group if I remember correctly.
I knew that, damn. Oh well....Rick Wright ftw!

I can't really get into King Crimson too much. They're alright I suppose, but I'm not a huge fan of prog rock beyond Rush and Floyd, and Floyd is sort of like prog rock-lite.

I bought an Echoes tab book from Guitar Center the other day. It's got all the songs from their greatest hits album, so I'm gonna try learning them now. Only problem is I suck at guitar. They didn't have any bass tab books there so I had to settle for guitar.

:D :D :D
 ****ing jealous! Seriously, that's awesome.

And don't worry Matty, I suck at guitar also. The only Floyd I can play are songs with simple chords like Fearless, Breathe, and basically everything off The Wall and The Final Cut.

MattSharpIsCool 01-22-2007 12:54 AM

I can play some of Syd's stuff, since it's a lot easier. Other than that, about the only Floyd songs I can play on guitar are Wish You Were Here and Mother. I could probably play some others, but eh, guess I'll find out.

Apocalyptic Raids 01-22-2007 01:44 AM

I can play the rhythm to Have A Cigar and some of the Money solo, that's it.

I wanna learn Shine On You Crazy Diamond but I'm too lazy.

Jim 01-22-2007 01:55 AM

I got half way thorugh the solos in SOYCD about a year ago and gave up through laziness. I can basically improvise it now (I've improved a bit) but I still don't know it for sure.

Some of Syd's stuff is fun and easy. Lucifer Sam's fun to play :smoke:

horseypie 01-22-2007 02:47 AM

Shine on is easy...the only hard part is getting the bends to the right note...and getting enough feel into it, like Gilmour does.

rippa32 01-22-2007 07:54 AM

Anyone learnt Time? Any tips on getting the timing right at the start?

MrConeman 01-22-2007 09:41 AM
Anyone learnt Time? Any tips on getting the timing right at the start?
I learned it, it is tricky getting those first notes, open string and that. What I do is count the clock ticks, its like a metronome really, once you pay attention to the ticks it should be easy enough. :thumb:

The most fun thing I learned from Floyd is the pulse version of Comfortably Numb getting that solo down was tricky, but so entirely worth it.
On the Turning away is great to play also, and Wish you Were Here is compulsory to learn for any Floydian imo

Yield 01-22-2007 02:59 PM

I got The Wall tablature book for my birthday last year. I like playing the songs that they play on a classical nylon string guitar. Songs like Is There Anybody Out There? and Vera. To be honest, I think that Vera is and underrated song off of the album. It's pretty good if you understand who the hell Roger is talking about.

 I was reading an in depth look at The Wall and I learned this. Vera Lynn in the movie version of The Wall plays a little part in the beginning. In the very beginning at the hotel, her song The Boy That Santa Forgot is playing. Apparently that's supposed to be a little precedent to the rest of the story.

magicbus 01-22-2007 05:48 PM

I can play a lot of Floyd stuff

rippa32 01-22-2007 07:55 PM

Its funny im such a big fan but ive never bothered apart from Time. I might give Vera a go though, I love that song. And itll help my acoustic playing. Might even give Mother a go.

MattSharpIsCool 01-22-2007 08:02 PM

Is There Anybody Out There? is an awesome song. That pretty bit right at the end, good stuff.

So the classic rock station here is playing their entire music library in alphabetical order, it should take about 3 weeks or so. They just started today, so they're still on A's....I've been listening for Arnold Layne or Astronomy Domine, and I think they should be coming up soon, if they even have them.

In the guitar class that I took at school one year, I learned from this wonderful classical guitar teacher. I learned a lot of playing skills from him, technique wise. That's when I learned acoustic songs like Is there anybody out there?, Vera, and Goodbye Blue Sky. Goodbye Blue Sky is one of my favorites off the album.

Vera isn't really that hard except for the bridge right before the chords and right after Roger sings "...we would meet again, some sunny day".

Danger Bird 01-22-2007 10:32 PM

I like playing Breathe because it has the same chords as Neil Young's Down By the River, so you can drift back and forth between the two. It's really fun.

MattSharpIsCool 01-22-2007 10:33 PM

That sounds exciting.

I wish I was better at guitar, but my fingers are too fat and clumsy for those tiny frets and there's too many strings. I can solo alright on a guitar, but chords get me all befuddled.

Bass is where it's at, yo.

I'd say i'm alright at guitar and bass, but I will always prefer my bass over my guitar.

MattSharpIsCool 01-22-2007 10:45 PM

I've actually hardly played my bass lately. I've been playing a lot of guitar, and I'm slowly getting a little better I suppose.

If only air guitar counted....

Yield 01-22-2007 10:54 PM

Yeah, I kind of started both bass and guitar at the same time. I'm okay on guitar, but I never try and get better. Every so often I'll challenge myself and I'll work and I'll just get better as a result.

Riva 01-23-2007 12:16 AM

I started on guitar, went to bass, loved bass, then kind of lost time to focus on either instrument.

Jim 01-23-2007 12:32 AM

 That's shweet. The only Floyd I hear on the radio at work would be the absolute hits (of which there aren't many, am I right?) and SOYCD is always badly edited :(

I wish a station here was ballsy enough to do that.

MattSharpIsCool 01-23-2007 01:03 AM

So the night passed with no Arnold Layne or Astronomy Domine, and I am dejected. So now I'm hoping for Interstellar Overdrive or See Emily Play, but I'm pretty sure neither will be played.

The station here plays their big hits, plus a few others. I've heard Great Gig and One Of These Days and Mother. They also play On An Island every now and then. I really wish they'd play SOYCD or Echoes, although maybe it's best they dont, since they would be so heavily edited.

Jim 01-23-2007 01:11 AM

There is one station here which is pretty adventurous and I've heard them play Time, Brain Damage, Us and Them (with Any Colour You Like still attached at the end) and even SOYCD unedited (!!!) but they're not a very popular station. It's my favourite, though. Actually, they play Floyd almost daily.

Every other station just plays them in a countdown or something - or just Another Brick In the Wall pt2 :p

MattSharpIsCool 01-23-2007 01:13 AM

The station here is pretty good, it's pretty much the only station I listen to. They've got a decent variety of Floyd songs played daily, plus they play Zeppelin and Tull and Rush and Skynyrd. What more could anyone need?

Jim 01-23-2007 01:15 AM
plus they play Zeppelin and Tull and Rush and Skynyrd. What more could anyone need?
Surely Pink and Nickelback???

MattSharpIsCool 01-23-2007 01:35 AM

Haha, how could I forget them?

rippa32 01-23-2007 03:48 AM

We just recently got a station that one played Kashmir and Enter Sandman. Ok sure to you americans that might mean nothing but to me who lives in cultural wasteland Australia it means alot.

Surf 01-23-2007 07:58 AM

So I'm watching The Departed, and they used the version of comfortably numb from waters' berlin production of the wall, the one with van morrison singing.

I think it works quite well, and I like like morrison, but I'm not sure whether his voice really fits the song =/. Still, a good song nonetheless.

BurningSky 01-23-2007 08:29 AM

The only time I've heard anything of SOYCD on the radio was the day that Syd died. I called every classic rock station requesting some songs with him actually performing (anything from Piper and all of their singles), but none of them were played. I kind of laughed at how upset all of the DJs were pretending to be, but didn't have the balls to actually play his stuff...

I listen to a station that does stuff like that. Sadly, the rest of the music isn't much to my liking, so I stick to CDs and iTunes.

Bike would have been pretty cool.

Leper 01-23-2007 03:34 PM

IMO Interstellar Overdrive and Bike are two of Floyd's most overrated songs. Really...they're not that great.

MattSharpIsCool 01-23-2007 05:09 PM

I shall have to disagree. Bike is really just a pop song, which I don't think should be taken very seriously. However, it's probably my least favorite song on Piper.

Interstellar Overdrive, on the other hand, rocks.

Danger Bird 01-23-2007 05:16 PM
We just recently got a station that one played Kashmir and Enter Sandman. Ok sure to you americans that might mean nothing but to me who lives in cultural wasteland Australia it means alot.
Those are both terrible songs

I can't believe my radio station did nothing when Syd died. They're usually pretty cool, except they play Freebird and More Than a Feeling too much.

Interstellar Overdrive was mediocre on the album because it's supposed to be a long jam, but the record companies didn't go for that type of stuff back in the day. Listen to a bootleg of it, it's incredible.

rippa32 01-23-2007 09:02 PM

Back in the day? Its always been like that.

Danger Bird 01-23-2007 09:05 PM

Yeah, but in today's world of DIY recording, Pink Floyd probably would have ended up on an indie label.

MattSharpIsCool 01-23-2007 09:15 PM

After Pink Floyd established themselves, they got a lot more freedom than they did early on. Look at Echoes, SOYCD, or the entire Animals album.

Record labels felt like they were taking a huge risk (and they were) on psychedelic acts in the late 60's, so they didn't allow them to have total control. That's why Interstellar Overdrive was cut back from 20-25 minutes to 10 minutes.

And ya, if a band like Pink Floyd came out tomorrow, you probably wouldn't hear them on the radio or MTV very much.

Lunch 01-23-2007 09:23 PM

Pink Floyd wasn't exactly aiming to please record companies and the mainstream with Saucerful of Secrets, Ummagumma, or Atom Heart Mother either. On the contrary, those albums are actually less accessible than their 70's work.

Riva 01-23-2007 09:59 PM

I think Pink Floyd appearing today would either be an incredibly obscure indie band or just not exist in the form we know them as.
