Are there any prog-metal bands other than like opeth, black metal bands, and BTBAM? I'm thinking Mastodon's last album surely wasn't the first to sort of mix sludge with progressiveness and rock or whatever.

There are lots of progressive metal bands depending on what you're looking for because the term is generally pretty vague and meaningless at this point. If you're into the real melodramatic, concept album thing there's bands like Riverside (Second Life Syndrome ) and Pain of Salvation (The Perfect Element, Be). If you like Opeth, you'd love Gwynbleidd's Nostalgia. Subterreanean Masquerade have a really unique sound that I can't quite explain, but Suspended Animation Dreams is a favourite of mine. !T.O.O.H.!'s Order and Punishment is a great progressive death album if you're looking for something really quirky and technical. If you want something with a bit of wank and a melodramatic vocalist who doesn't sound like an effiminate weirdo, Symphony X might apply, as might Psychotic Waltz (Bleeding). Two of Sculptured's albums (The Spear of the Lily is Aureoled) or Embodiment) are great for something a little off kilter. Orbs' Asleep Next to Science features Dan Briggs of BTBAM and it's a pretty bizarre but still good progressive metal album. Then you can get into the pretentious stuff like maudlin of the Well (Leaving Your Body Map or Bath).
That should keep you busy for a while. |

burial hex - initiations
Burial Hex is a one-man black noise project by Wisconsin's Clay Ruby, who throws together homemade oscillators, scraps of metal, various effects and organs (presumably more of the Hammond variety than spleen and liver, but who knows?!). As dark ambient, ceremonial noise goes, this is of the very finest order, sounding genuinely unsettling and sonically adventurous, while being absolutely soaked in atmosphere - right down to the creepy artwork and packaging. Production wise, Burial Hex is a more developed and varied sounding clamour than most, from the incinerated orchestral racket of 'Will To The Chapel' through to the vicious, grunting electronic drone of '8 Pentacles', there's plenty of depth here, and even if it all gets a bit over-the-top on the trance-inducing percussion and sinister whispering games of 'River Of Los', the sheer blackness of 'Bo-II-NE' will win over even the most insatiable noise followers. Highly recommended.
|
thanks guys

okay now:
Highly Refined Pirates or Planet of Ice? |
They're pretty different. Planet of Ice is the better album but Highly Refined Pirates is probably their best "quirky" album. It's fun and there's cool tapping but it isn't as good of a listen.

Recomedations?
Lately I've been listening to a lot of Metallica, Megadeth, Iron Maiden, Slayer, Black Sabbath, Pantera, Black Label Society, Judas Priest and Ozzy Osbourne. In short I'm looking to move beyond the big names in metal and don't know where to start. Based on what I listen to now do you guys have any recomendations? Thanks!

I take it you're already familiar with Iced Earth. Their early works are up your alley. I think you might like Grand Magus (in particular Iron Will) and Mastery (Lethal Legacy). Perhaps you might also like Darkthrone's latest album, Circle the Wagons. |

you might want to move on to the more extreme genres of metal, seems you've hit a nice area of traditional/thrash metal. Try some of the heavier thrash bands (mainly from Germany) like Sodom, Destruction and Kreator. If you like those, you could likely move onto some early death metal which was very thrash based. Black metal is tough to get into as it can be very abrasive, but the big names there are Mayhem, Darkthrone and Burzum if you're interested. Alternately, you can keep exploring the sort of realm you're in now with bands like Slough Feg, Manowar, Nevermore, Mercyful Fate, Dio, Symphony X, Doomsword and Mastodon. I'd give doom metal a shot too, from the school of Black Sabbath. Bands like Candlemass, Electric Wizard and Saint Vitus should all be agreeable to you. |
