I finally got to listen to it, but I was definitly disappointed.

The intro riff sounds like Meshuggah, and while that isn't a bad thing, it's not Opeth.

The keyboards seem overdone and overly dramatic, almost like symphonic Black Metal, which again, while it's not bad isn't Opeth.

The clean vocals are weird and don't work for me.

The drums are not Lopez quality, they aren't interesting at all and are just kind of there.

It's funny because I feel the exact opposite of the guy above me.

slappindabass 06-26-2005 07:31 PM

Go to the Opeth site. www.opeth.com. It shows the track listing and everything, says its about 65 minutes long, and the release should be sometime near August and September. Definatley picking this one up, although I was disapointed with the last two. Hopefully, they can match up or at least get close to the amazing brilliance of Blackwater Park.

Deth 06-26-2005 07:41 PM

I'll be getting it the first day no question, but I can't help but feel let down by that track.

You were disappointed by D&D slappindabass?

Heh....I still think that Dam nation is one of their best, but maybe I'm a softy. ;) BTW Creeping Deth your avatar/user title is hilarious.

Damnation is an incredible album. I often listen to it while falling asleep.

This is a song I downloaded off of the Opeth forums a while ago. It's a band that one of the posters was in. The song is 20 minutes long and obviously the band has been influenced by Opeth. It's not good quality, but it's good enough.

I'm sad that this band is broken up.... it's a really good song :(

I'm pretty sure most of you will like it.

EDIT: The song is Soundsleep- The Withering Process
Someone please download this song :( It took me forever to upload on my wonderfully slow computer.

It has great parts in it. The quality is much better than the bonus mud at the end of Orchid and Morningrise, but not professional music quality either.

Slapping Penguin 06-27-2005 01:10 AM

I have been into Opeth for about 3 months know but don't know a whole lot a songs but qutie a few. THEY ARE AWSOME, they have influence my songwritting so much. Everyone of them pulls there weight, the bass has great lines, drums and guitar.

Favorite song: Godhead's Lament - This is song is soo good.

Yeh I think it's fair to say I was. Because everyone has to admit, Blackwater Park just blew you away. It was unbelievable in ways words can't even describe. Then I listened to Deliverance expecting the same thing except heavier, and it was horrible. The growling was off, the riffs were empty, there wasn't enough melody. It sounded like a standard scream-your-***-off metal band, and I can't stand that stuff; it's really immature. So that album didn't make it for me at all, but there was only one song that I liked (Fair Judgement), and that song was amazing to say the least.

****ation has its hits, but overall its a weak album and its not the type of thing you can listen to anytime. "Hope Leaves" is an awesome track, awesome vocals. There are like 3 other songs on their that I liked, but the rest just didn't click for me, and they were too folky. Not enough classic soft-side Opeth.

So overall, yes I was pretty disappointed.

Deth 06-27-2005 11:39 AM

I know BWP is incredible in everyway, but I think Deliverance is great. I think that they growling is superior to BWP actually, with each album, he seems to hone it further.

Plus, you have to remember that no matter how heavy Opeth is, it's never just heavy for heavy sake. There is always a reason behind the aggression.

I have to agree with A Fair Judgement being my favorite track though.

Yeh it's just that what always appealed to me about Opeth was their adaptability, and great display of opposite extremes, and blending the gray areas so well. When they took that away and all that was left was a bunch of screaming (and yes I was saying the riffing on Deliverance was horrible compared to the riffing on BWP), it just didn't click for me. And what's worse is the only song that I liked (A Fair Judgement) was the one that didn't even fit in with the rest of the songs, the one that didn't belong.

Deth 06-27-2005 11:50 AM

I thought that A Fair Judgement fits perfectly :-/.

Also, I think that the dark/light thing was a lot more subtle and less noticable on Deliverance, so I see where you're coming from.

Det_Nosnip 06-27-2005 11:54 AM

Well, wasn't the whole idea to basically split up their sound between 2 albums?

Personally, I think that the title track on Deliverance is awesome.

Deth 06-27-2005 11:57 AM

I like all the songs on Deliverance myself.

People that are criticizing Deliverance need to see the documentary about the making of it. I wouldn't be suprised if, given all the frustrations and subpar recording conditions involved, the band said "screw this, we aren't putting as many Ebow leads on this album. I'm sick of playing this ****."

bball_1523 06-27-2005 12:03 PM

Deliverance rules! Wreath is a great song, especially the rhythms before the solo and the solo itself. It puts on a depressing atmosphere that I cannot let go.

I think that people who critized the E-bow on BWP didn't think about what the album would be like without it.

Fuck, I do that when having to play a part/song about 5 times when we're recording. So I know a small, small, fraction of what they felt like :p

Kage 06-27-2005 12:10 PM

I owe Deliverance's title track a lot, since it's what got me into Opeth, but when I bought the album I was let down and thought the band wasn't as great as I had thought. I kind of tossed it aside and forgot about it, but when I bought BWP, I was completely blown away and realized they are amazing. Recording conditions and frustrations aside, I just think Deliverance is kind of sub-par in comparison to what Opeth can actually do.

slappindabass 06-27-2005 01:48 PM

Yeh anyway. They're going back to normal for the new album. It should be a good one.

Txus 06-27-2005 02:00 PM

The new song it's so-so for me but it will grow on me for sure.

Det_Nosnip 06-27-2005 03:21 PM

There's no such thing as "normal" for Opeth, or shouldn't be, at least.

Opeth has been a very diverse band from the start. You can't even fully define them by just 3 albums. They should be open to do whatever they want.No one should ever say "oh, they use keyboards now, thats not Opeth".With that said, this new song is different, this tells me the whole album is gonna be very different. It's gonna be very interesting to see how many people turn on them once they reach hightened popularity.

Det_Nosnip 06-27-2005 10:50 PM

Hopefully. I really would hate if they got mired down in one particular sound. Sure, they have certain elements or ideas that help define what Opeth is - progressive approach, dynamics/contrast, etc, but we don't want them confusing that with some sort of musical "formula" or cookie-cutter template for songwriting!

Alot of people seem to want them to make another Morningrise or another Blackwater Park, but that is pointless. Those albums have been done and they are brilliant. I want something new.

I really think it would be a good idea if the band decided to try another album like Morningrise. They go in a different direction on each album and with them going back to a previous album's style would be unexpected and completely different. Most bands can stick to a pretty specific genre and keep creating new and intresting songs. I don't see why Opeth couldn't do that.

A dual harmony album would not be the same as Morningrise the second time around. Just a similar style.

Nobody would want Opeth to change their sound for their fans. While I may want to hear a Morningrise II, I do not expect it to ever come unless the band decides that's where they want to go.

News has spread about that song thanks.

Listening to Night and the silent water. I think it is the best track off of Morning rise IMO.
