Thought you were learning russkie.
I'm teaching myself a little now and then, I plan on taking at least a year or two while I'm here though, we'll see.

gregulus 01-11-2011 08:25 PM

he obviously decided to take the easy way out.

psh.

Angmar 01-11-2011 08:26 PM

I couldn't have taken it if I wanted to, all the sections that fit in with my schedule had conflicts except for one that was 8:30am every day, so I decided to go with German for the time being, which is cool because I knew some already and it led to me studying in Vienna this upcoming Spring so that will be fun.

Juddybear 01-11-2011 08:27 PM

bday is on saturday, gonna be with tara all day :)

Aakon_Keetreh 01-11-2011 08:27 PM

russian is a pain i toook it for 2 weeks

Angmar 01-11-2011 08:30 PM

It's not that bad, just gotta get used to the alphabet.

I've found even some German and Russian vocab is similar, like the word for potato in German is Kartoffel and the word in Russian is Kartoshka.

Tyler 01-11-2011 08:30 PM

two whole weeks whoa

Deth 01-11-2011 08:32 PM

doubt I'll ever learn another language, I'm miserable at it

russian has a lot of words that are similar to english words, too. vocabulary isn't the problem, though. it's grammar and pronunciation that are killers.

the russian alphabet is easy. you can easily learn it in a week tops.

Aakon_Keetreh 01-11-2011 08:35 PM
two whole weeks whoa
i took arabic for a whole semester

i hate languages

Angmar 01-11-2011 08:35 PM

Yeah I have found that grammar is definitely the killer, same with German though, just not to the same degree.

Tyler 01-11-2011 08:37 PM

I took French for 12 years and grammar's what made me cut it loose. I can still speak it though, just don't ask me to conjugate things in the Subjonctif tense.

gregulus 01-11-2011 08:38 PM

how learning the russian language goes:

1) learn a ton of grammatical/pronunciation rules

2) learn that half of the words don't follow those rules

3) try to say something in russian to a russian speaker and embarrass yourself

4) quit speaking russian with russian speakers

Angmar 01-11-2011 08:39 PM

Apparently the German course I'll be taking in Austria is 3 hours a day and no English is spoken, and it's like classes of 8 people. From the sounds of it though there's like zero homework so it shouldn't bee too awful, and it'll probably vastly improve my skills.

looool tell me about it

like if I mention I've learned a little they always want me to speak it with them and I pretty much decline

RouteOne 01-11-2011 08:40 PM

I know some Spanish. Such an easy language to learn.

I used to talk to my grandfather in German when I was little, but after he died it dropped off and I hardly remember any. :<

Deth 01-11-2011 08:41 PM

so glad I didn't have to take a language class in college, they seem to be the most time consuming classes for my friends

but they do have bs majors and whine about anything so

nah there are tons now but their posts are hidden, new users have to have their first bunch of posts approved before they show up to the entire userbase

luckily most of them seem to try and post directly into the various "ask the mods" threads
