What is the meaning of 'The Memory Remains'.
what is this song representing?

• The Memory Remains (Hetfield/Ulrich) This song was the first song which was ever played live from the "ReLoad" album before the album was actually released. It was also the first single release of the "ReLoad" album. Album: Re-Load The song live: The song "The Memory Remains" had its first live appearance as a jam version in Deer Creek Field in Noblesville, Indiana at 2nd july '96 - one year before ReLoad has been released. And the song has been only once played live with Marianne Faithfull - in New York City, Saturday Night Live at 6th december '97. The contributed voice: It is Marianne Faithfull who sings the "nanana"- part - she also appears in the video. The dialogue at the song's end: They were chosen by Marianne Faithfull who wanted to add parts of her favorite movie one-liners to the feel of the song. The line "Say yes. At least say hello." is from Marilyn Monroe's movie "The Misfits". The inspiration: It is supposed that the song is based upon a movie called "Sunset Boulevard". The movie is about a has-been celebrity who - after fell into oblivion - lost her mind and still thinks she is famous. The video: The band shot the video to the "Memory remains" video in LA, actually at the Van Nuys airport on 20 and 21 October '97. It costed $400.000.00 and featured the band it a huge box that costed over $100.000.00. The video had it's world premiere on MTV's Mattrock show the 15th of November 1997. The subject matter: It is about a person who tries to keep living in his glory days and in that way she becomes isolated from reality.
courtesy of AllMetallica.com |
Hmm that's intresting...I can swear I've heard/seen a live version
where kirks sings the na na nana nana na na na...er what ever |
Wow, I never thought of the song like that but now that I think of the lyrics it does make sense.
|
Ash to ash dust to dust fade to black!
Hmm that's intresting...I can swear I've heard/seen a live version

it was....when it says the only played it live once with marianne faithfull, it means they only played it once with HER, they have played it at other times without her, like on the s&m dvd.

SNL, I believe. Edit: Now I see it was previously mentioned... "And the song has been only once played live with Marianne Faithfull - in New York City, Saturday Night Live - December 6, 1997." |
What is the meaning of 'The Memory Remains'.
what is this song representing?
I've also heard that part of it had to do with the time that James burnt himself with the pyrotechnics. And can't the band play on? Just listen, they play my song That has to do with when James couldn't play when he was injured. Ash to ash Dust to dust Fade to black Fade to Black being the song that the pyrotechnics malfunctioned on. This wasn't my interpretation, but it makes sense. Theme doesn't really follow through the whole song though. |
When did they play it with her? It's a little weird her voice...
yeah her voice is quite odd, but i like the effect it has on the song |
What exactly happened when the pyro tech's went all crazy on James?
|
Does anybody know when a new Metallica album will be coming out?
|
We've been speculating around 2006 early '07. And during Fade to Black there was a pyro misunderstanding and right as one was about to explode james walked right on top of it.
|
****, I was hoping sooner than that. Has Metallica said anything about what it will sound like and will there be any solos etc... .
|
i haven't heard them talk about it...
|
So how did your gig go man?
How was the crowd's response?
The crowd loved it, didn't notice any of the slips except the one in the rainbow solo. I wasn't nervous at all, I just kept forgetting parts. |
