What is useless is taking Spanish if you have no intent of traveling to a Spanish speaking country or working in a community where being bilingual in Spanish actually matters. Sure, it may be more reasonable for more people than Swedish, but for some, learning a more popular language is irrelevant.

It's intriguing how different languages can spark different people's interest. I would never want to learn German, but Norwegian appealed to me in a big way. Part of it is the cultural associations and my kvlt heritage, haha. I also like really sing songy languages for some reason. Italian, **** yes, French not really.

i taught myself latin and ancient greek in high school, and started learning arabic my freshman year

I lived with a Norwegian last semester and two of my best friends and an ex were majors (well, double majors in something else that will actually get them $) so it was awesome having people to actually converse with. It's not like getting immersed, but it's better than only hearing/studying it for like 3-5 hours a week.
