Alcest is shoegaze.

Jaundice 02-10-2010 10:39 PM

loooool somebody called it dream pop

witchxrapist 02-10-2010 10:47 PM

Those kids are so dumb.

Meatplow 02-10-2010 10:51 PM

dream pop and shoegaze sort of overlap to the point one or the other is not really all that distinctive

witchxrapist 02-10-2010 10:54 PM

Regardless, Alcest is black metal with the slightest shoegaze influence lol.

TimJim 02-10-2010 10:55 PM

i posted siding with you mappy

i wub you sooo much
Regardless, Alcest is black metal with the slightest shoegaze influence lol.
Well, calling Souvenirs D'un Autre Monde dream pop sounds a bit awkward.

Still, idk if the shoegaze influence is taking a significant backseat there. What is really all that black metal about it, disregarding it in context of the guys previous work? I hear some pummeling double kickers on occasion and distorted tremelo picked riffs, but these sound incredibly unobtrusive in comparison to traditional BM.

on a related note
Karl, you're getting mixed up. There might be elements in the music which hint towards black metal but this album is not in any way a black metal record - to call it that or to make expectations of it thinking it's black metal is wrong. It's like criticising Panopticon's Collapse for being a bad folk album. The album certainly doesn't intend to be black metal, and it doesn't off as black metal, so to approach it with an assumption of it being somehow connected to black metal, other than the artists' background, won't get you anywhere. There are of course now connections between shoegaze and black metal - you could possibly put this in that category, but this is a shoegaze record through and through. Just having tremolo picked guitar lines does not make this black metal.

Also don't listen to TRMshadow because he has proven constantly that he's a retard.
Jaundice 02-10-2010 11:09 PM

black metal seems to have the vaguest definition of every sub-genre of metal, by a very long shot

masscows 02-10-2010 11:12 PM

it's definitely metal

the drumming and some of the melodies in spots are pretty black metal

but like, i don't see how you can say the record itself is "definitely bm"

Carl Sagan 02-10-2010 11:15 PM

trolling sputnik is easy

LeMonotreme 02-11-2010 01:50 AM

Alcest has many black metal elements, and some shoegaze, and a little post-rock. It's definitely a metal artist, but trying to define its sound is just useless. Neige is a genius, ad that's the only tag i have for him.

rasputin 02-11-2010 05:20 AM

it's stupid to call alcest only black metal or only shoegaze, they share elements of both. it's certainly not black metal with a tiny bit of shoegaze though, it's far more pronounced than that.

and there is a slight yet significant distinction between shoegaze and dream pop, mainly revolving around the 'pop' part of the label. but yeah, roflmao at anyone who thinks alcest is dream pop.

Nostalgia 02-11-2010 10:54 AM

Niege never does the same album twice, really. I don't know why you guys are trying to put Alcest in a genre when he's never stuck to one sound to begin with.

Silenius 02-11-2010 02:46 PM

Alcest (the full length mind you) is full of shoegazing.

RetiredAt21 02-11-2010 03:21 PM

First Alcest demo is elite. Is his newer stuff black metal at all?

Txus 02-11-2010 03:30 PM

Hmmm, a little bit. More Shoegaze than anything tbh.

Anglachel 02-11-2010 03:31 PM

Theres still bm there. It does make more sense to call it shoegaze primarily but dont tell the morons on sputnik i said that.

RetiredAt21 02-11-2010 03:31 PM
There's barely any shoegaze in Alcest's sound, you niggas be triflin.
maybe not in the traditional sense since Neige says he hadn't heard MBV or other classic shoegaze bands before writing Souvenirs, but I feel more comfortable calling it shoegaze than anything else.

witchxrapist 02-11-2010 06:50 PM

I prefer to call it hipster fairy black metal idk.

Anglachel 02-11-2010 07:45 PM
