The Great Decay 08-08-2006 11:25 PM

I just saw Sonic Youth in an amazingly small venue, and they played three encores.
^Same here. Making the text's/boxes' colors in synch with album covers' is just ridiculous.
I don't understand what you're talking about.

EDIT: Nevermind, I see what you're on about. I wouldn't say it's ridiculous, but it doesn't work too well.

asdf 08-08-2006 11:40 PM

Oh man, I haven't visited a single college yet. I'm so worried. :(

asdf 08-08-2006 11:48 PM

Yeah, but I've allready been worrying about it today.

The only college that has really grabbed my attention in the slightest is Western Michigan University. And even then... no.

The Great Decay 08-08-2006 11:55 PM

Word to not being done Highschool yet.

It's somewhat neat I guess? But it really does hurt the eyes after a while. That, or I've been a ruler away from the monitor 6 hours straight.

Good night everyone

WHOOOOOOOOOOOOOO.

I go to Western. If you have any hopes or dreams, don't come here.

Damn it. Now I'm back to sqare one.

I'm not even kidding, which is the sad part :(

I'm being really down on myself today. Anyone have anything that can cheer me up?

PinkFreud 08-09-2006 12:12 AM

Nah, I mean, it really depends on what you want to study. It's a great atmosphere and very "home-y" for lack of a better word. Lot's of great people, probably the nicest community I visited out of U of M, MSU, CMU, and GVSU. I just don't think much of it's education. I often call it the school for underachievers. Anyway, what are you planning on going into.

You live in Michigan?

I'm not too sure what I'm planning on doing. I'm really interested in art, particularly graphic design at this point, but I don't want to go to just an art school, because there's so much more to know. I'm also pretty interested in Psychology.

Yep, I live in Michigan. Grand Rapids. But I do not plan on going to any GR colleges.

My brother is going to U of M, but my grades and ACT/SAT scores do not reach their standards by any means.

PinkFreud 08-09-2006 12:51 AM

Western's art program isn't accepting any more new students. It's pretty assed out that they're closing it but they are.

Maybe Eastern? Good school. Good people. And I know you said no GR schools but Grand Valley State has a very good psychology program. My friend's in it right now. Western's a fair all around school and I can almost guarantee that you'll feel at ease in terms of social stuff. Especially if you drink, do drugs, and smoke cigarettes. Cigarette smoking are pretty much the main social activity here. Maybe go here for a while to figure out what you want to do and then transfer or go somewhere for grad school?

Anything but Northern. So cold. So far away.

I live in Farmington.
If I want to get into Motown, are there any specific records or (preferably) compilations I should pick up?
There was a pretty good Motown singles boxset that came out in the last couple years. That's kinda jumping in the deep-end price-wise, though. The "Ultimate" series of collections are probably the newest, cheapest most readily available sets for the big names (Marvin Gaye, Smokey Robinson & the Miracles, the Supremes, Four Tops, Temptations, Martha Reeves and the Vandellas, Jackson 5 etc.) These usually cover all the 60's-early 70's singles and hits, but some might be career spanning things. I have an older collection for the Temptations that's just called Anthology. That one's ok, I guess, too.

There are bigger, more complete collections for a lot of these artists but they're generally for die-hards. The only artist who's 60's stuff isn't really covered on the "Ultimates" series is Stevie Wonder, I think. I might be wrong, though. As a starting point, I might suggest the Four Tops or Smokey and the Miracles. But there are a lot of great songs spread out amongst the bunch of them. Like I said, they're all pretty easy to find; I always see copies of these things in the used bins.

Whole albums from the 60's are usually too tough to find and not really worth the trouble unless you're a collector. There are a lot of good Motown albums from the 70's though, especially from Gaye, Stevie Wonder and Smokey Robinson.

asdf 08-09-2006 01:03 AM

Yeah, definitely not northern.

All the people around me keep telling me not to go to Eastern. I'm not sure why. It'd be nice though, because I'd be close to Detroit and Ann Harbor.

PinkFreud 08-09-2006 01:05 AM

You don't really want to be close to Detroit, do you? Haha. I mean, they have shows there.

But they also have murders there. Hmmm.

Anyway, hope I helped a little.

PinkFreud 08-09-2006 01:39 AM

I prefer Calexico's version.

The Damned do a pretty darn good job of it too.

And when I'm feeling down, I watch a really funny movie. Not intelligence-insulting "funny", but actually funny funny.

PinkFreud 08-09-2006 02:04 AM

Gethsemane from Jesus Christ Superstar sung by Ian Gillan of Deep Purple/Black Sabbath fame?

Zappa 08-09-2006 03:20 AM

My dad teaches at Northern.

ATM 08-09-2006 07:53 AM

What's he teach? I picture your dad being a mad scientist for some reason.

nutty_bar 08-09-2006 11:05 AM

Northern in Illinois? I saw a Disney movie about that place a long time ago...

PinkFreud 08-09-2006 11:08 AM

I believe he meant Northern Michigan.

I'm pretty much in the same situation as you, cept replace graphic design with audio engineering. I found this college that interests me called Columbia College Chicago where they have recording engineering and also normal classes like psychology, english and such that I could minor in, whereas other schools that have AE have only art classes or its a school just for audio stuff. It's still considered an "art college" but whatever, I think I'm going to apply.

Kyle 08-09-2006 11:31 AM

Is it just me or do the forums look kinda different? I can;t put my finger on what has exactly changed though.

edit: On second thoughts, I don't think it has changed at all.

I thought that as well but I just figured I was going crazy. The thread titles look kinda bare or something.

Awesome. I'm looking on their site right now, it looks so exciting.

asdf 08-09-2006 01:28 PM

For a school in Chicago I was looking into DePaul. It sounds pretty good, but it's kind of Catholic, and I'm just not in any kind of state of mind to go back to catholic school.

I'll look into columbia, but chances are, it's out of my price range and/or my grades will not allow me to go there.
