There's not really a need to sticky it. We've Kept it alive for, well a looooooong time.
|
They should sticky this thread. :D :p
what do you mean sticky and why? |
were in like, almost fourty thousand posts.
|
well, you have to look at it this way. 1) you have to start somewhere 2) how do you think the teachers did it?
I used to have a teacher. I took lessons for a while, then got to the point where I could teach myself new stuff as well as he could (this is what he said, not me btw). But there are still other teachers that can teach me things better than I could teach them to myself and I'd love to have that experience again. Even as a world renown drummer I would still look to other drummers to help me, just by that point it becomes more of an exchanging partnership than a teacher student relationship. |
what do you mean sticky and why?
A sticky makes the thread stay at the top of page 1. |
I want lessons, but just don't have the time. I've done quite well off for 3 or 4 years by myself. I can play just about anything I attempt at this point, but there are always things I can learn.
And no this thread should not be stickied because it has survived for this long and there is no need. It would just ruin it. |
true, so very true my man, see, drummers and guitarists can get along, we arent so very different are we? It sounds like to me that your teacher probably wasnt skilled enough to teach any more than what he taught you.( I know this because I did the same thing 6 years ago.)

*is confused about the drummers/guitarists comment* Yes that's exactly it. He was a young teacher, and although he could have taught me more it wasn't worth it because I could have taught it to myself just as easily. However I'm sure an older more experienced teacher would still be able to teach me alot. |

My dad and grandpa play drums. My dads pretty good he just recorded an album for his band. My grandpa is in the polka hall of fame for drums. I don't know if thats a good or a bad thing. I tried drums for a while, but then I got into guitar. I started off just wanting to play some Blink 182 songs, and playing drums buy themselves wasn't cuttin it for me. I still can play though. I just got way into guitar. |

That's cool. at the grandpa in the polka hall of fame. Ya, when I started I was pretty serious about drums. I joined this site before I had a kit or anything and I constantly researched the subject. I saved every penny for a good six months then caught an awesome deal on a used kit. I had already bought some books (which I think was smarter than just trying to learn songs) and started taking lessons within a few months. I've taken a much more relaxed approach to piano though. I took one lesson when i was 6 or so, but quit because I thought I wasn't good enough. Then in grade 9 as a percussionist I had to play the bells. I'd practice the bell parts on my piano. But I never really liked them that much so it only really served me by giving me some ability when i started trying to play songs. Probably about a year ago my neighbour played clocks for me on the piano. Since I liked the song I asked if I could borrow the music. I borrowed it and learned to play the intro and I learned the notes for the vocals. As time went by I learned a few more things on piano. Another percussionist taught me the blues scales and I played some (admittedly very basic) blues. Another friend taught me the intro to a Ray charles song. I learned part of the four seasons. I also learned how to do alot more with clocks and became quite good at playing it and fooling around with it. I also started fooling around and making some of my own stuff up. Then a few weeks ago I found a few piano tabs and have been trying to teach myself some songs. |
I want to play drums.. I play guitar right now and I took lessons for a few months last year
drums are great. They're expensive though. |
yeah, but then he'll point you in vinnie colaiuta and dave weckl's direction.
Or at least he would if they were better than gadd.. ;) |
Or at least he would if they were better than gadd.. ;)
they are better than gadd, and drums are expensive, but last long ;) (guitar strings, amplifiers, cords, picks, pedals, tuners, etc.) |
Actually I'm pretty sure my mates' guitar teacher would have no contest as the best guitarist in the city.
|

(guitar strings, amplifiers, cords, picks, pedals, tuners, etc.)
 no they're not. and for the record (heads, sticks, cymbals, snares, mics, stands, cases, tuners, drum pads, various sets for various styles, etc.) |
Ive always wanted a drum set but theres no room in my house :(
I should probably worry about getting good at guitar.. |
Actually I'm pretty sure my mates' guitar teacher would have no contest as the best guitarist in the city.
Maybe I will ask what he thinks. And I think you're wrong about there always being a better one. |
Well then eventually there has to be a best amirite?
btw 8000 posts yesterday.
my thoughts exactly. |
Well then eventually there has to be a best amirite?
btw 8000 posts yesterday.
It is a never ending thing. there is some guy that noone knows about that stays in his house all the time and plays and doesnt even go outside. then he knows a better guitarist. |

it defies logic for there always to be someone better. There are a finite number of musicians, there can't be an infinite number of better ones. |
what I am saying is there is ALWAYS someone to bring you down. I have been playing guitar over 10 years now and I met a guy today that has been playing for 8 mos. and is already better than me.
|
Taj Mahal...listen to
|
Did you guys listen to my music on my website?
|
I'm into No Doy right now. Good album.
Quit talking about other things than Classic Rock. Okay. |

And what I'm saying is there isn't always someone better than you. It's just that there's only 1 best and there are millions upon millions who aren't so it seems like you can never be the best. ANd no I haven't listened yet, I'm going to bed soon. |
I'm into No Doy right now. Good album.

Listen to it before you go to bed please. I would like some feedback for it. If you dont mind.
and you are right i did carry that on about someoone being better too much but I am pissed about that guy I met today. |
Do you have a set?
No.. I'd like to have one though.
|
Okay. The piano and strings are good. The drums and guitar aren't my style though. I'm not a very metal kind of guy. It was rather short but there's nothing wrong with that.
|
No.. I'd like to have one though.
So I guess that is the only thing holding you back, right? |
