Could anyone recommend some metal bands that are strongly progressive like Opeth, OR have the dark atmospheric styles of Tiamat?

Yes Rush Queen Floyd Volta And an ELO album or two.[/QUOTE] As stated try Porcupine Tree and King Crimson. Also try Ozric Tentacles, Genesis and Frank Zappa to a certain extent. If you don't mind heavier stuff then Dream Theater and Symphony X are worth checking out. |
Also check out some Vanden Plas and Stride, you'll like them.

kalmah and norther are common suggestions. Shadows Fall are like late melodic death (ala late arch enemy and late in flames) with breakdowns and clean parts. |

Well that could cover all kinds of different genres, if "melodic" is going to be your only linking word. Could you give an example of a band that plays the kind of thing you're thinking of?
