I know I said Black Sabbath was the first metal band but I really like Deep Purple, who were around before Black Sabbath.

Do you guys think Deep Purple is metal.

BludgeonySteve 07-10-2005 04:17 PM

That was all the building blocks of metal. It's hard to call Cream pure metal.

lunch998 07-10-2005 04:19 PM
That was all the building blocks of metal. It's hard to call Cream pure metal.
I said that Cream were the first metal band to some extents. Meaning that yes, they were basically building blocks.

BludgeonySteve 07-10-2005 04:22 PM

Ok, but the first real metal band was most likely Black Sabbath. Atleast that's what is widely accepted. Some people will try to say Deep Purple but they're more like Cream.

angusmaster 07-10-2005 04:40 PM

I look at Zeppelin as a Metal buildin block , they were one of the best. Yes , i am a newbie, but im gonna be in a lot of stuff from now on.

Well now this is amazing. A noob who actually didn't reply to the first page. Congrats

unless you are not a noob.

Jam2Me 07-10-2005 04:46 PM
They were more hard rock than metal. A big part of metal is in the lyrics, black sabbath had that, but not Cream.
Are you saying Metal has different style of lyrics or deeper/more complex (basically better but that's not the right word) lyrics?

EDIT: I was practically in tears today listening to Bohemian Rhapsody...I've known what the song was about and everything, then it just kinda hit me how Freddie was basically writing a song about how he was going to die, leaving his mother, apologizing for what he did and all this terrible stuff. I guess you know you're a classic rock fan when The Notebook doesn't even nibble on my sad emotions, but Queen songs can make me cry.

EDITē: I know this song isn't about AIDs and all that jazz, but it really seems this song is either hinting to AIDs or about someone who has it etc. Anyone have any knowledge on this mystery of a song. When discussing songs with no meanings: Bohemian Rhapsody" > "Stairway to Heaven" Both great songs...Although Zeppelin fans don't really like Stairway (that always stumps me) it is one of the great songs of the time.

angusmaster 07-10-2005 05:15 PM

Jam2me , i dont know a single Zeppelin Fan (including myself)that dont like stairway to heaven , it might just be that my friends are around me alot and i listen to it all the time (they are the only Zeppelin fans i know personally)and they picked it up from me.

RockAndRoll 07-10-2005 05:16 PM
Clapton didn't really. He was more of a basic blues guitarist until the mid 70s.
Clapton started with the wah. Jimi heard clapton doing the wah, and loved and used it in his own stuff, however cream's album was delayed in being released so everyone ended up hearing hendrix do it first and it became "his thing" instead of clapton's, who really deserves more credit for it than he gets.

RockAndRoll 07-10-2005 05:18 PM

most of those points are meaningless and wrong anyways, to attribute those things to anyone one person/group is dumb.

BludgeonySteve 07-10-2005 05:27 PM
Are you saying Metal has different style of lyrics or deeper/more complex (basically better but that's not the right word) lyrics?

.
No, definitly not. Rock tends to me about love, good times, wateva. Metal tends to be about killing things, things killing other things, anger and such.

Can't say that about Cream.

edit: exept for powermetal which is about fantasy.

lunch998 07-10-2005 05:28 PM

Tales of Brave Ulysses = Future power metal lyrics.

I always thought it was Jimi who first played with it, then Clapton liked the idea and used it on his album?

Oh well.

/waits for Slowhand to show up and amaze us all with his vast knowledge of Clapton and George Harrison.

Edit:
I read somewhere that Sabbath and Zeppelin were considered two of the first rock/metal bands.
I read that somewhere too, maybe because they're the most popular? I'm not quite positive.

BludgeonySteve 07-10-2005 05:35 PM

Well wherever wah guitar came from, it's unimportant.

Thats about what i think.

BludgeonySteve 07-10-2005 05:37 PM

Led Zeppelin is far from metal. Black Sabbath is metal though. Keep in mind that when zeppelin were just starting, nobody knew about black sabbath. Sabbath got big in the 70s.
I always thought it was Jimi who first played with it, then Clapton liked the idea and used it on his album?
I thought it was what RockandRoll said, because I know the release of Disraeli Gears got delayed.

angusmaster 07-10-2005 05:39 PM

Zeppelin might not be metal , but they were definitely a buiding block. In my opinion.

BludgeonySteve 07-10-2005 05:40 PM

Indeed they were.

That's why it says rock/metal bands ;)

I've always wondered why Zeppelin are confused as metal even though they were more blues than metal.

Randy Jackson 07-10-2005 05:41 PM

dawg theres nothing more classic than Journey.

lunch998 07-10-2005 05:41 PM

They aren't metal now, but they were described as metal by the time they released LZ II.

Can't forget their folk songs. Plus The Rain Song and others. What the hell? Grr Heavy metal  indeed

This is the first time a crappy post spawned a decent discussion.

RockAndRoll 07-10-2005 05:46 PM
No they are not. Why would you say that? It's true that you can't pinpoint ONE band that started certain attributes to rock music, but it's also true that you can pinpoint many. It's not "wrong" or "meaningless" to do that. It's just discussion.

I read somewhere that Sabbath and Zeppelin were considered two of the first rock/metal bands.
It's meaningless because you're acting as if genres had clear and definitive lines that could be crossed by one person without influences by others completely over their own creative genius. When in reality genres are general categorizations with blurry lines that are created by the complex interactions of society technology and culture which are slowly changed over time and are heavily influenced by many many people.

No, hendrix heard the wah from (off of brave ulysses I think) Loved the idea and used it, but because of the timing of such events hendrix's wah actually came out before cream's wah stuff and so hendrix usually gets all the credit.

Is it the crappy post i put about Zeppelin being Building blocks , if it is , im a newbie and already did a first.

RockAndRoll 07-10-2005 05:51 PM

There are a few Zeppelin songs I've heard people today describe as metal (Achilles last stand) but I wouldn't call them a metal band.

People have described Achilles Last Stand as metal?

I guess it's because of the riffage and the fast beat, perhaps?

Edit: We should move the Zeppelin talk to the Zeppelin thread before 'Poon gets pissy at us and forces us to download more country-rock. :p

I'll agree with that. I'd also say Immigrant Song.

Hendrix started using the wah after he heard it in a Frank Zappa song.

Lunch 07-10-2005 06:01 PM

Communication Breakdown and Out on the Tiles are metal-ish also.

Edit: Hey I got my Merge, and so did Malcom. Drinks all around.

Actaully i don't think that Clapton really used wah, he just figured out how to distort by using on amp to pre-amp the signal then use another to amp it, kinda like the pre-amp, master-vol knobs on todays amp. I'm pretty sure Jimi either was the first to use wah or picked up the idea from somone other then Clapton.
