I love that intro.

Maynard could've sung that song better, though.

Still great.

Sleeper 05-08-2006 08:04 PM

This is Maynard's best performance on any Tool album by far IMO.

Darkness 05-08-2006 08:05 PM

I thought Lateralus was better in terms of vocals...

WAK (while killing) 05-08-2006 08:05 PM

The worst part about that album, (it's still not that big of a deal though) is the order of the songs. This album definatley did not flow as well as Lateralus, or even ÆNIMA. It's not that deep of a downside though, all the songs rock.

WAK (while killing) 05-08-2006 08:06 PM

I think Maynard playing with A Perfect Circle helped his vocal ability.
I don't know about anyone else, but Jambi has really grown on me.
Jambi rocks. A great, complex example of 9/8 time. Adam's opening guitar line is balls out demonic. Then when Maynard comes in the first two lines of lyrics, it's BAM orgasm.

I've also noticed that Right In Two is getting a lot of attention, but I personally think it's a little flawed. It's nice, but it's really the heavy section that makes the song awesome. I wish it stayed heavy instead of just going back to the ballad-ish chorus for a third time and ending rather weakly.

I'm loving the whole album though. The Wings suite is f*cking unbelievable. The first singing in Wings For Marie is absolutely haunting:

You believed in moments not conceived
You believed in me
Syncratic 05-08-2006 08:08 PM

Maynard's best performance on the album would have to be either '10,000 Days' or 'Right in Two.'

Nah! The quiet part in 'Right in Two' is the best part....the heaviness kinda ruined it.

Sleeper 05-08-2006 08:08 PM
I thought Lateralus was better in terms of vocals...
This is really debatable, Lateralus has it's strong points when it comes to vocals such as Ticks and Leeches and The Grudge.

What makes Jambi for me is the bass solo and the ending.

deadohiosky9 05-08-2006 08:08 PM

Jambi is f'ucking awesome.

Lateralus has its moments but all around I believe 10,000 Days has his better vocal performance.

BlindWriting 05-08-2006 08:09 PM

I don't know, I think my favorite Maynard album in terms of vocals would have to be Thirteenth Step. Then Lateralus.

I don't want to whore the vocal opening of The Pot, but that down right makes the album for me vocally.

WAK (while killing) 05-08-2006 08:13 PM

If any of you wasted your money on eMotive then theres a good chance you heard one of two good songs on that album, Fiddle and the Drum. That song is a perfect example of good Maynard vocals.

That fretless bass riff in the beggining of Wings for Marie is intense! (listening to it now)

Sleeper 05-08-2006 08:14 PM

I enjoyed Emotive, but lets not get into that.

BlindWriting 05-08-2006 08:17 PM

Justin's work on this whole album is great. He's got quite a few shining moments (The Pot, Jambi, parts of Wings/10,000 Days) but overall he's just incredible.

Danny's work is definitely less tribal this time around. I noticed he doesn't have too many HOLYSH*TOMFGWOW moments like he did on the Grudge, or the opening of Ticks and Leeches. His drumming at the very very end of Rosetta Stoned is pretty unbelievable though. And I love his four-measure fill after the first chorus in Vicarious.

WAK (while killing) 05-08-2006 08:17 PM

Good idea.

WAK (while killing) 05-08-2006 08:21 PM

Danny's got some cool bongo work on this Album, however the bongo interlude on the Salival version of Push*t is probably the coolest bongos ever. Although I'm not sure if he's the one who does those bongos, their still freakin sweet!

BlindWriting 05-08-2006 08:25 PM

They're not bongos. They're tabla. Huge, huge difference. That's what he used primarily on this album in terms of hand percussion as well as on Lateralus.

deadohiosky9 05-08-2006 08:44 PM
I don't want to whore the vocal opening of The Pot, but that down right makes the album for me vocally.
Same here man. The Pot has one of his best vocal performances in my opinion.

The tabla own.

Futuro 05-08-2006 08:48 PM

He samples Cuicas that have been raised in pitch on intension.

SmashingPumpkin 05-08-2006 08:48 PM

Haven't posted here in a while. AP tests officially suck.

The new Tool album rocks and I'm loving "Rosetta Stoned" at the moment.

deadohiosky9 05-08-2006 08:53 PM

Rosetta Stoned is my favorite song on the album.

Spiritofmosa 05-08-2006 09:08 PM

is the solo of rosetta stoned done by a talkbox ? because wah is sounding like talkbox

deadohiosky9 05-08-2006 09:32 PM

I think it is, I'd have to relisten to be sure though.

3074326 05-08-2006 11:21 PM

Jones confirmed use of a talk box on the album, so it probably is.

I hate talk boxes..

deadinholywood 05-09-2006 12:18 AM

Apparently its him using a talkbox and an Epilady on his strings at the same time

SonorKen 05-09-2006 12:54 AM

Has anyone who have seen the Tool shows up to date paid attention to Carey in the tabla parts? Does he have all the tabla parts sampled into his Handsonic or is he recording them then triggering them with the MC909?

Im curious if he is actually playing an actual tabla on stage, playing the handsonic, or running loops live.

syous 05-09-2006 02:09 AM
is the solo of rosetta stoned done by a talkbox ? because wah is sounding like talkbox
that's the solo in Jambi where he uses a talkbox.

on rosetta stoned he has some sort of pedal thing...it's a bronze tube w/a pickup in side of it. This might be used on rosetta stoned.

Read his guitar world interview.

syous 05-09-2006 02:13 AM
there is no "puzzle". thats something pretensious TOoL fans think of to make it sound more important, or thought out
they talk about a puzzle on toolband.com's front page.
is the solo of rosetta stoned done by a talkbox ? because wah is sounding like talkbox
I am pretty sure that is just normal wah, played through that weird cylindrical speaker thing Baressi brought in for Adam to mess with. At least thats my theory, in the Guitar World interview Adam says the speaker produces a really weird old radio like sound, there isnt much else I can hear on the album that has that kinda sound to it.

Tangent : Wings is starting to bug me a bit, its a good song and all but its kind of unnecessary, its just a condensed version of 10000 days. Dont get me wrong I love when songs reflect those that proceed them, like parabol/parabola, but Wings i dont know, I guess I would have rathered they incorporated the different ideas from it into 10 000 days, making that a stronger song. Kinda plays into my filler gripe from before too...but oh well, still a great album.

UpperDecker 05-09-2006 06:14 AM

I've been listening to this since the leak and at first i wasn't sure but now i think this might be their best record. I just can't stop listening to it, every song is amazing.
