Its all in how you interpret (god I wish I could spell that word) the album. I interpret it as the story of a band whose front man (Billy Shears) feels isolated from the world because of his fame and ends up killing himself in the end.

Its just one way of looking at it, that might not be how John intented it. I can't see how A Saucerful of Secrets is a rock oprea, but David Gilmour says he gets scripts for it from fans every once in a while.

Should I get Music from Big Pink for the Band's s/t? Don't say both please :upset:

On the Sgt. Pepper's debate....my senior paper is one rock operas and concept albums. From what I've read, at the time people considered it a concept album, but by modern definition it doesn't really fit. The only concept aspects of the album are both Sgt. Peppers songs and With a Little Help From my Friends. Everything else, to the 'believers', are the fictional band's set list.....the people who point out that the album isn't a concept album says all the songs in between are just a bunch of songs.

I think Sgt Peppers could get away with being a concept album...All the songs do have to do with the same general topic, and its first and (second to) last song re-appear like other concept albums. Wether the beatles intended this, i dont know, but its still a fabulous album.

Again its all in how you interpret it. In my head all of the songs move the story till its climax with A Day In The Life. Lucy In The Sky With Dimonds is just another song kind of like Good Bye Blue Sky on The Wall, its true there are a few songs like that, but here are the songs I feel keep the story moving. Getting Better all the Time describes Shears childhood to his adult life, Shes Leaving Home is about the main characters sister probally running away, though for that song I think I'm streaching it, When I'm 64 is the main character quistioning wheather or not hes getting too old for rock and roll, I think Lovley Rita is about what happened to Shears sister after she left in Shes Leaving Home, Good Morning is about how Shears life is going back to the way it was in Getting Better all the Time, The Repraise is about the band going out of style again, and A Day in the Life is abut a fan reading the paper and reading that his favorite artist (Shears) has killed himself. I know some of it is a streach, and I'm putting more thought into it then John intented, but the great thing about the Beatles is their songs mean different things to different people. To some people one of their songs might mean to go on a killing spree and write the name of the song on the wall. This is just another way to look at the album.

And i found this cool link of George Harrison playing a rare song 'in my little snapshot album'. I think its one of, or THE only recording of him playing it, since some guy in the audience at some festival had a tape recorder with hi, (you can imagine how bad the quality is). He playing it on his Banjo Ukalaly (sp?), and even forgot some of the words. For anyone interested, ill be posting it in the official beatles thread soon.

First, the idea of Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band is not John's, it's Paul. Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band, With a Little Help From My Friends and Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band Reprise are all Paul's work. A Day in The Life is the only one that can fit into the concept album category that John wrote, and the middle part was writtened by Paul. This is Paul's baby, he thinks it's the best darn thing he has ever done.

But you see, Sgt Pepper's is considered the first concept album because before that there was nothing like it. They didn't sat down and said "Hey guys, let's make a concept album!" The term concept album came after Pepper was released. It's not really a concept album, but the bluprint of one. The only thing that has the concept album feel are the songs I mentioned above. I never really thought of the Billy Shears story. I always thought it was just the Beatles posing as "The Lonely Hearts Club Band" and they're playing a show.

yes. im also disappointed that so many people think [B]DONT[/B] think hendrix is up there. its greatest. not top 100 shredders/technical virtuosos. jeff beck really should win though. and im disappointed that t bone walker wasnt up there. but not really surprised.

Well, Harrison WAS the lead guitar player.

But Lennon is still a guitar player. Syd Barrett made the list and he only play on one album. Lennon did some of the solos in the Beatles records too, and well.. he plays the guitar too.

Edit: Well.. he did appeared on A Saucerfull of Secrets and has two solo albums... but people know more of him by PATGOD, and if I'm not mistaken, he didn't play on ASOFS, but he told Gilmour how to play his parts.
