Alright, well until I really thought about it (just now), I considered music sounds arranged in a melody, but thinking about songs that are just drums (for instance, some Eastern music) caused me to realize that sounds arranged in rhythm (as opposed to melody) would also be considered music.

So yea, I was thinking pretty ignorantly when I made that comment, because I hadn't really thought about it completely until now.
Music has three main characteristics Rhythm, Pitch, Timbre(leaving aside artistic and emotional appeal appeal and stylings). All music exhibits these characteristcs. You are thinking of pitch in the wrong way. Even your desk exhibits characteristics of pitch. Any musician must deal with those three things, though just sometimes in very different ways.
I also can't usually say if people are better than others, and I wasn't trying to, I was threw in that Bonham had groove since that topic was on my mind.
I know just all this talk of it got me trying to rank them and then, well it just never works out.

you also have to take into consideration the versatility of the drummer. when you get to that, its a no contest. the studio drummers are generall, as a rule, more technically and musically advanced than a drummer who stays within the confines of a particular band. gadd, colaiuta, weckl, theyre all known within the drumming world as the top of the heap. just consider the bands theyve played for. steely dan, sting, britney spears, al di meola, stanley clarke, the list would take several pages. when it comes to overall drumming ability, bonham is lower on the ladder than several drummers. i would rank moon, peart, baker, cobham, possibly bruford, and possibly paice above him. and thats without the studio ones because they transcend genre classification.

edit: thats a sweet shirt

Glitterati 07-08-2005 02:25 AM

So, does anyone here actually consider The Beatles overrated?

blue3 07-08-2005 02:32 AM

I don't

Illmatic 07-08-2005 02:34 AM

Yes and no.

(read: I have no idea where to stand on that issue)

clown_phobia 07-08-2005 02:43 AM

No way - I think they're underrated

Against Miik! 07-08-2005 03:05 AM

As said by threadstarter of Beatles overrated thread:
i think that the reason they are so big is a time thing around then no rock or pop rock groups (whatever cateragorie u want to call them) and we had nothing to compare them to
How about comparing them to every pop rock band that ever came after them, and them still being considered the best.

Ulysses 07-08-2005 08:06 AM

No, i don't think they are overated. But then again my view is biased as I love them and that whole era. Albums such as Rubber Soul, Revolver, Peppers, White Album and Abbey Road are all so definitive in the whole late 60's counterculture movement and each representative of change in sound within the Beatles themselves. Experimentation in the studio and change in the way they were perceived by the public in regards to changing from being "squeaky clean" to becoming involved in drugs and eastern philosophies. The lyrics, the music and the inspiration and influences on bands and whole movements is phenominal and therefore I cannot ever feel that the Beatles were/are overrated. After all they have so many songs that I listen to over and over.

RobNY 07-08-2005 08:42 AM

Abbey Road is really a spectacular album. That's what really made me love the Beatles. Before that I had only really examined much of their earlier, poppiest songs. But it was lacking... something in substance. The Beatles manage to be an amazing pop outfit, and then they also deliver some great rock as they mature. The change from pop to psychedelia is really amazing.

Are they overrated? I don't know. Do they deserve much of their fame and adulation? More than most famous bands do, yes.

lunch998 07-08-2005 08:58 AM

I think The Beatles are only overrated when people say, without question, that they are the greatest band ever. I think this conclusion should only be reached after sizing up the contenters.

This isn't to say that they can't be your favorite band, I will never have a problem with that. However, greatest band ever is a much different title than your favorite band.

Broken Arrow 07-08-2005 08:58 AM

So, I like the album Lunch sent me last night, Mr. Fantasy.

Yea Mr. Fantasy is a cool psychedelic album. In addition to the title track, Paper Sun is a classic. Traffic's s/t and Last Exit are both great 60's albums, and their sound changes a bit but the music still remains good on John Barleycorn and Low Spark of High-Heeled Boys.

Ya, studio drummers are very versatile. I don't know if I'd put all those guys ahead of him though. Like I said Bonham is better than many people give him credit for. Infact one of the things that made him such a great controlled and powerful rock drummer was because he learned to play other styles (particularly jazz, which comes out in some of the zeppelin music). One thing you have to remember is although stduio legends tend to be the most proficient a great drummer like bonham can play alot more than you're going to hear on Zeppelin albums. But being in a band limits what you get to show off alot more than being a studio drummer does.

Oh and ya, nice shirt.

Woodstock 07-08-2005 09:49 AM

He took it on a voyage through the Sahara Desert in November of 1995, but neither he nor the guitar was ever heard from again.

I <3 Roy Orbison. I have his early work greatest hits, I like his latter stuff better. Traveling Wilburys and Mystery Girls are some of his best work, with the help of Jeff Lynne. He had a very tragic life, and died too young.

BludgeonySteve 07-08-2005 08:46 PM

Wasn't he in some good band or something? I forget which one.

Broken Arrow 07-08-2005 08:47 PM

The Traveling willburies.
