He's in Neighbours.

another word against physics and you'll be buried before you can say "Its all relative", punk.

Maths rulz.

Harold Bishop's dead :(

moaner 10-04-2005 02:29 PM

omg, sounds like your problem is with low quality 60s buildings and not maths

So i wish you good luck in finding a new hall of maths

I found AS Physics really difficult :(

Mainly because I spent half of my lessons not doing much work...if I'd worked harder then I would've understood it all better.

Curse my lazy-ness.
Particle Physics and the Universe

Newton was one of the first experimental scientists. His greatest achievements were his laws of motion, especially the one concerning gravity. Another type of scientist is a theoretical scientist- this is one who tries to link seemingly separate thing. A good example of a theoretical scientist is Faraday- he linked electric and magnetic forces into one, unified force. Maxwell, another scientist, took Faraday’s findings and put them into a useful mathematical form. Another great scientist of our time is Einstein, who made some very important conclusions. These included that everything was relative, and that space and time were very closely linked- as well as his “E= MC^2” formula. Newton’s work was improved by Einstein with “Quantum theory”, which showed that although obviously Newton was not entirely wrong, improvements could be made upon his work.

Schrödinger’s cat is an extremely effective analogy to demonstrate an aspect of Quantum theory. The experiment, which was never intended to be actually carried out, involves a truly random event (in this case, whether or not a piece of radioactive material releases a radioactive particle or not). If it does, poison will be released and a cat will therefore be killed. The entire experiment would take place inside a sealed, opaque box. The idea was that until the box was opened, there would be no way of knowing if the cat was dead or alive, and therefore it wasn’t really either. Once the box was opened, the cat would assume its state of ‘dead’ or ‘alive’.

Particle physicists are currently trying to emulate the conditions of the early universe, using equipment such as particle accelerators. One theory they have come up with is “GUT”- the Grand Unified Theory – although GUT does not really incorporate gravity. One explanation for this is the theory of “superstrings”; these would account for there being forces between all the matter in the universe. Superstrings would be strings taking 10 dimensions (and this could explain the universe being in more than 3 dimensions and therefore seeming “curved”).

Another widely used theory other than GUT and superstrings is “TOE”; the theory of everything. Some (naïve?) scientists hailed the theory as “the end of physics” as it accounts for everything we know about in the universe today. However, it seems inevitable that as technology improves we will discover more about the universe, of old, of the present and of the future.

There are many ways to account for the existence of the universe. My personal opinion is that “Why is the universe here” is a bit of a silly question; if it was not here, I would not be able to question its non-existence, and so however unlikely it is, the fact that it is here is sufficient justification for these extraordinary odds. The concept of infinite parallel universes unfolding every time a decision is made also seems possible to me, although the idea of crossing into these universes seems entirely impossible.

Many people account for the existence of the universe as being the creation of some description of deity (God, Allah, etc.). However, the only way this would be possible would be if the said creator was infinite (to account for the infinite complexity and seemingly infinite size of the universe). We know that if you attempt to add infinity to infinity, the only plausible answer is that you are still left with infinity. Therefore, if both the universe and its creator were infinite, they would simply become one. Since we know that the universe exists (our ability to contemplate its non-existence is proof enough that it exists), then if the universe was created, it would have created itself- thus supporting the idea that it exists because it does.
WHAT. THE. FUCK?!?!

I was kinda upset after hearing Ronnie Barker had died but this makes everything worse :upset:

the_uber_penguin 10-05-2005 04:58 AM

Moaner, you know Einstein was always really skeptical of quantum theory, right?

His special theory of relativity allowed it to happen, but it was Rosenberg (or Heisenberg...I can't remember which) who came up with the essentials of quantum theory. Not Einstein.

Then again, I'm just a sad nitpicker.

Oh, and a very leasurly (sp?) FOD, by the way.

schroedinger invented an experiment in which a cat could die, but it was never performed, it was simply an example.

So, I only had one lesson today.

In that lesson, I sat in the recording studio adding EQ, Chorus and Compression to the bass I recorded yesterday for my Recording #1. I also spent about 10mins laughing at my brother and his friends, for they were in their own music lesson (GCSE) and were doing something outside with a bunch of guitars.

Its been a slow, yet entertaining day.

Here's a fun fact: I get at least 2 free lessons a day. I only have one day in my 2-week timetable where I have no free's.

Being in Year 13 has its advantages :)

the_uber_penguin 10-05-2005 02:15 PM

I'm in year 13.

I only have 3 frees per week.

EdwardTheGreat 10-05-2005 02:21 PM

3 frees per week! Christ I've got 12! And I'm a first year, so I'm going to get more next year. How many subjects are you taking?

Brew 10-05-2005 02:50 PM

I have about 16 this week and 12 next week.

I take Art, Music Tech and Geography. The main reason why I have so many frees is because Music Tech is horribly under-timetabled, I get 6 lessons this week and only 2 lessons next week. (We're on a crazy 2 week timetable system)

Heh, this week (Week A) looks like this...

I get seven frees in my two week time table - and that includes lunches. If you don't include lunches, i have six frees in two weeks; I only actually have one free lunchtime in my whole 2-week time table
