About 550 USD maybe?

Foxfire 08-18-2004 02:30 AM

550 USD; oh yeah, it's about 1.50 USD / Pound, yes? Or a bit more I think...whatever.

Anyhoo...How many strings/what genre of music do you play/favorite technique/etcetc.

:p

PaulR 08-18-2004 02:35 AM

I currently play 4 strings but I was thinking about upgrading to 5 because I do a lot of slap stuff. I don't really stick to any particular genre of music.
I guess this isn't really helping.
I'm picky.

Foxfire 08-18-2004 02:39 AM

Well for sure, go out and try basses first.

550 USD - My and BFAGs love, the Ibanez SR500 series; the SR505 is a beauty to play. The SRX-705 (Ibanez again) is supposed to be crazy good as well. The Curbow 5 is supposed to be great (I own a Curbow 4 and some people here own a 5 or 6). For the most part, people tend to say to stay away from Fender 5ers.

I've heard, too, that if you're considering going from 4 to 5, you may as well go 6, so that you don't regret it later.

Either way, try them out at a store first.

acexxxoasis 08-18-2004 02:42 AM

I was ok with 6 for a while
but it just got slow and daunting now i went down to 4 its strange... I just feel at home on teh 4

PaulR 08-18-2004 02:42 AM

Thanks for the advice.
My friend is just starting off and he wants to know a good starter bass for around £300. Theres a Fender P Standard Bass for £329 that he may be interested in... any ideas?

Foxfire 08-18-2004 02:44 AM

Good starter bass?

Try to go used. Used owns. MusicMan Stingrays sell for like 1200 USD new but you can get one used for 800-900 USD.

Search eBay and any place that sells used instruments.

I'm a fan of Fender Ps, myself, but if I got one, it'd be the American Deluxe (P + MM pickups).

PaulR 08-18-2004 02:45 AM

Ok. Again thanks for the advice.

Foxfire 08-18-2004 02:48 AM

Either way, tell him to try stuff out first!

My opinions are exactly that: opinions.

For example, I like Warwick Thumbs. Some people hate them. Some people say the MusicMan Stingray is the best bass ever...I disagree and would rather have a Conklin GT-7.

You (and him) should try stuff out, as it's the only way to know what's best.
If you like the feel and the sound, who cares what anyone else thinks? :)

PaulR 08-18-2004 02:51 AM

How long have you been playing?

Foxfire 08-18-2004 02:53 AM

Since January. :p

I spend too much time on here, though.

PaulR 08-18-2004 02:55 AM

And you're already upgrading?
I've been playing for about 20 months and I haven't even thought about upgrading till just recently.
Made much progress (in learning etc)?

Foxfire 08-18-2004 02:57 AM

I suppose.

It's not so much upgrading, I guess, as exploring. I haven't really had a chance to mess with 6+ string basses, and I don't feel at home with guitar.

It's stupid to say but I feel oddly limited on a 4. I'll be writing something and go "****IT! If only I had those 3 other strings..." I can't say I don't love my Curbow though.

I have a bunch of styles I need to study. Recently I've been over-slapping, and would like to get into Jazz, Blues, Latin, Reggae, and finger-funk.

PaulR 08-18-2004 03:01 AM

Thats cool I guess.
Its important to look at all those styles and explore everything that the bass can do.

Foxfire 08-18-2004 03:03 AM

I overslap way too much though. Example: after a month of playing I could play the Stu Hamm Country Music bit from one of his solos.

Foxfire 08-18-2004 03:04 AM

Well I'm off to sleep. See ya later.

PaulR 08-18-2004 03:05 AM
It's called heart burn. All these **** pharmecutical companies give things like 'heart burn' this horrible sounding name like 'ACID REFLUX DISEASE' meanwhile we still call AIDS, AIDS, rather than 'turning your insides to liquid and killing you over the years with a slow painful death' disease.

joe
Well it's different for me, because I have a heiatul hernia, this causes acid from my stomach to constantly come up my esophagus (sp). So it is acid reflux...

Foxfire 08-18-2004 02:13 PM

When I was in 5th grade I got it one morning when I woke up. It feels like your throat is burning up. >_<

nisakss 08-18-2004 02:20 PM
