i don't get it

is it because he said "grammer"?

because that's not really a grammar issue that's just bad spelling. grammar is like syntax and structure foo

BLASPHEMYOGAPHER 01-28-2010 03:03 AM

well tbh grammar and spelling are two different things so idk he could suck at spelling but be a grammar wizard

EDIT: yeah beat
Emperor are so hard to compare to any other black metal band. No one can use polyphony like they do - 5, 6, 7 melodies at once... and it still works? Just incredible. They are in a class all their own, but that is not to say they are the only black metal worth listening to...
technical skill is a means, not an end. it's when it's treated at an end that boring unoriginal bands get praise, like late emperor or ihsahn, and certainly meshuggah

I would agree with Meshuggah and Ihsahn, but I think late Emperor has a lot more too it than you give it credit for. Sure, I could see it not being your style, but it's far from music based purely on technicality

Stevie 01-28-2010 06:22 AM

yeah i wasn't 100% on including emperor on that...i wanted more to relate it to the post i was quoting :-s

i never found anything good about IX Equilibrium but Prometheus has some good passages
What does something being black metal or not have to do with credibility?
let's not kid ourselves, they obviously wanted money when they released that album

Moon Flavor 01-28-2010 09:30 AM
let's not kid ourselves, they obviously wanted money when they released that album
seriously?

I'm pretty sure they're all still workin at mcdonalds

even the most popular of death metal bands don't make that much money it's a relatively small fan base either way

and stevie i agree but I dunno I love Prometheus it's such a ****ing weird awesome album. although weird isn't what you guys are typically looking for i suppose

masscows 01-28-2010 09:34 AM

Dimmu Borgir is HUGE dude, I wouldn't be surprised if Shagrath made $150k+/year from the band alone. At New England Metalfest in 08 I couldn't even count the number of Dimmu Borgir shirts, out of the 8000~ people there probably 1/4 of them were sporting Dimmu shirts.

I mean, he's married to a model, and I doubt someone of that status would bother with anyone who wasn't raking in the dough in one way or another.

I like weird. I listen to Brenoritvrezorkre.

masscows 01-28-2010 09:41 AM

I remember thinking some parts of Prometheus were cool but most of the time I was just thinking about how much the songs just didn't work.

Stevie 01-28-2010 04:18 PM

i don't know...i remember reading a glen benton interview a few years back and he said that when he went on tour he'd make enough money to live on for a year, ie he had a pretty average salary for the US...whether dimmu borgir is bigger or not i suppose maybe it is, but along with that probably comes more staff on tours because of the bigger stage shows, more band members, etc.

xkeyboardmoshx 01-28-2010 04:23 PM

You see a lot more Dimmu Borgir merch in Hot Topic than Deicide, so I'm sure they make a bit more off touring.

Morumbar 01-28-2010 04:33 PM

A friend of mine keeps telling me how amazing WITTR's Two Hunters is. I gave it another try today, but I just can't really get past the first two tracks (into is great btw). I always get bored with them so quickly.

xkeyboardmoshx 01-28-2010 04:37 PM

I felt that way until I saw them live, then they just kind of clicked with me. Black Cascade is their best though srsly.

masscows 01-28-2010 04:40 PM

Malevolent Grain is really good, probably their best release imo because it doesn't overstay its welcome at all.

xkeyboardmoshx 01-28-2010 04:42 PM

I still need to get that.

Morumbar 01-28-2010 04:44 PM

Sounds like I should check those out.

Anglachel 01-28-2010 05:30 PM

Yeah I only really started listening to WITTR after seeing them

I has Malevolent Grain on vinyl and listen to it a lot more than any of their other stuff

+100 hipster points

xkeyboardmoshx 01-28-2010 05:34 PM

RouteOne 01-28-2010 06:04 PM

Diadem of 12 stars is their best. Black cascade is just plain boring.

RetiredAt21 01-28-2010 06:29 PM

Can't stop listening to Cirrhus. Band is so ****ing good.

xkeyboardmoshx 01-28-2010 06:35 PM
Diadem of 12 stars is their best. Black cascade is just plain boring.
Ron, please take the dicks out your ears gaywad. :o

Nepenthe 01-28-2010 06:37 PM

yeah freal diadem is their worst and cascade is their best

jk2two 01-28-2010 06:39 PM

I agree - Meshuggah does not deserve to be part of the conversation. Meshuggah are only technical in one aspect - time signature. Playing ONE note 13 times instead of 8 does not impress me.

xkeyboardmoshx 01-28-2010 06:46 PM

Later Emperor is awesome imo, it's not black metal, but who cares?

The Eruption is an awesome song.

Itwasthatwas 01-28-2010 06:50 PM

this, later ****'s got so much depth, especially Prometheus
this, later ****'s got so much depth, especially Prometheus
Agreed - and IX Equilibrium gets a bad rap - "Curse You All Men!" is a great song.

xkeyboardmoshx 01-28-2010 06:55 PM

The version on Anthems is better.

rasputin 01-28-2010 06:57 PM
Diadem of 12 stars is their best. Black cascade is just plain boring.
agreed. everything of theirs except diadem is boring.
