I gotta say if it wasn't for good charlotte and other pop punk who basically converted me to nu metal who then converted me to metallica and other metal, I wouldn't listen to metal now probably. So thanks all those bands. :)

Drone 03-23-2006 03:44 PM

Yeah, Load is a great album. I like the thrash Metallica more, myself, but Load era was good too. In terms of the new album, I am hoping for some sort of mix. Some thrash songs, some black album style songs, an instrumental, and a ballad. Man, that would be sweet. Anyone agree?

PepsiMetal 03-23-2006 03:46 PM

Yea I agree Drone. A little of everything would be the best.

superflyjojo 03-23-2006 03:50 PM

I guess a mix of styles would be pretty cool too. I don't hate the stuff after Justice, it's just that I much prefer the thrash stuff.

NP: Type O Negative - Black No. 1 (Little Miss Scare-All)

Rattlehead 03-23-2006 03:54 PM

i listen to their music equally, i like the lot. at first i preferred the later stuff(Black onwards) and then i listened to the thrash more and i was mezmerized. good stuff. i listened to Justice album 24/7 and i still enjoy listening to it.

superflyjojo 03-23-2006 04:04 PM

I've recently been liking Kill Em All alot. I just love the raw sound.

NP: Symphony X - King Of Terrors

Jev 03-23-2006 04:05 PM
yea yea, Kirk needs to step out of his lapse that he experienced in St.Anger. some shredding would be a nice change.
He's gonna need to get practicing then.

Metal Militia is an underrated gem.

Hell yeah. Thats my favorite song on KEA, yet nobody I talk to agrees with me.

NP: Immortal - At The Heart Of Winter

PepsiMetal 03-23-2006 04:26 PM

Metal Militia sounds like Hit the lights.

Jev 03-23-2006 04:29 PM

I never thought it did. In what way?

Dreaming Neon Black 03-24-2006 01:09 AM

Ha ha ha, new name.

Representing Metallica! Woooo! :D

/SDMF

Wtf? Kirk needs to Shred?

No.

PepsiMetal 03-24-2006 01:15 AM
I never thought it did. In what way?
In hit the lights, after their drum intro and stuff, when that fast guitar riff comes in, sounds very similar to the intro riff in metal militia. And then when cymbals hit it's like at the same places in both songs. But yea, later on it gets different and melody is different of course.

Dreaming Neon Black 03-24-2006 01:30 AM

Im thinking, while Im watching the November 13th gig with the Stones, Metallica should play Orion on their U.S. Tour.

Who agrees? :O

I doubt they will play that. It was played at Cliff's funeral so obviously means a lot to them.

wouldn't that be "actin' like a maniac"?

and Kirk can shred

Jev 03-24-2006 10:16 AM

I wouldn't class any of his solos as shred.

SimonCore 03-24-2006 10:21 AM
I wouldn't class any of his solos as shred.
What would you class them as then?

Jev 03-24-2006 10:31 AM
What would you class them as then?
They're fast but they're not shred.

BassMasterMike88 03-24-2006 01:09 PM

The Black album was where Metallica backed away from thrash and took quite a few people by surprise, now what would really make my day would be a return to true thrash/speed, not how they attempted to go back to their roots with St. Anger.

hetfieldfan86 03-24-2006 02:31 PM

OK....folks, Thats NOT what they were doing with "..Anger". It was really 2 things: James comin back from therapy, and Bob tryin to be different and srewin around with Pro-tools....I am positive anything they write with Rob will be wayyyy better....and the fact that we got Rick Rubin workin in there!!! YEaahhhh!!!.....only downside, there not playin the U.S. til '07 prolly. I'm 19 and still haven't seen em! I will finally see BLS and everybody at Ozzfest!!! ROCK ON!!!

Prince of Darkness 03-24-2006 03:17 PM

I just bought that Jump in The Fire/Creeping Death EP, because I heard it's very rare. So yeah, I got it! And I'm seeing the 'tallica live tomorrow! Oh YEAH!

Rattlehead 03-24-2006 04:46 PM

yea Rob should be a great influence.

and ive seen kirk shred on videos, and i think the question was whether he could, not whether he does. but it don't matter. his solos kick ***

SimonCore 03-24-2006 05:39 PM

Kirk's just as good as any guitarist that does shred. Which he can anyway!

I'll abstain from this. But I have to say when people praise Kirk as one of the greatest guitarists it makes me a little bit frustrated.

Rattlehead 03-24-2006 05:51 PM

Kirk can shred kirk, makes great solos, and he is a great guitarist.

Yeah me too, but that doesn't deny that he can't shred!

vashts80 03-24-2006 07:23 PM

Kirk is a standard thrash guitarist now, nothing more. Does he sweep pick? Does he not abuse his wah pedal every song? Does he use any other scales than the pentatonic scale?

Ozzfest's lineup blows. I'm not going to pay $95/person to see Strapping and Lacuna and then a bunch of garbage, and I don't even know if Strapping would play my date since they're on a "rotating slot", whatevertf that means

Errr, theres a bunch of guitarists that use the Pentatonic scale.

Sounds catchy, if you weren't so techincal, you wouldnt even notice. :)

Yeah, great solos, pentatonic abuse... Whatever does it for you, I guess.
Errr, theres a bunch of guitarists that use the Pentatonic scale.
That's ALL he uses...

He is seriously a fairly average guitarist, he does what he can do (i.e. Pentatonic/Wah Abuse) well, but never branches out and tries anything new.

Dreaming Neon Black 03-25-2006 01:10 AM

One thing Megadeth always had on Metallica was lead playing. Kirk is a decent player, but Marty Friedman dominates him in every way.
One thing Megadeth always had on Metallica was lead playing. Kirk is a decent player, but Marty Friedman dominates him in every way.
Eww..

Opinion, ftw?

I personally find Martys playing dull. Hes decent, skillwise, thats for sure.

lionelhutz88 03-25-2006 01:51 AM

Kirk's playing fits the music I guess, but I can almost always predict his next note. Friedman's playing, especially on Rust in Peace, was phenomenal. His solos are the highlights of that album, and he took megadeth to the next level musically.

PepsiMetal 03-25-2006 01:52 AM

I like kirk's playing. Especially in songs like FTB where the solos just sorta fade in and out while jamas plays rhythm. It fits perfectly. Some of kirk's solos are annoying, like they just jump in, out of the blue, and doesn't really fit as well. But most of them fit the songs quite good.

I'm not really a megadeth fan, so I don't know/care if their lead guitarist is better or worse especially since they change their musicians often.

lionelhutz88 03-25-2006 01:55 AM

Kirk's playing was best on AJFA probably. His solos became pretty bland on the Black album, although wherever I may roam has one of his best solos. I can't listen to Megadeth past Rust in Peace, but Friedman's playing is superb on that album. Him and Skolnick were my favorite thrash guitarists.

ever eeking always rupert 03-25-2006 02:59 AM

I'd say MOP has Kirk's best solos

Kirk's Puppet 03-25-2006 03:26 AM

Kirk is an average metal guitarist. There are dozens of better guitarists out there.
