As I got to work today, I found out that my friend/colleague was murdered last night.

Damn.

:upset:

Uhh.. what happened?

Gattsu347 06-22-2009 03:39 PM

no video spiff :/

but we went into it knowing it was a free gig, and ended up getting paid 300 bucks!

Awesome. How did the crowd respond to your set?

Try and get some recordings at one of your next shows coming up!

Gattsu347 06-22-2009 04:01 PM

our demo is being mixed right now so pretty soon i'll have something for ya.

the crowd loved it and had us perform an encore song, which was the only thing about the show i didnt like cause we basically just jammed and it sounded like crap compared to the rest of the set.

fatbandit 06-22-2009 04:11 PM

never play an encore unless you've rehearsed it.

on that note, what kind of unsigned band is big headed enough to rehearse an encore?

gaslight 06-22-2009 04:14 PM

You don't have to specifically rehearse a song as an encore tune, just use one of our songs that wasn't in the set.

fatbandit 06-22-2009 04:18 PM

an encore song should be like... the best song. you know, the one the crowd has been waiting all night for.

so playing a track you didn't think should have made it into the real set that night in the first place just doesn't seem right.

gaslight 06-22-2009 04:22 PM

Just because you didn't choose to put a song in the set for the night doesn't mean it wasn't good enough to make the set. I guess it depends on the size of the pool of songs your band has to pick from.

Depending on the gig it could be really inappropriate to play an encore, if the running order is tight then all you're doing is wrecking the scheduling and probably taking set time away from somebody else.

From everything I've gathered, he was ambushed at a light, killed, and left on the side of the road.

F**king tragic, man.

fatbandit 06-22-2009 05:02 PM

To be honest, I think I'm just biased in that I hate encores when 'big' bands do them, let alone small unsigned ones.

Killed for his car?

Why do you hate encores?

Gattsu347 06-22-2009 05:32 PM

yeah we didnt have another song. its kinda hard to tell a crowd of people no...

gaslight 06-22-2009 05:34 PM

Nah it's easy. Just tell them to buy the CD if they want to hear more.

Gattsu347 06-22-2009 05:37 PM

hmmm good call. i'll remember that one

Spaceman Spiff 06-22-2009 05:38 PM

The last show my band played the whole place was screaming for an encore, so we played a song that we normally put on our sets but cut out due to time. Even though it's a long song, everyone enjoyed it, no one complained.

Efrim 06-22-2009 07:02 PM

Hey Spiff, I forgot about the file upload size limit. I'm going to try to finish it tonight, yesterday amounted to me swearing at the computer after the 1.5 hours it took to upload the file and for it to say "Lol no wai"

I'm taking a break from recommending music to people, so download one and check it out yourself.

BenJammin 06-22-2009 09:42 PM

The Brown Bunny soundtrack has a couple of his best songs, imo.

Smile From The Streets You Hold is beyond awful if I remember correctly.

Not really the album to judge him on, imo, since he was neck-deep in heroin at the time.

Anything from Shadows Collide With People and on is good.

Jaded 06-22-2009 10:45 PM

John frusciante's solo stuff is mostly awful IMO.

that doesn't automatically make that artist bad at making music. tons of musicians were into heroin. the best songwriter i know personally is into heroin.

but okay i'll get some

Efrim 06-22-2009 11:01 PM

Nearly done, only the empyrean left.

I don't know what you're talking about. I'm not into heroin.
I don't know what you're talking about. I'm not into heroin.
fmb implied that that frusciante album is **** because he was bad into heroin. i replied by saying that heroin doesn't automatically make an artist bad and will continue by saying that addiction stirs up a lot of negative emotion which often is good for writing real meaningful music from the heart.

i never said anything about you

unless you were making a joke about you being the best songwriter i know personally, which would be weird cuz i don't know you

Efrim 06-22-2009 11:31 PM

yes, it was a joke.

EDIT: also, that is Ben, not fmb.

No, I know it doesn't automatically make them bad, but that's why his music was bad.

FunkMetalBass 06-23-2009 09:43 AM
Wtf.

I don't know, to be honest. I suspect it was to get at another member in his family (who is tied up in some heavy stuff).

Either way, totally sh**ty.

Dude that's brutal :(.

Hate all that kind of shit. I've known a few people who've been beated/stabbed over drugs but noone that's lost their lives thankfully.

It's a shame about how many jazz cats were junkies.

Mingus was no junkie though, good man.

Efrim 06-23-2009 06:29 PM

Just a violent nutjob, but i guess that's nitpicking.
