Well that's what you get for listening to them live first :thumb:
Seriously ive always noticed that the difference between live and studio tracks are more noticeable when you hear the live one first. |
^Wow, that's a really good point
|
I think Saucerful is much better on Ummagumma. The studio doesn't have Gilmour's vocals at the end.
|
I've only listened to Ummagumma once or twice, but I didn't really like it. Then again, I didn't really like Animals the first time I listened to it either, so maybe Ummagumma will grow on me.
Yeah, I got WYWH and Animals at the same time, and at first I really liked WYWH a lot more the Animals. Now, it's the other way around, where I like Animals a lot more than WYWH. Animals is my favorite :D
I really need to give More a good listening to. I got Nick Mason's Inside Out last night. I'm gonna start on it today. I already flipped through it and the pictures look awesome.
I started reading it and I liked it a lot, but I didn't have much time so I put it away somewhere. I'll probably get it out once I finish a couple of other books and finish some school work. |
I hoped Mason would have devoted more of the book to the makings of The Wall and The Final Cut. You know, the real juicy bits! That would be my only (minor) gripe though.
Otherwise, I think it's a really great read. It helps explain so much of the history. |
Did he even really play on The Final Cut? I thought Roger had a session drummer do pretty much the whole album.
|
As far as I know, a session drummer was only used on the closing track, Two Suns in the Sunset.
Skip to the chapter about The Final Cut. It'll probably provide answers there :smoke: |

hi guys
other than porcupine tree what other bands really give that pink floyd feel |
Roger Waters' solo stuff?
He basically carried them through the animals - wall era so his solo stuff is just an extension of that. Amused to Death is his best album. I don't know anyone else =/ |
Besides the solo stuff, I guess you could consider Riverside, and maybe the more spacey moments of the Ozric Tentacles, but you already know about them, Amit. >:)
|
yeah thanks jason i've heard both
i think floyd was at their absolute peak with animals i just wish there was more stuff which expanded on that particular era |
Have you heard Rick Wright's solo stuff, Amit?
I'm not sure of anything that matches Animals, but Rick Wright has some pretty cool stuff. |
Does Porcupine Tree really sound like floyd? From what ive heard (admittedly not alot) it didnt sound like them all that much.
|
stupid dream, lightbulb sun, and in absentia definitely gives me the same vibes as my favorite era of pink floyd does
|
The Coffin Daggers do an awesome Interstellar Overdrive cover, but overall they don't sound that floydish.
|
hi guys
other than porcupine tree what other bands really give that pink floyd feel
Radiohead. I consider them the Pink Floyd of today. They completely original but they still give me that kind of feel you're talking about. |
If anyone's heard Dream Theater's The Spirit Carries On, they would instantly be reminded of the Floyd. It's a pretty blatent rip. It's all there - the vaguely familiar chord progression, the big female chorus', and of course, lead singer James Labrie doing his best Roger Waters impersonation.
Good song, but :smoke: |
Ive only heard one of their albums, Train Of Though and I found em too heavy to be compared to Pink Floyd. Of course theres always one-offs and whatnot im just speaking from my experiances with the band.
|
ToT was sort of a diversion for them, and is easily their heaviest album with basically no ballads to speak of.
If you ever get a chance to hear the album Metropolis pt2: Scenes From a Memory, give it a burl because it reminds me of Pink Floyd alot. |

Reading Nick Mason's book has got me into the Syd-era stuff again. "Soon after dark, Emily cries...." I love it! |

Dream Theater did a cover of Dark Side of the Moon. I'm trying to find it on Soulseek, but the only one I can find has no host at the moment.
I'm also trying to find that Metropolis album, but it's the same deal. Is the album "Scenes From a Memory" the same thing? Because soulseek is telling me it is. EDIT: Nevermind, it is, god bless wikipedia. |
It's called Metropolis Pt 2: Scenes From A Memory I believe.
And Images And Words sounds a bit like Pink Floyd. I used to be really into Dream Theater, not so much now. |
Imogene sounds a bit like Pink Floyd (they're pretty similar to Porcupine Tree). Some of the softer songs by Opeth give me a Pink Floyd feel as well, though they sound way more depressed than anything Floyd ever did.
|
With Scenes From a Memory, it's really the ballads that remind me so much of Floyd, particularly the Waters era. The Spirit Carries On could have easily been on The Wall.
And I love ToT too rippa, it's my favourite :p But this is a Pink Floyd thread, so I will discontinue this comment immediately! |
lol Fair enough. Does anybody know where I can get some stuff with Snowy White on it? Hes playing with Roger on the show im seeing. Isnt he?
|
According to his website he is. I don't know about any recordings by him though =/ This site may help
http://members.madasafish.com/~whiteflames/%20discog2.html Bit messy looking but it looks like it's all there :p |
Thanks for the Wright, Waters and Barrett albums on the DU Riva; not got around to listening to The Madcap Laughs yet but the other two are great.
|
No worries mate. Yeah, Broken China is a great album.
|
I gotta get Piper At The Gates of Dawn sometime as well. So many floyd albums to get. Its gonna be a real shame when I have them all.
|
I'd get relics right after piper.
|
LOL @ people comparing modern bands with Pink Floyd.
Shpongle is the modern day Pink Floyd. Flutes instead of guitars though. |
i don't think shpongle is :-X
|
also since i know you guys like pink floyd check this out plz i added some awesome guitar (and slide guitar) to some already awesome guitar in this pink floyd tune i really enjoy a while ago

Hey Atman, I remember you saying that you enjoyed some acoustic folk albums that I sent you, and I'm wondering if you're interested in hearing some more? I have a great acoustic folk album that you might like.
Interested? |
Yea I agree. I don't think there is a modern Floyd right now. And the closest thing to it would be a "standard band lineup" (guitar, bass, drums, vocals, maybe keyboards) that plays atmospheric/spacy music.
So name me some of those, and I might agree, but I don't listen to many modern bands like that. |
tbh there's a lot more fascinating stuff out now than to be worried about bands emulating sounds from over three decades ago
|
Yea true, but I just came in here reading about Shpongle being like Floyd, and I don't think that's really accurate.
|
yeah i don't agree either
