One thing I just recently noticed(or at least actually payed attention to)about MAYH is how no song on there reaches the 10 minute mark.Pretty interesting considering the shortest song on the album before it is 10:09(Nectar).I wonder what the fan reaction to that was back then.

Cain 07-29-2005 09:03 PM

I DON'T CARE I WANT THE ACOUSTICS BACK BECAUSE THEY RULE HARDER THAN BORING "CLEAN GUITARS."

I don't want Opeth sounding like Pink Floyd when they go clean, I want them sounding like Steve Howe doing Roundabout. :D

EDIT: I'm not really as close-minded in general as the above statement would indicate, only when it comes to Opeth. ;)

panasonic youth 07-29-2005 10:44 PM

I'm going tomorrow to get me an opeth album (and possible some metallica and refused but thats not the point), So i was wondering, should I get blackwater park, still life, or orchid? Oh and by the way I don't own any opeth albums. So i was wondering which one is a good place to start. I'm guessing blackwater park since it is so well known. But I'm not sure.

Blackwater Park!

It was my first purchase which led me to their other stuff. I only liked several parts at first, but I kept listening to it, and I began liking more and more.

Well, now it's all awesome.

It may not be your favorite after buying every album, but it's definetly a great place to start.

RouteOne 07-29-2005 10:56 PM

I just d/l "Hours of wealth". AMAZING.

BWP or SL. Either way you're gonna be satisfied.
I'd say the first minute of april ethereal is pretty **** heavy.
Did anyone agree that some of the riffs on the new album sound very toolish
an example: 1:36 - 1:50 in Ghost Of Perdition. Also the start of 'The Grand Conjuration' sounds almost Meshuggah like.
That's what my friends said when I showed them the song. I can sort of see the similarity, but it still has an "Opeth" feel to it.
Good god, the first riff in The Baying Of The Hounds is just such a moshing riff \m/^_^\m/ It seriously kicks ***.

ATC 07-30-2005 06:11 AM
I loaded it up on yousendit.I don't know if I should post it considering how many people are trying not to hear it until the 30th.That would be like waving heroin infront of a person who's trying to stay clean.
Please, sir, give me my fix.

So today, to resist downloading Ghost Reveries I am listening to my entire Opeth collection:
Blackwater Park
Morningrise
Still Life
A few songs from each of the other albums

Mmmmmm :)
Opeth played here last night.. it was so fucking good... they started with Deliverance, then To Rid The Deisease, The Grand Conjuration, and finised with, ofcourse, Demon Of The Fall. It was so amazing.. and they said they were coming back to do a full tour!! I got my setlist signed, my ticket signed, and my new Ghost Reveries shirt signed by Mike. :D It was the best day evvveeeeeeeeeeeer!!
Sheesh... Sounds better than whan I saw them! I saw Opeth in Orlando... Well. First off. They had no sound check. They all came out, (Martinless of course), and Peter started the chords to the Drapery Falls... And when everything came in, all you could hear was a mass buzzing of bass frequencies. You could see Mike playing his lead...But could not hear anything. Shortley after, in the clean section, Martin's bass head started going haywire, screetching, and distorting... Mean while, the bass drums were incredibly to loud, overpowering everything. This happend throughout the whole show... Not to mention they played only three songs, Drapery, Conjuration, and Demon, (Demon was a shortened version, maybe over 5 mins.)
There was no Opeth meet and greet either....
But as I said in an earlier post, just seeing them in person was worth the ticket price.

Darkness 07-30-2005 09:58 AM

Wow.. They had a massive sound check when I was there. It took like 10 min, and the sound was perfect.

Oh and our Demon Of the Fall was definatly extended. Before they play that little riff after the first growled verse there was this really long note held then added with feedback... then there during the instrumental sections it felt like they added a few bars.

Blanka Flip 07-30-2005 01:20 PM

Wow, I wish I could of been at your show... That's awesome. Guess I'll just have to wait for the fall tour!

Kaiwaz 07-30-2005 01:25 PM

I saw them in Minnesota with Devildriver and Moonspell. I don't care too much for those bands - I was only there to see Opeth of course. It was definately the best concert I've ever seen and I've been to quite a few. The only thing that bothered me - is they didn't play anything from Morningrise.

Black Rose Immortal would of been a badass way to end that concert. Still - Demon Of The Fall was outstanding live. I had goosebumps while slam-moshing!

I saw that same show but it was in Anaheim CA. Devildriver were very good. I hated moonspell, and Opeth were amazing. They played some Lynyrd Skynyrd.

Dimebag Johnny Patton 07-30-2005 06:58 PM

Do you know what acoustic and/or electric acoustic guitars Opeth uses?

Martin and Takamine acoustics.

PRS and Gibson electrics.

I saw that show in Toronto. No Lynyrd Skynyrd, but Opeth played the intro of Billie Jean by MJ.

magicfigers90 07-30-2005 11:16 PM

Dude!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!Opeth is the best band in the world(in my opinion).Every single friking song ive heard from them has been like getting an orgasm :thumb:
I currently have a band and we are trying to play their genre, but it's preety hard; especially doing the lyrics. But they have been the most loyal band i'd know(music wise).Hopefully they will keep on playing for more to come :D

Crysiss 07-31-2005 12:23 AM

play their genre huh? i dont wanna sound mean but thats like just copying them. They barely have a specific genre

Dannyboy15 07-31-2005 01:00 AM
Really? What song(s)?
Sweet Home Alabama. Just the intro though. Mike said they grew up listening to music like that.

Yeah but a lot of bands copy, some even play other bands songs, say they are their own, and become famous (Metallica). It's all about influences. If he likes Opeth's style - I encourage him to play it. We need more music like that - then hopefully rap will die. ;)

Anyone know what gear they use on the new album?

Kaiwaz 07-31-2005 12:19 PM
I agree in The Grand Conjuration being great. But those of you who don't like it won't be dissapointed
I've listened to it about 20 times now - I absolutely love it!
I didn't at first though, like most of Opeth's music, it took time to grow on me.

Reverie/Harlequin Forest is my favorite song on the album, but Hours Of Wealth is inspiring also. I couldn't ask for anything more out of a band.

Crysiss 07-31-2005 03:44 PM

Rap will die down and another meaningless genre of music will take over. Synthesizers and Emo anyone?

Also For the album ghost reveries, The guitar work Is definitely new to them, Mikaels Singing Is also way better.

Oh yeah, DevilDriver is the real $hit... They are actual real metal, not this lame bull$hit that's supposed to be around now... Glad to see someone else around here who apprciates them... I've said it before, but Opeth and them are good friends! Mendez even used their bassist's cabinet when I saw them!

That's really cool coming from a guy who I know loves Opeth... Flynn, you've totally set my expectations high for when I go get it the 30th... Will I be let down?

What's different about the singing with this album?

Magicaltroll 07-31-2005 06:26 PM

If someone sent me the new album, I would let them leech off of me (music wise) forever.

Yes, that was a hint.

It's just......better :P I don't know how, but Mikael's just gotten better. His clean vocals just show so much variation, and are just all round more haunting/beautiful at times. And the growls are absolutely amazing.

And magicaltroll834, I'll send you the album if you like, just try and catch me sometime on AIM/MSN

It's been uploaded several times in the other Opeth thread.

Special Brew 08-02-2005 10:30 AM

I've been trying to get the new album off Soulseek for awhile now and have been in queue. I woke this morning with the entire new album downloaded.

I just woke up 30 minutes ago and so far this is one of my favorite Opeth albums for sure, it may even become my favorite. I love how it has more clean vocals and his singing is so much better. Something sounds different about the music in general, although I can't put my finger on it yet. I am only on "Beneath The Mire" so far.

I can't wait 'til the 30th.

\m/

whatduffhuck7 08-02-2005 11:04 AM

yep, 30th is gonna be a happy day for me. i got the promo also but havent listened to it yet. im gonna wait till 30th and buy the cd and listen to it throughout

i was tempted to but the opeth dvd a couple days ago. any body have this? is it worth the 15$?

Det_Nosnip 08-02-2005 11:08 AM

I think so. It kinda sucks that they weren't able to play anything pre BWP (copyright issues), but it's definetly a sweet performance. Lopez freaking sizzles.

Adam Jones is GOD 08-02-2005 11:33 AM

Im going to re-watch it again to try and see where the obvious 'gaps ' are. It seems to flow well, but knowing there were supposed to be more songs, means I can be Mr Observant

Det_Nosnip 08-02-2005 11:45 AM

I suppose I could've seen a few more mostly heavy tracks ala Ghost of Perdition/Baying of the Hounds. The album gets pretty soft for a while in the middle there.
