Gah that sucks my internet has been really dodgy lately too, ever since my mum/brother set up this damn wireless internet it goes offline alot. Have you googled your problem and tried to find if anyone else had a similar problem? Wish i could help there. If all else fails consider a browser change, i was suprised with how user friendly and useful firefox was when i started using it.
And congrats trea :) i read how you went in the vce/hsc discussion thread. Btw, this term our topic is on stuff like minimalism, serialism and chance music. Chance music for anyone who doesn't know...was something used by John cage who composed 4' 33" (4 mins 33 seconds of silence). He composed using a die and chose his note depending on what the die rolled, it's reallyyyy annoying and in my oppinion quite stupid, i get the idea this guy just composed the weirdest ways he could think of so he could deem it experimental and creative, kinda like painting a canvas all one colour. Anyways my composition for this term has to fit into one of the categories they gave us which includes chance music minimalism serialism electronic music and a few others, it's probably going to annoy me but hopefully i can find a way of writing something i like through it. |
Thanks :)
Ah yeah, Cage is a strange guy. Serialism should be fun... tone rows and stuff yeah? I had to play a serial piece for my exam :p. Speaking of strange pieces, we had this piece at AYB... it involved the clarinets and saxes taking off their mouthpieces at some stage and playing through those (gives a high pitched squeal in case you haven't come across that before), trombones and trumpets doing a pitched mouthpiece duet, the percussionists hitting practically anything and everything they could, and one of the movements concluded with the clarinets having to gargle a Bb. Fun stuff! EDIT: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grand_Serenade_for_an_Awful_Lot_of_Winds_and_Percussion The audience usually love it anyway lol. |
Yeah tone rows are the basis of it if i'm not mistaken. I was actually looking at doing serialism, as i don't think i can bring myself to compose something based on the roll of a die :p
 that sounds really fun, reminds me of this composition lecture i went to in sydney where a few students had their compositions showcased. In one of the compositions a few ping pong balls were dropped on the pianos strings followed by an entire bucketfull, the violinist also took a guitar pick and scraped it across the pianos strings quickly, it was weird but cool and fitting to the music. Haha oh yeah the composer also featured in the performance with a rainstick, and actually stood there whilst talking about the piece and explained to a large group of year 11/12 and uni students....what a rainstick was.... |
Somewhere I play has a rainstick. Might be school... I srsly can't remember. Great fun.
That's awesome. I really need to get out to some of those things, I think they'd be really beneficial (not particularly dropping ping pong balls, but you know what I mean). Oh so it's an option of pieces? Depending on what you were allowed for minimalism, I'd so get a bansuri flute with two parts, one a drone and another a really slow flowing melody. If I could get someone to play it... <_< Minimalism is alright but presenting it to the class could be kind of weird/non-exciting for them, that's the only problem. You could dive into some Indian composition there but. You could get some VERY interesting things happening with electronic, and probably compose close to your usual medium (simply using different instruments like synths) if that's what you want to do. Means you can quite possibly convert it later - with a few tweaks - to a song your band can use. Linkage: http://www.dolmetsch.com/musictheory40.htm#minimalism http://www.dolmetsch.com/musictheory40.htm#electronics http://www.dolmetsch.com/musictheory40.htm#twelve <- serialism (it's also called Dodecaphony or twelve note if you're having trouble googling with serialism) http://www.dolmetsch.com/musictheory40.htm#experimental <- this one fairly much just looks at the more famous experimental composers more than anything, but some of the links might be of use if you're wanting to go that way. Love that site. |
Thanks for the links and advice :)
I'll have to have a closer look at them and figure what i'll do. Electronic music and serialism are the two i'm considering at the moment, i could use a drum sequencer and throw some synth like you said on top, record a few loops of sound and try to put some structure into it, maybe i'll get something similar to baba o riley :p i love that song, eh i'll figure something out, thanks again for the advice :) Btw billy hydes sounds soooo awesome, around here we have like 3 music shops and then in sydney/newcastle theres a buttload more. One of them is just down the road from my school so when we have free periods my drummer and i usually go down there to hang about and admire :p |
Nice :). Very effective use of study time, I like it :p.
Sounds good man, have fun with whatever you choose to do. |
watup guys
hows life |
pretty good man
Hehe, this little girl: "Mummy, I love you. I love you more than the shower." Her little sister/friend/whatever: "Jee mum, that must be a loh-ot!" It was so cute. |
sooo...
Sorry didn't make it yesterday Jason, it was my sister's and uncle's birthday the day before so we had to celebrate that plus the party was too far away from yours to get over there in time. |
Did anyone win anything at the cup?
My dad got me sweeps for me and my brother...i got tawqeet, damn horseshoe. Haha ah well. |
$2!!!!
Sweep as well, haha. Both my horses came 3rd and 4th. My grandma did pretty well - she'd betted on the first and second winners. She always backs no. 2 lol. |
Haha, my mum juuuuuuuust missed out on the trifecta, had some other horse instead of #12 apparently
|
Bloody hell.
I've currently got no phone reception, so I'm talking to Jade about Jack using myspace, and f*cking myspace decides to chuck a mental. Jack's only 4 months old now, and he's started rolling around. He's mobile, so we're trying to teach him to crawl. He's still too little to lift himself up, but he's more determined than his old man and his mum put together. Seriously, my son is stubborn. What he's doing, is rolling onto his stomich and trying to lift himself up. He'll get frustrated that he's not strong enough to do it, so he'll start grunting and sooking. Then Jade would pick him up and he'll scream. She'll put him down on his back and he'll scream louder. So she'll roll him onto his belly and he'll keep trying to crawl, still sooking. What a champ. I hate the internet somtimes. I especcially hate myspace sometimes. I missed the cup though guys. I was playing music really loud during it. One of my brother's mates got the trifecta though after he put $500 on it, so he's apparently taking 6 months off work. |
Wow...lucky mate.
Haha your son sounds awesome, i bet if he takes up an instrument he'll be determined to progress on it at a nice pace, betcha can't wait for the day you can jam with him haha. I hate my internet too, always screws up at the worst moments. By the way did you fix that browser problem? |
No, I havn't. I'm actually getting seriously dangerously close to throwing my computer out the window, and buying a Mac.
Yeah, he'll be a drummer I'm tipping, then he'll completely master it by the age of two and take up guitar. |
Noooo, heretic! :p That's really weird but i've never heard of that happening with anyone i know, and my dad used to fix computer stuff like that.
Hmm...
RESOLUTION To resolve this problem in Internet Explorer, follow these steps: 1. Quit all programs that are running. 2. Click Start, and then click Run. 3. Type regsvr32 urlmon.dll, and then click OK. 4. When you receive the "DllRegisterServer in urlmon.dll succeeded" message, click OK. If this does not resolve the problem, repeat steps 2 through 4 for each of the following files (in step 3, replace Urlmon.dll with each of the file names below): • Shdocvw.dll • Actxprxy.dll • Oleaut32.dll • Mshtml.dll • Browseui.dll • Shell32.dll Windows XP and Windows 2000 only Restart the computer to enable the changes to take effect. If the problem is still not resolved, verify that the following registry values are present and correct: HKLM\SOFTWARE\Classes\Interface\{00020400-0000-0000-C000-000000000046} Name: (Default) Value: IDispatch HKLM\SOFTWARE\Classes\Interface\{00020400-0000-0000-C000-000000000046}\ProxyStubClsid Name: (Default) Value: {00020420-0000-0000-C000-000000000046} HKLM\SOFTWARE\Classes\Interface\{00020400-0000-0000-C000-000000000046}\ProxyStubClsid32 Name: (Default) Value: {00020420-0000-0000-C000-000000000046} If the problem is still not resolved, reinstall Internet Explorer. If you are using the version of Internet Explorer that is included with your operating system, reinstall or repair your operating system.
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/281679 Try that |
I'd feel less guilty about missing the cup. We didn't realise the time during rehearsal as we were rushing around getting ready for a gig and missed The Minute. I feel horrible.
Hehe, Jack, Jase and Jade. That's awesome man. Sounds like a good lil tackler. Let's hope he's not like that when he hits the teens :p. |

Haha $1100 off isn't too bad :)
<3 Billy Hydes. Camped out for their insane sale - awesome times right there. I was going for a $40 PRS but someone got in line before me for it. Nice bloke though so I'll let him have it. No idea if I'll ever use this speaker but at least there's the option to sell it for a bit of a profit. My dad got a $20 trumpet and my keys player got a $10 keyboard so we're pretty happy all up. Neutrik Speakon NL-4 and 1/4" phone jack. Only thing I can think of is when you rip in wmp you can set it to rip to mp3 in Options... that's a long way round but hey. Other than that I don't know. |

Other than that I don't know.
WTF??? You there???? Were you at Blackburn???? If so, I was the dude that turned up on Friday night, after travelling down to Melbourne and busking up $80 for the bass amp, but ended up settling for a pair of bongos (which my drummer ended up buying off me, even though I was probably going to give them to him anyway). |
Heck yeah I was there. Oh man are you serious? No way were you going to get Nick's combo haha. My dad was the guy with "The List" down at the classical store - he says he remembers you. Depending on what time you got there, I was sitting down with my mate and dad down there holding Alicia's spot (at the front of the line down there) while she was holding mine up there with Nick and the rest of them.
Far out man. No way! |
Yeah, your dad was the coolest guy there.
Me and another dude set up some pizza boxes in the middle of the road, and put an empty beer can on top of it. A car collested them, and the can got wedged under the wheel. The two guys in the car got out and walked towards us (we thought they were going to kill us) and asked where the guys that did it went, to which I quickly replied: "Yeah man, they ran off around the corner." Afterwards, your dad came up and we were expecting a lecture (I knew he was a school teacher). He ended up showing us some wire cutters and telling us how he was going to be up to mischeif... Your dad is a god. I still intend to share a slab with him. I actually remember introducing myself to you, except it never clicked that you were THE Trea. I was wearing a leather jacket and had a guitar on my back. |
Oh so you are the guys we were calling idiots for the pizza boxes then lol. We were a bit o.O'd about the fact that it was an L'plater that picked it up that's all, coz there's no telling how much experience he'd had driving.
Sneak me a few will ya? :p. OH wait, I think... yeah, haha I remember thinking "I've seen that face before" but then being too tired to be stuffed thinking about it. You were there with another bloke weren't you? Maybe if I hadn't been half asleep I would've realised. Haha go my bed (or street as it was) hair. That's scary you had to see me like that :p. |
Yeah, that a Sash. I met him at Flemington Billy Hydes. I went there first, and there was nothing left, so we teamed up and went to Blackburn.
Hey, the pizza boxes weren't my idea. All I did was buy the pizza that was in them... and the beer that was in the can. And I put the can on top of them. But other than that it wasn't my idea. Did your dad end up doing anything to those ladie's chairs??? |
Hey don't worry man, it's all good. I guess we were just worried for the guy particularly seeing he was only on his L's.
Haha I don't know. So you heard that whole story then? Man I hate those two ladies. They lied straightout to my dad after he had spent hours trying to talk to them nicely, helping her out even, and making sure everything was going to be as fair as possible. They were using emotional blackmail both to us and to the staff, and this is after coming across as a very strong christian. Contradiction and a half lol. We managed to keep them out of the doorway the whole night but somehow they managed to push their way in about half an hour before, when some of them were off at McCafe and then of course we couldn't exactly feel correct in pushing them out of the way or fighting them for it lol. So yeah we tried talking them out of it but it was pretty much pointless, and Mike (if you met him) started gently pushing against her to get her to move, at which point she started fake crying and stuff . When the doors opened, Mike ran off in the other direction to me to go grab his Line 6 but it wasn't there. He was told it had already been taken even though he was the first one in the bass area. We think the ladies (who had been in all the stores talking to the staff across the Friday after all this blew up on thursday night) had asked to have it taken up to the table for them because they wouldn't be able to carry it in the rush or something. Anyway they ended up buying his line 6. So he was basically prettty angry and as us 2+ night campers were standing around talking afterwards, we saw him heading over to the ladies' car with some brake fluid. That's when we left. |
Yeah, I met those ladies. When i first got there they seemed to be under the impression that I was a satanist or somthing. When I smiled and said 'hi' to one of them she pretended to not have heard me.
So yeah, my first impression of them was not a good one, so I decided not to really talk to them. That's pretty sh!tty of them, especcially after Mike had lined up all that time. Particularly if they were buying it to send to a dude might not have even wanted it (it's a Line 6, after all). Middle aged ladies with too much free time @ a sale = trouble. Down at the drums end, we all ended up talking about physics, followed by religion, followed by philosophy. We came up with 2 new big bang theories and established that because all our atoms in our bodys were around at the time of the big bang, we were all brothers and sisters and we shouldn't hurt eachother (staying awake in front of a music store all night will do that). One of the dudes was wearing a No-Idea t-shirt (they're from Ballarat), which was pretty cool. I was tempted to see what happened down at the guitar end, but I had to get to band practice (which we ended up having in our bassist's driveway, but that's another story). By the way, keep those JBLs. JBLs are pretty much the minimum you need for a reasonably large gig. They're great for parties too. Loud enough to disturb the neighborhood, but no so loud that they'll blow people over the back fence. You'll find in a few years, if you have speakers like that just 'lying around' people will love you... particularly me. |
