I've overplayed Back In The USSR, so I usually skip it.

Walrus Gumboot 05-01-2005 07:14 PM

However, it is known that you can overplay Ob-La Di- Ob-La-Da

NEVER!

Desmond has a barrow in the marketplace...

Woodstock 05-01-2005 07:22 PM

I never overplay Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da.

Walrus Gumboot 05-01-2005 07:26 PM

Perhaps if your little sister ran around the house singing it fo a few months

Although it was worse when she ran around singing "My Heart Will Go On" in 1998 or so

TheDMV 05-01-2005 07:44 PM

I find a lot of those songs on that album I tend to get tired of/ over play. One that is always good, at least for me would be The Continuing Story of Bungalo Bill. I think the fact that the lyrics tell a story keeps me interested. Same with Happiness is a warm Gun. Strange, quirky lyrics; the song actually kind of scares me. I still listen to it late at night though.

I just added Sgt. Pepper and Abbey Road to my small but steadily increasing collection. Both excellent cd's...Im really loving "Getting Better" of Sgt. Pepper...and Im starting to realized Paul is one of the best screamers ever.

Like on "Oh Darling"? Good vocals there.

Those are the only two Beatles cds I own. But they're my two favorite, so it's ok.

PinkFreud 05-01-2005 08:32 PM

golden slumbers is a good example as well. good power.

Leper 05-01-2005 08:43 PM

I've got to get the white album, i've heard too many good things about it not to buy it now.

I thinks its probably their best.

And to the poster a few posts up, Bungalow Bill is an awesome song, catchy as hell, can't help singing along. Can't get tired of it.

Glitterati 05-01-2005 11:32 PM
Paul invented the heavy metal scream. Death and Black metal are just glorified cases of Macca faboyism.
So true

Oh! Darling has some of the best Paul screaming ever.

Golden Slumbers is a great song in that the say the lyrics are sung are so strong, powerful and emotional. It is a great extension of the piano and has to be one of my favourite Beatles tracks.

Sgt._Joker 05-02-2005 03:13 AM

Paul must of f*cked his vocals over royaly after singing "Oh Darling".

I realy like Dear Prudence and Looking Through a Glass Onion.

every time i hear I am the Walrus i get amazed by the lyrics no song has out done that for me yet, though A day in the Life and Gimme some Truth have come close.

Ulysses 05-02-2005 03:37 AM

I really like the lyrical aspect of Sgt. Peppers and the language used. The psychedelic, trippy feeling of Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds, the beautifully constructed music and lyrics to She's Leaving Home and the subject matter and the way it is expressed through language in A Day in the Life. Also Across The Universe off Let It Be is one of my favourite Beatles tracks lyrically speaking.

clown_phobia 05-02-2005 03:42 AM

The thing about Oh Darling! is that paul sung it only once a day, and if he screwed it up (in the recording studio) - he'd try again the next day. he wanted that raw sound.

He'd practise it in the bath!

Ulysses 05-02-2005 03:46 AM

That explains the excellent vocals and smooth dynamics. It really adds something extra to the track, with less intense and worked vocals a lot of the Beatles music in particular their later material wouldn't satisfy emotionally but his voice gives songs such as Oh Darling! a great edge.

Someone mentioned the 'bigger than Jesus' controversy. During an interview, Lennon was talking about how mind boggling the Beatles success was. How the fans hung on every word they said, every action they did. The copying of the clothes they wore and how the fashion would change every time they changed their socks. The gist of Lennon's quote was that in 'eyes' of these type of fans, they were bigger than Jesus. It was cynical Lennon humor lamenting that in these modern times, kids were looking up to them more than Jesus.

The press took the quote out of context centering solely on the 'we're bigger than Jesus', and and not printing the whole discussion. If the whole story had been reported properly, it may have clearer that Lennon still couldn't believe the fanaticism the band commanded and that fanaticism was beginning to boarder on being obscene. I read the whole interview years ago and my conclusion was that Lennon, in his own tongue-in-cheek way, was telling certain over the top fans that perhaps they should get a life.

This sort of thing still goes on today. How many times have you guys read in a newspaper or saw a tv report where somebody important got fired or triggered a protest because they used the wrong word or phrase during a speech. Most times the phrase just came out wrong, and you know they really didn't mean exactly that, but people can be so touchy and unforgiving.....

xGirl_Germs 05-02-2005 07:25 PM

the beatles rule

pigonthewing82 05-02-2005 07:27 PM

Yeah, I always thought that whole thing was very stupid. I see it as more of a way for people who hated the Bealtes because of their political stance to attack them about somthing.

Walrus Gumboot 05-02-2005 07:29 PM

I hate it when they take sound clips off of poloticians and stuff and use them against them without putting them in context. It's all about the context.

I wopuld be really bored with Oh Darling! if it weren't for the screaming. Any song where the Beatles scream is good enough for me.

lunch998 05-02-2005 07:35 PM

I don't mind the context in this case. The Beatles>Jesus to me.

Oh of course besides no wars have been fought in the Beatles name (the Manson thing dones't count).

give it 300-900 years or so

Distant Echoes 05-02-2005 07:46 PM

and watch out for that McCartny vs. Jackson case over the rights to the beatles songs. both sides have some crazy fans.

bcf717 05-02-2005 08:01 PM

Yes WALRUS, I do own a Hofner. It's a model 500/1, or the violin bass as it's commonly known. It was built in 1967 and I bought it in 1971 to take to college. (Can't remember if I payed $100 for the bass and $150 for the stack amp or visa-versa...)

I was a drummer for a band in high school. We basically learned music by listening to Beatles records as well as the great rock and roll classics that influenced the Beatles....like Little Richard, Carl Perkins etc, etc. Arriving at college I quickly found that, A; drum kits don't fit too well in the dorm, and B; drums don't have volume controls. So I switched to the bass.

I've played a few other bass models but always drift back to the Hofner. I find it quick and versatile... and gives a good boom with proper amplification. I play standard 6 string rhythm as well. I have a nice Ibanez thick body hollow arch to which I added a Bigsby. It gives a good acoustic blend and has the sound and look of a Gretsch, if you can picture it.
I also have a Rickenbacker 320 from 1988. The 320 has the same specs as the 325, the model that Lennon used. It's short scale with a thinner body like the 1963 version that was given to Lennon in Miami. The 320's were made during the 80's using same spec as the discontinued 325's. Rickenbacker recently re-issued the 325's (starting price was over two grand) but I'm happy with what I got. That's my 'hammering' guitar. :)

bcf717 05-02-2005 08:11 PM

PS... I hope Jackson loses the rights to those songs as quickly as he is losing his nose.....

pigonthewing82 05-02-2005 08:18 PM
PS... I hope Jackson loses the rights to those songs as quickly as he is losing his nose.....
He better, I swear if I hear another Beatles song in a commercial I will be the first to start a war in the Bealtes name against Jackson.

pigonthewing82 05-02-2005 08:26 PM
He's announced his intention to sell the rights, I hope Macca and Ringo get at least a piece of them.
Thank god, honestly I never really cared about the whole child molesting thing, its not my bussniess, but he should have been put in jail for selling out the Beatles songs.

I'd drink to that.
