But few are good in every way like Images and Awake.
True!

So, my friend let me borrow the Live at Budokan DVD and the Live in Tokyo/5 Years in a Livetime DVD. My respect for the band has grown even more. It's amazing how much fun they seem to have playing all the songs in concert. I loved the part where Portnoy brought people from the crowd do drum with him, that was so awesome. And I must say, they're music videos are really cheesy. :p So, discuss the dvds if you want.

Darkness 09-01-2005 09:02 PM

Awake is rocking my socks lately. :p

ter2333 09-01-2005 09:05 PM

Yeah they're DVD's could be better. The special effects on "Live Scenes from New York" look like one step above power point. Also some of the camera work on that DVD looks like it came from a camcorder. Overall it was done pretty well though, and you have to give credit because that entire DVD was directed by Mike Portnoy.

Elmo McCheese 09-01-2005 09:09 PM

Does anybody remember when Live Scenes from NY first came out right before September 11 and it included a picture of the World Trade Center on fire? I'm pretty sure they recalled it, but my guitar teacher has the original with the picture.

The quality of the Budokan dvd is great though, imo. And the Livetime one is also good (although it varies). The live in Tokyo one also looks pretty camcorder-ish.

I just got into Dream Theater maybe a month and a half ago, and I am in total love with their music. I heard about them because I am a huge Tool fan, and most places I read about Tool, I saw things posted about Dream Theater.

First CD I got was actually the Live at Budokan CD set that I saw at a WalMart late one night. I was with some friends, and was actually quite shocked to see something by them at a WalMart. So I bought it and give it a few listens, and fell in love. The third CD out of that set is my favorite from it.

I later purchased Scenes from a Memory and Octavarium. Scenes hasn't left my computers CD drive since then, been about 3 weeks now. I listen to it clear through, I just love how it all flows together as one big story. Very cool. I haven't really grown to like Octavarium too much, just nothing from it that strongly catches my attention.

So my current favorite is Scenes, though I am wanting to get Images and Words, and Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence. I am sure I'll like both of them. Also, as for DVD's, I also got the DVD set for Live at Budokan a week or two ago, and it really made me be in greater awe of them. JP does some pretty nutty fast alternate pickings, heh. Its just so awesome to actually see it instead of just hearing it. MP seems to be great at putting on a show while he's playing, with stick spins and flips and everything else, definitely a great performer and drummer.

Too bad I didn't really get into them in time to see them on Gigantour while it was in Ohio :-/ Maybe they'll do a tour with Tool once they release thier new CD (doubt a tour with both of them would happen though :-/ ).

WheepingGuitar39 09-01-2005 09:14 PM

I'm gonna see Dream Theatre tommorow night.
And I'm gonna turn 18 while they are playing.

Sweet.

Glad to see a pretty new DT fan. If they went on tour with Tool, I would just be in total awe. I doubt it would happen, but anything's possible.

Darkness 09-01-2005 09:20 PM

Funny that was brought up, I just read in a 2002 interview with John Myung:

"Are there bands out there that you currently admire?"

"I really like TOOL, I think they are a great band."

Yea, it would make for a great show. I could just imagine it, a 2 hour set by each of them, maybe even a 3 hour set by DT, heh. I would definitely need to bring a couple extra pairs of pants to the show if they played together, if ya know what I mean :)

YouGottaBeCrazy 09-01-2005 09:36 PM

It would certainly be an interesting show. They are almost completely different in style in everyway. Maybe the juxtaposition of the 2 band's sounds would create complete awesomeness. I'd rather see that than see Tool tour with Meshuggah again. I have no problem with Meshuggah, I think they are excellent musicians and not every band can name a song "New Millenium Cyanide Christ", but I guess they just aren't my cup of tea. I wouldn't mind hearing a song occasionally, but I didn't really think that they fit as an opening act for Tool. Anyone agree with me?

Yea, Meshuggah's kinda more like Tool's big brother...more complex.

Tool and DT would be awesome...

It's not really just that. Tool shouldn't have an opening act that is more agressive and heavier than them. I think Tool are better song writers, but they are really so different in style of music that I just thought it didn't fit at all. DT are also technically superior to Tool (although I happen to think Carey is better than Portnoy, both are great though imo), and I don't think they'd fit well with Tool either. I'm not really sure if I'm explaining myself well. It's just...I dont't think an opening band should outdo the main act in terms of playing. Plus, I think Meshuggah deserves to headline their own tour and I know Dream Theater does (they will after the Gigantour, I think). I can't really think of a band that would fit just right with being an opening act for Tool, so I think I'd just be happy with no opening act and a 3 hour Tool concert. :thumb: Of course, DT would be awesome.

thunderzstruck 09-01-2005 10:31 PM

Dream Theater and Rush! :amaze:

I can dream, right?

Darkness 09-01-2005 10:37 PM

Opeth would fit best with Tool, me thinks.

YouGottaBeCrazy 09-01-2005 11:05 PM
Dream Theater and Rush! :amaze:

That'd be cool, but...who would open the show? Tool or Rush? I wouldn't mind hearing the sweet synth lead of "Subdivisions" and than later the sweet guitar riffs of "Parabola" in the same night.

EDIT: sorry, thought it said Rush and Tool. My bad.

Darkness 09-01-2005 11:10 PM

I think Dream Theater would open for Rush or Tool. Rush and Tool have more mainstream sucess I think, and I don't think 2 mainstream (to an extent) bands would open for a more underground band.

I was referring to just a Tool/Rush concert because I read the post wrong. I though it said Rush and Tool. I'm giving myself really interesting ideas. If those 3 had one 6 or 7 hour long concert, that might just be the greatest thing ever.

Darkness 09-01-2005 11:13 PM

Oh sorry, I misunderstood.

Thats a kickass song BTW...

Tool would probably open for Rush?... well thats a hard one.

Nah, it was my bad. I'm terrible at reading, plus it's like 1 AM in New York.

Darkness 09-01-2005 11:26 PM

Well any combination of 2 of those 3 bands would be incredible, lets just leave it at that.

thunderzstruck 09-01-2005 11:30 PM

MHM!

In terms of popularity it SEEMS here

Rush > DT > Tool

Here as in MX? On these forums, it's Tool > DT > Rush. In general, it seems to be Rush > Tool > DT. Although I feel that all 3 of those bands never get enough radio attention. DT gets none as far as I can hear.

I wouldn't say that, Schism and Sober are more popular then the BAND Dream Theater.

Yeah, the radio and Dream Theater just don't seem to be much of friends. I would probably piss myself if I was listening to KROQ and in between a Metallica song and a Disturbed song, they played "The Dance of Eternity." You don't hear many Ragtime piano leads on the radio these days.

thunderzstruck 09-01-2005 11:37 PM

Yeah ok this is what it is in the world right now

Rush > Tool > DT

Or 6 Degrees of Inner Turbulance.

All 40 something minutes? They might have to cut it down just a bit. haha.

Rush > Opeth > DT > Tool

Images and Words and Awake still make DT better than Tool, no matter what crap they've done since.
