1. If you run tons of programs with it, yes it can. But normally running it with a web browser, insant messaging service, media player, and maybe one more program will not kill your computer. Unless you have like 64 RAM

2. Everything you use you have the possbility to get viruses. With soulseek certain extensions are blocked, especially ones that can carry viruses. But the only way to really prevent viruses is your own common sense.

3. There is a search function that you can use. Your search terms will match anywhere in band, album, or track title of the files.

Ahahahah man...it kills mine. I need to buy RAM so badly.

How much s'hit are you running? I have 256 RAM run soulseek, firefox, AIM, Winamp, 2 insantances of RoboMX (chat thing for winmx), Roboserv (hosting thing for winmx), and gmail notifier and I don't get slowed down. Unless I run MP3 Tag and have it tagging a bunch of stuff.

Let's Chop Cats! 03-28-2005 09:58 PM

256 ram is weak.

512 minimum, 1 gig if you game.

I have 384 ram. 128+256.

CombatRock 03-28-2005 09:59 PM

and if i dont like it is it unistallible (while im asking all these little questions is i dont want to mess my computer up again,i dont want to buy a new one)

also is the website.. www.soulseek.com?

I usually run AIM, Soulseek, Firefox, and Musicmatch. Running 3 out of those 4 isn't too bad, but all 4 can get hellacious. (FYI: I think I made that word up?)

I have no idea how much RAM I have. But I know it sucks, and my mom is the one who bought the computer and she has no idea about computers so I'm sure she just bought the cheapest one.

And yes, it does have an uninstaller, all programs do.

I've been meaning to get some more. At least a Gig. My dad only has 128, but he barley runs anything.

You probably have about 128 then.

IFlogMyMolly16 03-28-2005 10:06 PM

Do you have any idea how much RAM costs and how much I should get? I have nooooooooo idea.

CombatRock 03-28-2005 10:08 PM

thanks brainsqurimn...and when did you make that forum site that your profile says..i just set up an account there
Do you have any idea how much RAM costs and how much I should get? I have nooooooooo idea.
It's not too expensive, I think it's one of the cheaper computer addons.

At least get another 256 stick and you'll be good for awhile. RAM is one of the easier things to install. Just open up the computer, pop in the stick, and voila. There may be some hardware installaion, but that's just a bunch of clicking.

I bought the fancier hosting and domain name last month. I've had the actual forums (on a different server and forum) for about 6 months.

CombatRock 03-28-2005 10:15 PM

good job...hey i downloaded soulseek and everything..and downloaded and hand ful of dead kennedy songs..but when i got to transfer they all say remotely queued..what does that mean..and also when the song is finished downloading were does it go and were do i go to listen to it?

IFlogMyMolly16 03-28-2005 10:15 PM

I'm gonna have to hit up Best Buy tomorrow then. And I need to return some mini iPod crap my dad got me that seems pretty pointless. Like...a remote. WTF would I need that for? The iPod is small enough to be a remote anyway. And a dock. I don't get its purpose.

Remotely Queued
Queue = a line
Remote = other side
So it means you are in the other person's line waiting for that file.

In file sharing, the folder you picked to save to, is where the music will go. You can play the music with the media player of your choice (winamp, itunes, musicmatch)

That's a good idea, just look around. Maybe ask the people that work there. I just looked up some ram on outpost, Fry's online site. It was $35 for a 256 stick. I'm probably going to buy that next time I'm at Fry's

EDIT: Post 5800!

POINTLESS5448 03-28-2005 10:18 PM

was the remote smaller than the ipod?

ok...so.. will eventlly those remote queued things donwload..and to play the music i have to download somthing else?

IFlogMyMolly16 03-28-2005 10:24 PM

You probably have a player on your computer

RealPlayer
Windows Media
Musicamatch

Something...

And yeah, you'll get those songs some time.

Brain Toad 03-28-2005 10:25 PM
ok...so.. will eventlly those remote queued things donwload..and to play the music i have to download somthing else?
Yeah once you move up in the queue, they will start. If you right click the file and click "Get place in line" it will show what place in line you are. When you are searching, look for files that are black and bolded, those have no queue. Grey ones have a queue. Red ones are users that signed off since you did the search.

I'm guessing you've only used P2Ps like Kazaa and Ares which have a built in media player. So, yes you should download something else. Although if you just double click the files when you find them in the folder they save to, your computer will open them in Windows Media Player, or whatever media player is your computers default. I however recommend downloading winamp from http://www.winamp.com to play music, it is the greatest one out there

IFlogMyMolly16 03-28-2005 10:25 PM
was the remote smaller than the ipod?
Yep. But still, stupid.

Brain Toad 03-28-2005 10:27 PM

I think Musicmatch uses a lot of RAM, a lot of players with big interfaces like that, use lots of RAM. That may be your slowing down problem, Shannon.

CombatRock 03-28-2005 10:27 PM

k i got music match and windows both so i will use one of those...thanks for the help..
though i will probley have more questions comming lol

edit: yes already another question..i found my place in line and it was around 660..does that mean 660 people are downloading that song? if so how long will that take?

I'm willing to answer. I like answering people's computer questions when I'm bored.

That means there is 660 people in front of you in the line, so it may take awhile to start. It's DK, so try searching again for a lower queue, or no queue. Also if you give me your username on there I can add you and you can browse my files.

Really...so what would be a better player?

Brain Toad 03-28-2005 10:31 PM
Really...so what would be a better player?
Winamp doesn't use much ram, unless you are running the media library, which isn't necessary. Or if you are using the modern skin.

IFlogMyMolly16 03-28-2005 10:35 PM

I don't understand why Musicmatch is so much though. I don't even know what an interface is. :(

Brain Toad 03-28-2005 10:37 PM
I don't understand why Musicmatch is so much though. I don't even know what an interface is. :(
Interface = place where you push buttons.

Whenever I've used Musicmatch it had a big window. And had a lot of fancy doodads that take up RAM.

IFlogMyMolly16 03-28-2005 10:39 PM

Musicmatch is pretty tiny actually. And I always thought it was pretty simple. Like, there's no stupid webpage thing like on Windows Media. Hmm

I dont know, I just didn't use it much. I'm a Winamp loyalist, so everything is inferior compared to it, which isn't stretching the truth much.

If you add my name to your list you can browse me and take my files.

Username is NICKJOE

To add a user to your userlist, right click the thing on the right that has the headers user, and click "Add to list" and type my name in there, case sensative.

guys, windows media player is where its at!

IFlogMyMolly16 03-28-2005 10:50 PM

I hate Windows Media!!

Brain Toad 03-28-2005 10:51 PM

I don't like any program made by micros'hit, bad enough i have to use their OS. I have never seen any advantage to running Windoze Media Player, it just sucks.

IFlogMyMolly16 03-28-2005 10:53 PM

Guess what. I cleaned the coffee pots at work wrong and if they didn't notice, I could've killed the next person who drank from them. Because I didn't brew them twice to get all the chlorine tabs out. I'm hilarious.
