Faaantastic.
a while back people were trying to deny the fact that the actual CD existed, and that i had it. After i stopped caring, they demanded i upload it to them. after a good "" i told em to fuk off /out to lunch |
The CD is 5 days away, and I got to flirt with a cute Sam Goody's employee to get extra stuff...so, I am proud of myself..
As far as the whole "not having respect for the musicians" shin-dig, I'll give an example.. In high school I was a talented art student. Yet, I never received recognition from the teacher academically (maybe for my stubbornness to comform to her paste and cut projects), but would constantly praise me in class. One day while going to my locker (in the classroom) I noticed my art work was gone. I freaked out! "Who the hell took my work!?" I kept asking students. Later on the in class I found out that my teacher was parading it around to different classes as an example. What could I do about it..? What is done, is done. Though, as the days went on students (of the higher level classes that the work was shown to) would come up to me in a sort of snare. It turns out that the teacher chose certain pieces to show (and not the art as a whole), and completely threw off others reaction, and perception, of my work for amature-ish. She was more focus of a certain shading of a piece, rather than the whole piece.. So, bottom line..? It not about whether or not, "Tool is still getting their money, because I'm going to buy one anyways", it's about how the artist wants the work presented. The music, the packaging, the artwork, the experience of having the album straight from a record store is all in one for Tool. If you are just DL-ing the album, then it's no different than my teacher only showing the students half my work...and that's is where the disrespect comes from.. Did that clear things up a bit..? |

You mean like you don't have respect for anyone elses opinion on this that dosn't follow yours? Yeah... ok.
So, bottom line..? Did that clear things up a bit..?
I'm going to listen to the CD for the first time with the booklet and look at the CD cover and everything just like you are. Tons of people won't even really care much about the art. Many people think the art we've seen sucks. You don't have to like cover art and booklets to respect a band and enjoy their music. Tool make the music, but it's always up to the fans how they experience it. No matter what band you're talking about. The way people who d/led the leak experienced the music, and will experience it when the album comes out is not inherantly more disrespectful or worse than people who just buy it. My point is this: Tool have stated that they don't want people focusing on the lyrics when they listen to their music. And even out of the people who buy the album on the day there will be a very high percentage of people who do this, and even go online soon after buying and find the lyrics to learn the songs. Tool haver stated they'd rather people focus on the music as a whole, but you're not ****ing disrespecting the band by wanting to learn the lyrics and even focusing on them at first, even if Tool have stated they'd prefer otherwise. Fact is, Tool don't HAVE a say in how you listen to your music. That's like movie directors saying they want people to pay attention to every last bit of a movie, no toilet breaks for you. Some of you people take things a bit too far. I do respect peoples wishes to wait for the album if that will improve your experience, but people have to understand that this isn't the case for everyone, and should respect that. I personally am still excited about the album release. I can't wait to have that CD in my hands. Tool top 10: Opiate Prison Sex Sober H. 46&2 Third Eye The Grudge Parabol/a Vicarious The Pot I tried to get a song from each release. To be honest though, I could probably throw Opiate out and put a song from any of their 3 latest albums in it's place. That would be one amazing setlist though for a live show. It's sorely missing Schism, Stinkfist, Eulogy, 10,000 Days, and even Lateralus and Ænima though for me. |
thats a decent interpretation esoteric. What i would say is that it doesnt matter what the band INTENDS for you to get from the experience, you will inherently fill the blanks for yourself
As far as using your art work as a "teaching tool", i would be extremely offended in your situation as well, but it would be in my nature to try to justify it by other means as opposed to lashing out at the teacher |
I see from where you're coming from, Che..
And yeah, I wanted to kill the teacher. She was a total b i t c h to me the rest of the time except whenever she wanted to "use" my art. Did you know I lost 2 sketchbooks because of that woman..? She would take the books to grade, and I never saw mine again. But...that was like 4 years ago whenever I was in highschool, so I can't do s h i t about it now.. I can say though, that she made it hard for me to enter into any kind of contest for academics. She was a total c o c kblock in that sense.. I just know what it feels like to not have your work presented the way you want it to, and it sucks monkey balls. So, in turn, I'm waiting for the official release. It may not be others' cup of tea, but once that has happened to you you grow a sort of understanding.. i can respect that, hence the reason i respect you. You are able to see both sides and choose the one you see fit :thumb:
Ive had similiar experiences with an art teacher in middle school. She wanted me to compile my works for a display, but i wasnt for that at all. Not because i didnt feel it was good enough, but because i didnt want the attension/recognition for it. When she asked, i just stated that i didnt do any work outside of her class, which was basically the truth. When she had me sign up for her "art club" i quit in a short time after that. It was basically her just TELLING us what to do, which is not the way I perseived art |

To be honest i think when most bands put out an album they have some idea of how they want it to be absorbed. For example That patton project by love called 'music to make love to'. So much for subtlety, but that's what was in his mind when he wrote the stuff. However it's not an ideal situation, many people have different ways of listening to some albums. For me there are albums i like to play while i'm working, driving, or even sleeping/resting. I doubt dream theater put out 'metropolis pt 2 : SFAM' for me to go to sleep to, but i love enjoying the album when taking an afternoon nap, i wake up during different parts and stuff. I like the anology involving the movie and the toilet breaks, though i think it's more fitting if you look at it as a movie you will go to see on your own,. or one with a lady friend. Obviously the movie you go to see on your own you will want to absorb it and give your attention (I'mma go see the da vinci code on my own probably) but if you're with a lady you oculd be somewhat distracted but still enjoy the movie. To me the only thing i really want to do with the album is listen to it. It didn't really work laying in the dark with headphones on, it was just too heavy (in the sense there was so much to take in). But i've sure enjoyed having the song played in my car with friends talking, then i'll point out bits of the music i love and stuff. Even if i had the CD i don't think i'd have looked at the artwork more than once, i'm not really an artwork type of guy. I probably wouldn't even touch the CD too much after it's ripped to my computer. Y'know with my music i like ot enjoy what comes through the speakers, i'm not big on everything else.. Can anyone here send me Tool's cover of No Quarter? I was going to ask in the R&M music request thread but figured I'd get better responses here anyways.

Schism is great, although it might be one of those tracks I outgrow when I get more into the band.
|
I'm into them... and it's still my favourite.
:smoke: 1st Tool song I heard. |
I actually didn't like it right when it came out... I like it now because it just has it's own identity and a great structure to it. Just such a great buildup from beginning to end.
|
I didn't really like when it was getting all the radio play either, but now I really enjoy it. All of the last two minutes are fantastic.

Never heard Tool on the radio...

Man, you really need to think before you post. You contradict yourself and the "respect" logic your trying to throw around makes no sense at all. I am a musician. I am paid to play shows, and I am getting ready to hit the studio to record a album I have worked on for years. We have people who come to our shows and record our new music to share with other fans of my band. Do I care? No, not at all. I like the fact that people enjoy what we create so much that they are excited about it, want to share it with others, and want to enjoy it privately whenever they want to. I agree with AJIG. People who download the WHOLE cd and don't buy it when it comes out are wrong. If someone downloads one or 2 songs to see if they like it, decide they don't like it, then choose to not buy it; I have no problem with that. As far as supporting Tool, myself, along with other fans, support them. I buy their CD's, their individual video DVD releases, and their licensed T-shirts. I have actually bought TWO copies of every CD they have released to listen to one, and save the other as a collectors item. And yes, I do have an unopened copy of Salival, I don't make it public knowledge much tho. When I bought my current drum set up, I compared all of the kits I was interested in, and when it was all said and done, it came down between DW and Sonor. I went with the Sonor, even tho they were a couple of a hundred dollars more expensive, than the DW's because SONOR sponsors Danny Carey. I try to support EVERY company I can that sponsors artists who create music I am inspired by and enjoy to listen to. I am all about supporting artists, don't make such cut and dry arguements about music downloading like that is the ONLY way for a group to make money. There are a TON of ways for a band to make money, CD sales is just a portion of it. You should really research the music industry some. Read up on TAXI, ASCAP and other aspects of the industry. I think once you are more informed you will see that taking such a HARDLINE and calling people names is not the best course of action when dealing with these situations. |
i still like the song...
buts its definitely not a track i will always play. Theres always those tracks that stand out to me right away, but they seem to eventually take a back seat to other "sleeper" songs. Its not that i like them any less, its just other tracks become more inspirational i guess damn sonor, you need to stop making coherent posts like that. Makes everyone else look bad  |
