Yeah, that's true. You listen to him playing live and he sounds incredibly sloppy and doesn't play half as fast as guys like Vai or Petrucci, but he has a good vibe and he wore tie-dye bandanas - that's good enough for me.
Do any of you believe that he was the best Rock (Or any genre) guitarist of his time? |
Do any of you believe that he was the best Rock (Or any genre) guitarist of his time?
No...but I do think Jeff Beck > anyone. |
Well at that time Jeff hadn't had enough skill to even compare to himself now. So it is strongly debatable that Jeff was even as good as Hendrix.
|
I just got The Who Live at Leeds today, thats an awsome cd.
|
I got Nashville Skyline and The Notorious Byrd Brothers today.

One of the arguments I've seen people use against Hendrix, is that he isn't nearly as fast as any of the top guitarists in the world. Truth is, I've seen a few DVD's of him playing live, where he is playing a lot faster than anyone else I have ever seen play the blues. Blues solos are generally slower than shred solos, so he may not seem that fast...but I'm pretty sure if he actually wanted to, he could practice up and shred with the best of them. Maybe not as fast as some of the guitarists around today, but pretty close. He can play pretty **** fast when he wants to (faster than I've seen SRV play the blues, or any other blues/blues rock artist)
So basically, what I'm saying..is that not only was Hendrix a great songwriter, creative and innovative guitarist, he also had amazing speed which is something most people oversee when just listening to his studio albums. |
Emotion > speed
|
Emotion > speed
I'm not sure if that's directed towards me, but I hope my previous post didn't make it appear that I only liked Hendrix because I think he's fast. |
No I didn't mean to imply that, I am just saying that in regard to the people that always talk about speed, that I think emotion is 1000x more important then how fast you play.
|
Well after doing 2 pages it stands as this this...
1. Tie: Eric Clapton and Jimi Hendrix 2. David Gilmour 3. Steve Vai |

Absolutely, the essence of classic rock is its classy solo's, generally great lyric writing and musicianship that doesn't need speed. The emotion they convey musically and lyrically and with performance on the stage blows shredding right out the door. Emotionally and spiritually I get so much more from the likes of Jethro Tull, Led Zeppelin and The Doors than i do from listening to a shredder. Led before shred  |
Mountain brings back good memories of when I was in Gr. 6. I loved Mississippi Queen so badly. Now there doing a tour with April Wine and Deep Purple. I've seen 2 of those bands so I'm probably not going but I recommend you go if you are thinking about it.
Edit- Oh yeah Magicbus, That Eleventh House is really really good. Why is Malcom banned? |
Heh heh, made a thread in the pit called "Last One to Post in this thread will get banned!" to mock Joshmays "First to Post in this thread will get banned!" thread.
My first banning ever. I just hope it's not permanent. :( Edit: Does anyone know how I can tell how long it is? |

Thanks Bartender :)
I looked in the site forum though, and it's not there...?? Back on topic, I'm listening to Bell Bottom Blues. I like this song a lot. |

Schyma in the guitarist thread someone voted for Ronnie VanZant...they meant Gary Rossington I'm guessing since VanZant is the lead singer...maybe you could edit it for him or w/e.

|

I think Petty's awesome too but i don't really consider him an exceptionally great guitarist. Maybe he is, and just doesn't try as hard as others. ;) |
Yeah, that vinyl is sweet. Forty Thousand Headmen and Dear Mr. Fantasy are masterpieces of early prog/psych rock. I like Medicated Goo as well :thumb: .
|
Edit- Oh yeah Magicbus, That Eleventh House is really really good.
Glad you like it :thumb: |
Yeah I was pretty mich voting for my favorites. I voted for Jack Johnson, Dylan, and probly some others who are not that great.
